Just think of the heat build up on his fingers.

OUCH.

I'll stick to the conventional method methinks!

You've surely got to be a bit wrong in the head to do this!!!

As has been said, no worse than working on a lathe!

Hmmm funny lathes around your area where they are so open they can lop off legs:confused:. Sorry but that is lots and lots worse than a lathe!!!!!!!!!

Never seen a webster bennett vertical boring machine?? 14 foot turntable slightly more dangerous than this, infact, just managed to avoid witnessing someone being decapitated by it poor soul. and yes we would touch the job by hand as it rotated with emery etc.

Lathes generally have a kill switch you can stamp on. I don't see any such measures for that car and I'm sure the torque of the engine would be pretty powerful too.

Perhaps not such a daft idea, but instead mount the wheel on some sort of electric motor with a killswitch?

Just for the benefit of folks wo dont follow the link this is the guys disclaimer,

Ok, ok. By popular demand, here is a serious disclaimer:

I have years of experience working on cars, trucks, other types of machinery, and generally doing manual labor that requires common sense. I was also raised to take responsibility for my own actions, and not pass the buck to other people. I understood when I polished these wheels that if I cut off all my fingers, it would've been my fault, and not, well, someone else's. I also put the car up on jackstands, tried to shake the car vigorously to make sure it was stable, then put it in 3rd gear, started it, and tried to shake it again. Then, and only then, did I lay underneath the car and polish the moving wheels with my tongue. If you don't have a background working in the field of common sense (unfortunately this is common these days, with our "let's think for everyone else, so they can't hurt themselves, and also can't learn from their experiences" society), you should not try this at home. Likewise, if you cut off all of your own fingers, you should not try to blame me or anyone else for that matter. GROW A SET, AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS!

Okay, there's my rant.

Nutter !

Lazy beggar should just take them off and do it properly. :D

christ just how expensive are lathes these days!! obviously more expensive than a old golf!! LOL

I actually don't see how that's dangerous. The wheel's doing about 300rpm which is fast enough to prevent you inserting your arm between the spokes but not so fast that it will smash every bone in your hand if you accidentally brush against them, the only projecting bit is the valve which is flexible and won't rip your arm off [edit: I suspect he's removed that anyway], and the only risk is burning your fingertips if you press the polishing cloth too hard - which is a self-limiting situation anyway.

It also appears to be a USA spec golf, so the polisher may be american, which explains alot to me.

I quite like his thinking tbh.

i think the resuts speak for themselves, his rims are shiney, result:thumbup:

I dont see a problem with it, in fact it has given me an idea for when i next polish mine

Its a lot less dangerous than when we used to balance truck wheels on what was little more than a stool with huge motor on it!

a freind of mine showd me this the other day its mad but great

I'm more impressed with his magic oil container, does it pour itself as well

so the polisher may be american

Nah he looks like a genuine Great British Hoodie

Unless it has a limited slip diff stopping that wheel wouldnt take much effort providing both wheels were off the ground, drive would just transfer to the other side.

I did a very similar thing a good few years ago on a Vauxhall Omega. The crankshaft pulley used to corrode onto the boss on the crank gear. I had the engine running with no bottom pulley on and thought it would be a good idea to hold a bit of emery cloth on the boss to clean it up while the engine was running. Finger got a bit to far in and ran around inbetween the crank gear and tensioner.

That smarted a touch I tell ya.

also good for polishing cam pulleys on any car, my husband used to do the same on the cosworth
