Tyres Pressure

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Please be gentle with - I never have done this before, but exactly what pressure do the tyres need to be.

Its my husbands car which I now drive (He s away in the army), and I have no idea at all.

It has the skoda alloys and the tyres look a bit low on air.

What are the correct numbers for the tyres please?

Thanks

Hi Laura, if you have a look inside of the fuel cap cover, there is a sticker with all the air pressures that the tyres need. Depending on what model you have it should give you the correct tyre pressures.

Failing that just post what model and engine you have, I'm sure that someone will give you the answer that you seek.

What does it say in the handbook?

Hi

I dont have the handbook I m afraid - The car is a 1.4 MPI- Thats all I know

And its got Skoda alloys.

Any ideas what I can do?

Thanks

Have you looked on the inside of your fuel cap yet?

Hi All,

Well a really nice guy in the petrol station (who was driving a Skoda Octavia) helped me out.

Apparently the cap says 220 * 210 (I saw this myself) but in UK terms this means you need to put 39 PSI in each wheel

Mine were each about 30 PSI before so after filling them up the tyres now look filled up :D

Thanks everyone for the help

What is strange is he also helped to check the water level but he could not close the front bonnet no matter how hard he tried :(

I have tried to shut it myself but it just remains a tad open and wont click shut.

Does anyone know how to fix this as he mentioned this could be very dangerous ! :(

Just drop it from say 40 centimeters and it should close.

We tried that may times without any joy :(

Is the opening switch (which sticks out of the grille) staying out all the time? It maybe worth having a look at that. PS I use 2.1bar front and 2.0bar rear for my tires , unsure of the imperial measurement as my gauge has no old style measurements on it.

39 PSI seems a little high although your car is clearly different to mine. FWIW the Haynes manual has the figures the wrong way round anyway. I put my fronts on 34PSI and rears on 32PSI. Seems to handle fine now I corrected them!

Also make sure that bonnet is down securely for safety reasons!

39 is way to high.

32/30 or 34/32 will be fine.

Ref bonnet not closing...... double check the release catch by the pedals has gone back to its closed position and not stuck on the mat etc Catch in my golf used to stay in open position unless manually pushed back. No ammount of slamming bonnet would close it.

I've got my pressures at 40 left and 30 right to help the damn pulling to the left :-(

Lol, tried four wheel alignment? Rear wishbone bushes?

I put 34 psi in everycar i have owned, they always drop a few psi anyhow

Skoda tell me there's nothing wrong with it.

I've only had it a couple of months and I'm thinking of getting rid of it already.

Fine car in every other respect but the pull to the left is driving me bonkers.

I know what you mean, my old 1.9 TDi Fabia always used to pull slightly to the left, from new and I was told the same thing. They told me it was a trait of all the cars with that engine, including the octavia.

Oh FFS. I was going to trade it in for an Octy. MR2 it is then.

39 may seem high, but tyre pressures are dependent on various factors..

Lets say you run all your tyres at 34psi (given instructions on the inside of the fuel flap).

Tyre manufacturers will probably advise at sticking to that figure on an unladen car. Then add 5psi for motorway driving and add another 2psi on top if the car is fully laden on a motorway.

So you could for the example above you could be driving at:-

34psi - on your own in the car with no real additional weight and using normal roads.

39psi - driving on your own in the car on the motorway, with no real additional weight in the car.

41psi - driving on the motorway fully laden. i.e. boot full and all seats occupied.

I typically run around 36psi in my Dunlops to be honest, I use the motorway 5 or 6 days out of 7, but I don't have any weight in the car whilst driving.

REMEMBER - tyre pressures on the inside fuel flap only apply to the original tyres which came fitted to the vehicle coming off the production line. Anyone running low profile tyres or anything different than the norm, will probably advise a different value. There are plenty of people on here with different spec tyres.. I'd say its a bit of trial and error and you'll find out soon enough what suits the car and feels better on the road. Just check your tyres every month.

Sounds like they're fobbing you off. I've now done 15k and haven't ever noticed the car pulling to the left.

I fact I'm getting paranoid coz nothing at all has gone wrong - not even a bulb!

Like that guy in the Honda advert - "The only problem is not having problems!" :D
