So so angry with Peugeot

Featured Replies

I took my wifes car into my local dealers today for a warranty issue, they have spotted the fault and will be replacing the part on Monday so am happy about that.

Anyway, they have also told me that I need to discs and pads on all 4 corners costing around £600 as they have "corroded". This is not warranty due to the parts being wear and tear, now, if they had worn out and needed replacing then I would understand but corrosion is not wear and tear, if all 4 corners have corroded after only 13000 miles then something is wrong. What is making me mad/worried about it all is I took it in December as I was concerned about the state of the brakes, I was told they were fine, nothing wrong and should be good for atleast another 15K. Then in Feb it went back for a safety recall where brakelines were changed, new ecu and all 4 wheels had been off, yet nothing was said, now they are all "dangerously corroded"???

The explaination for this I have been told is its been raining alot and I have only done 1000miles in 4 months!!!! I have never been so angry.

I have raised a case with Peugeot customer services about the fact that this has clearly been missed twice and also that I want them replacing under warranty as corrosion is not wear and tear.

What do you guys think?

Go somewhere else for a second opinion. Having said that the one year old 309 we had needed new pipes!

I'm never buying any more Frog motors

I think you've been humped by Peugeot. Been there myself, it'll have to be something very special for me to darken their door again.

Sorry but what do you Really expect when you buy/own a French motor.

I would never nowadays part with my cash for a FRENCH motor!!

2nd opinion is good also but i wouldn,t pay for brakes at all after what you have stated.

£600 for 4 discs and 2 sets of pads  blatant rip-off , its only 2 hours labour tops ,

the pad back plates must be made out of platinum and the discs out of titanium

I have had many french cars and they have all been great, unsure why they get such a bad rep.

Will have to see what the customer service case I have raised says. Hopefully they will just bite the bullet and get it fixed.

when i lived in Worksop, I went to that dealer with the idea of buying a 106 GTI... they didn't take me seriously at all, because I was going to use it as a driving school car, and tried to sell me a 1.4 "quicksilver" ... also wouldn't give me any discount...

so I went to citroen (different owners to who they are now in 'sop... now, they're just as bad as the pergeot garage) and bought a saxo VTR..... drove it round to the pergoet garage with my roof sign on, and said... "here... look at the £10k sale you lost , just because you treated me like a idiot......" :P

hope you get some help from their CS ........

My dads rear disks on his Xsara were flagged as being excessively corroded at 18 months and 15k miles... They wanted £300 to repair, so we got some pads and disks from a local motor factors for £80 and took me about 2hrs to fit them including scrubbing his wheels...

Sounds like a rip off to me. But FWIW, the disks definitely were corroded. :(

Modern cars in general seem to be really heavy on discs.

I replaced the original front discs on my first Rapid at 160,000 miles and 15 years!

While I think the dealer might be ripping you off I can see why they wouldn't cover corrosion of disks under warranty - they're cast iron/steel so completely unprotected. It's only constant wear which keeps them shiny. Mine rust while I'm washing them :(

I managed to speak to the guy who actually worked on my Furby for its service back in Jan (3 yrs, 25k) and specifically asked him about state of discs as car is always outside (rain) and close by the sea (salt in the air), and I was concerned about how they might be fairing. He said 'absolutely fine, bit of corrosion on the inside but no more than you would expect'.

Brakes will corrode and infrequent use will accelerate this corrosion. Manufacturers service schedules are partly to blame as quite often they will only specify a visual check and quite often it will be with the wheels on. Also when the customer shops around for a service price it is the lowest one that wins, or they think that because it has a warranty that it must go to a dealer, invariably the customer is reluctant to pay a little more for the pads to be removed, freed off and have the discs cleaned.

£600 is alot for discs and pads, however the dealer should be quoting the retail rate for genuine parts and the Peugeot book time for fitting them, not mention the £105 that the government will take off you.

Take it to an independant garage and get a second opinion, and if they confirm what Peugeot are saying get a price from them. It could be bad timing at the end of quarter 1 and the parts department is trying to meet its target for service/maintenance items.

It's a bit late now but for future reference corroded brake discs are not warrantable, but if there is a brake vibration/judder that could well be a different matter.

SWMBO's Suzuki had the disk's replaced under warranty at it's second service & inspection. The pad's weren't covered though £46 for those.

That was just the front's

we have a disc lathe at work , this is for warranty work on Mazda brakes if they have any judder issues, works very well at removing rust build-up aswell

My boss has a 206CC. It's only done 15000 miles but is already on its second set of discs and second exhaust. Peugeots response? She doesn't drive it enough :rolleyes:

Toyota did new discs for me when the fronts where diagnosed as excessively corroded and the car had around 40,000 miles on the clock.

£600 is a total rip off. Try GSF carparts.

It wouldn't be a 307 would it?? I'm an ex peugeot mechanic, and there brakes are crap, i cannot comment on the price as it would depend on the labour charge. If its only surface corrosion then the dealer should be able to skim them, peugeot make all dealers have a skimming machine for warranty work as the won't pay for discs on warrenty.

85000 miles and 8 years on my Octavia and the it still has the original discs and pads on the front. Rears were done in November last year.

I'd never buy a French car myself, not the brand so much, I just can't stand the attitude of them, (not all of them mind).

If people like them then fair enough, but you need the dealers behind them too, sounds like these things should br a warranty item anyway.

I have just got to the point of changing the discs on the furby at 62,000 miles.

I still don't find the build quality to be anywhere near say a VAG group car or even Ford, my 'ol chap has always had them and his new focus is great.

Ben

p.s. It's my 1,000th post....whoop :D

Renault dealer near me is actually not bad. Car wasn't great though so he got quite a bit of warranty work but servicing was done by an independent.

Disks on my Clio lasted less than the front tyres. About 40k for the disks and 45 for the tyres.

Independent said that in general the brakes on French cars were bad and didn't last. He was an ex Citroen garage owner. He meant disks and callipers were all bad.

Build quality was pretty poor in general. I never had a major breakdown but there was just a regular drip of broken bit's an pieces and feeling of impending doom when driving it.

Peugeot has a bit of a reputation for expensive servicing do they not? Never a brand of car I've liked to drive.

What Peugeot is it btw?

Brakes discs and pads aren't usually covered under warranty.

I know the Koreans 7 year Kia warranty they now cover the clutch and transmission.

Is there a reason why they are corroded?

Maybe they got too wet? harsh driving style?

recent cold weather meant lots of salt on the roads?

Is it losing brake fluid?

I don't like Peugeots myself. Wouldn't mind maybe the odd drive in one but I'd neer buy one.

if you use them they dont corrode, the fiat is now on 38,000 miles, and just had its (second) service....

report on the brakes:

front discs fine, front pads another 8,000 miles in 'em

rear discs/pads : as new.
