Red Eye

Feel free to slap me silly for not knowing my Skoda badging/engine conventions but....

With my Octy in for a major service and MOT today, I was given the keys, not to the underpowered Fabia estates, but to a 1.4 TDI Fabia, Comfort Spec.

Very nice it seems too. Steering frighteningly light, gear shift equally so.

A little sluggish initially, but get it past 1500rpm, it's better and over 2500rpm, push it to 3500/4000 and I like that sound....hmmm, grunty.

However, the speed at which i shot across a road and almost into a wall doing that this morning makes me ask - what exactly is under the bonnet?

What does it symbolise that the "TDI" badge on the back has the "DI" bits in red?

Mine had 'DI' in red and it's the PD 1.9 TDI 100bhp lump :D

Chris

If it's definitely a 1.4 TDi then it's the 75bhp PD 3 cylinder engine. I know someone that has it in a Polo and it seems to be a cracking little engine.

Must be the 1.4...

Cracking little engine is right. That top-end roar/grunt and transmission whine doesn't shout diesel, sounds almost "sporty"

That said, if it wasn't for the poor space (I'm 6", massive Samoan Rugby player type) I'd probably buy one for my next car - which will have to be a TDI at least. ;)

It's a 75bhp and about 150 ft/lb 3 cylinder tdi with the pumpe deuse injectors. It's all aluminium and because it's only got 3 cylinders it's really light compared to the 1.9 lumps. This makes the car seem really nippy and the handling isn't as stodgy as a 1.9.

I had this engine in a Seat Arosa, It was great fun and could 80mpg

Know some local instructors who are using the 1.4tdi and are loving it! Seriously quick, and I agree steer better than the 1.9 before sturt brace. One of them is fitting a seat sport brace.....

:uglyhamme

"Feel free to slap me silly"

Happy to oblige!

I'm 6 foot and twenty stone and drive the furby quite happily.

Crap for shagging in though.

Apparently.

I'm not saying it isn't comfortable, but given my chest size, rubbing shoulders with any front seat occupant might prove unnerving. Plus, I drive with the seat all the way back, which creates problems for rear seat passenger movement ability.... not that i'm commenting on your other observation, apparently"

Plus the boot doesn't seem big enough to take my Fender Amp and Guitar on the weekends, so there is no way it could swallow the PA and drum kit too. The Octy on the other hand is, and has been known to fit me in the boot with extra room too ;)

When there are different versions of the same capacity engine , the more red letters the higher the output.

On the Octy 1.9 TDI there is a

90 bhp , all black

110 , red I

130 , red DI

VWs also have the 150 bhp version where all the letters are in red.

With the furby things get a little less straightforward , but there have been previous threads on this so it may be worth a search.
