When Mods Go Bad

Featured Replies

OK, so after the recent thread about whether an arb is a good thing or not, here’s a thread for that Cathartic relieve. Have you ever made a mod to your car that turned out to be a disaster?

I had my Clio 16V chipped many years ago and instead of making my car go faster, it made it pink like it was going out of fashion. First they (Superchips) made me remove my expensive bespoke SS exhaust as they said that was the culprit. So I bought a brand new Sebring system and put the Cat back on, it still pinked! So they resoldered a new chip in and it was slower than the previous one and still pinked!!! In the end I had an alleged copy of the original soldered back in and was let with a car that was noticeably slower than before I started and left me out of pocket as they wouldn’t refund my money. Still got the SS exhaust if anyone ever wants one for a 16V Clio.

I must have been very lucky with my cars as none of my mods has ever gone bad! Assuming you exclude the altercation with a ditch :o:rofl:

Having a tow bar fitted to my current car caused minor havoc with some of my personal settings in the cars HU

Ahh.. car mods, not moderators ;)

Thought that might get a Mod or two

I once did something exceptionally stupid with an Audi Coupe sunroof but I don't want to talk about it as it's embarrassing.

Nope - more stupid than that.

You know when you have an idea and don't realise how stupid an idea it is until after you start to carry it out?

Nope :D. More info required, use a real life example, like erm, a sunroof in an Audi :D

Oh alright then. Promise not to laugh at me too much?

Well... I had this old Audi Coupe, which had lived in a barn for three years, and my mate and I were nursing it back to life, learning many things as we went!!

It had a metal sunroof which wouldn't open - the handle snapped off when I tried to wind it. But it was all rusty at the corners and the seal was green and mouldy.

So I managed to get the sunroof out, but the mechanism was knackered and the drains all rusty and blocked. So my bright idea was to clean up the rust, fix it in place, then seal it shut. Then smooth over the roof with filler and paint it.

Really bad idea.

This was as good as it got...

It could have been worse. You might have wondered if it had an accidental spare cylinder and removed it. Although I guess it might not have had 5?

It definitely had 5 :D

I tweaked an Uno Turbo II and it sent the turbo gauge so far round the clock when the tuners were fettling it, it would never reset back past the half way point.

So what happened to the car in the end? Oh, and it wasn't that embarrassing :disappointed:

I ended up selling it when we made the decision to come out here - it was never even close to finished. It was running and passed its MOT. Not long before I sold it a lad on a motorbike crashed into the drivers door. He refused to give me his name or details and rode off!! It put a dent and scratch in the door.

I paid 300 for it and spend over a grand on bits. I ended up selling it for 250 quid to a bloke, who then apparently resold it to a guy in Glasgow!!

Thats more embarrassing IMHO.

Well it was never exactly an investment!!

Ever serviced your own car and only done the sump plug finger tight thinking you were going to come back and tighten it??

Then next day set off on a journey to Scotland from London...

I no longer have that car!

No so much a mod but still a right royal **** up!!

I was expecting something much worse... :D

I've no horrific car mod gone wrong story :( but I do have an old 5 pot Audi that I now have to to get rid of as I've no where to keep it. :(

i had a 106. I fitted a fetching aluminium and carbon fibre look handbrake cover. Later that day i was greeted by my car crashing into the house just outside my bedroom window. It smashed both rear clusters, ripped off the backbox, smashed the rear window and dented the tailgate. All because the handbrake button hadn't popped out properly with the new cover on.

I also have a clio one, i once had a 1.4 8v clio.. its was slow as ****! Being the plonker i am, i went and purchased a de-cat pipe from fleabay.

If i recall the standard exhaust was 2" diameter, the de-cat pipe was made of whatever he seemed to have around so was something like 3.5". So my exhaust went 2" to 3.5" back to 2" again. Dont know why, but it made the car so effin loud you couldn't talk to your passenger on the motorway. Complete waste of £35.00!

I may have also drilled the airbox! (oh the shame)

Hmmm, never really had a massive disaster with a mod...

Worst i've had is when fitting the rear arb to my Fabia on the standard jack, the car rolled backwards and seriously dented the cill as it wedged itself on the sloped jack... Ouch.
