vRS - Fraying / Bobbling Seats

Featured Replies

I haven't posted in a while on this forum but am in need of some advice having noticed something on my 6 month old Mk2 vRS TDi Octy.

The drivers seat is starting to have what I would call a 'bobbling' effect on the base of the seat where the fabric is starting to fray due to constant use. I would say it's caused by frequent getting in and out of the car as the area affected is where I swivel my backside in order to get in or out.

The passenger and rear seats are relatively unaffected so far as they get much less use than the drivers seat. As it is my everyday car it obviously gets used most days.

Is there anything I can do to stop this getting any worse or is it a common problem? Will it get much worse over time?

There's always the option of getting the seat re-covered eventually but I don't know how much this would cost and whether it would be worth it?

I,ve had my vRS tdi since September and i have got this bobbling on my drivers seat . at first i thought it was just me been to fussy thats why i didnt bother posting anything . I bought a seat cover to protect the drivers seat , wasnt cheap tho £22 but it has the slots in the side for the airbags

just found this . . . Car Seat Covers, waterproof boot liners, tailor made car mats, 4x4 accessories

That's what I thought before posting about it but at least I'm not alone!

I suppose a seat protector will stop it getting any worse but is there anything I can do to get rid of the bobbling effect that's already occurred? What has anyone else done about it?

Thanks for the input!

This is a common problem with the original seat covers.

Skoda should replace them without hesitation.

In Germany a lot of VRS owners have this problem. And a lot of seatcovers are already replaced by the dealer.

My seats are still in good shape after >35000mls (60000km).

Its a shame to cover them coz the seats are so nice looking , i normally put the seat cover on for a week or so then take it off for a week lol .

Hi Smog monster, where did you get your seat cover from please?

Regards

Mac

On my vRS I got the seat cover replaced on warranty for the same thing, they noted it then did it on it's first service @ around 15k miles ish iirc

My rear seat was getting bad with the grey alacantara furring up quite badly with the child seats being fitted, I never got any joy with the rear seat covers getting replaced :rolleyes: my bad for not having "Skoda approved child seats"

I'd get yourself down to the dealers and ask them to change it.

Got mine from a place nr me in Stockton On Tees called Autoplus 01642 556000

Cost £22 and has velcro sides for the airbags to deploy , elasticated round the bottom , pre cut holes for the seat winder wheel thingy .

I had it fitted to my Vectra but fitted it to my Octy vRS, very good fit , made from a water / oil resistant nylon and not very slippy to sit on either

Noticed this also when I purchased a 6 month old Vrs Tdi. Slight bobbling on the drivers seat. Took it to my local dealer who said it wouldn't be covered under warranty, as it was just normal wear and tear, despite the car only having done 11500 miles at the time.

Managed to improve the situation massively by taking my mach 4 razor and gently shaving the excess fluff/bobbles off. Its not as dodgy as it sounds and I didn't catch or nick the fabric once. Made a huge difference to the appearance of the seat.

You can get things to remove bobbling off jumpers - look like an electric razor which funnily enough I have used (a Philishave!!!) on a nylon side panel in a Ford Focus to get rid of bobbling a few years back and it worked OK:D

So you think it should be sorted out under warranty? That did cross my mind but thought the dealer would just put it down to general wear and tear. Very worrying if it is considering it's only done 5500 miles and is only 6 months old!

I think I'll point it out to the dealer at its first service which should be due around September or just before.

Don't really want to go down the route of covering the seat as one of the reasons I bought the car was because I liked the interior trim! Aside from that, I don't see why I should have to cure a problem that shouldn't be occurring in the first place?

Should I get the dealer to replace just the affected seat or all the covers and where would I stand with such a request?

As I mentioned in my post, I got my drivers seat cover swapped out on warranty without to much hassle, but the rear's the dealer was ok, but SUK would not treat it as warranty as it was "caused" by my kids and their car seats.

If you have a good dealer, it should get through a warranty claim imho. Seat coverings should last more than 10 or 12k miles, again imho :)

Just the affected.

Sure it should be done under warranty as it clearly isn't an acceptable level of wear for 5500 miles and if necessary I'm sure you'd win in the small claims court.

I wouldn't wait any longer though, get the problem looked at ASAP.

I have the same problem but its probably from where the child seats mount as far as Skoda are concerned but I ALWAYS put a towel between the child seats and the car seat. I've done about 7k miles and am no impressed with the level of wear. I shall be raising it with them in the next week.

Wouldn't it be on variable service intervals, 20000 miles or 2 years?, unless you have a service package with the car. Check this with your dealer as well.

Actually I got 3 years free servicing as part of the deal which means it needs to be serviced every 10000 miles according to the paperwork. I wouldn't want to wait as long as 20000 miles in any case as I like to keep my cars regularly serviced (don't personally believe in long life services)

I'll take up VRStu's advice and get it looked at ASAP, hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so as very busy at work...

Thanks for the input guys, it's very much appreciated :)

Is this post going to finish up as long as the 'fuzzy seat/fabric fraying' post on the Fabia area? Currently 11 pages 208 posts. Seems that Skoda are a bit inept at choosing their seat fabrics!

I have noticed a degree of wear to the 'mesh' base section on my seat; I guess caused when I swivel in the seat getting in and out.

Not a problem for me though at present as the seat is presently stored in my garage with my 7 year old leather Recaro seat being in the car. I doubt the OEM seat fabric would last 7 years though!

Had a look at the Furby page and can't believe people had so many problems. I had a Furby vRS before this and never had a single problem in the 3 years that I had it but then the fabric did seem much harder wearing than that of the Octy.

It is just the mesh fabric that's 'bobbling' as the rest of the seat is fine as far as I can tell. Going to book it into the dealers as soon as possible for it to be looked at though.

I hope this thread doesn't become as long as the Furby page but at the same time it would be interesting to note how many other people have had this same issue?

I had the same problem on my 06 vRS. Took complaint to dealer (Newbury) and they recovered the seat at no cost.

Beware however that when they did this they scratched the door sill cover taking the seat in and out and the car developed an airbag fault after the refit (presumably down to the loom in the seat not being fit properly).

So took it in for one fault and two more were generated. They did fix it all for free, but the sill cover specifically took them ages to do (they ordered the wrong part for starters).

I had a similar issue on a Renault after maybe 20k miles and they replaced the seat covers without argument.

It's reassuring to know that manufacturers are sorting issues like this. There must be an accepted level of wear and tear for the age / mileage of the car and obviously wear such as this is not acceptable for a 6 month old car!
