Wind Noise at VERY High Speed?

Featured Replies

This is an odd one but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as to where to look for a 'noise' that is only occuring at VERY high speeds (WELL in excess of 100mph and discovered whilst on my recent trip to Germany :nervous:)

It's deffinately not engine noise as you'd hear it in lower gears, it's like a 'buzzing' which starts and remains at a constant pitch/tone so I'd like some suggestions as to where to start looking, perhaps it's piece of trim but it sounds like it's coming from the engine bay.

Suggestions welcome but dont ask me to replicate it! ;)

It does get very windy north of 145mph. If you don't get to those speeds very often it might shock you just how noisey it is, or if you do go that speed often but in an A8 or an S-Class a vRS will sounds very, very noisey in comparison.

For humour try doing 160ish mph in a Sl55 with the roof down.

I need to clarify that it hasn't done it before, only since the new fuel pump has been fitted!

I was going to suggest putting a line of tape over the wing mirror joins to see if it goes away as I got that at >100mph on the autobahn last year.

The extra fuel now getting through could just be changing the frequency of engine vibrations and so making something else resonate.

It's probably worth checking everything is clamped down where it is supposed to be, check under the car to make sure the fuel lines are not loose and also to check all the tyres to make sure there is no damage to any of the surfaces etc if you can't track it down.

You got a cold, or did you drink a lot at the weekend

Not a problem either way :D

Perhaps your engine under tray is vibrating?

Could it be the sound of distant police sirens?

I thought that too, but all seem secure down there

Simple - Slow down.

Yes but what about the engine tray:confused:

Is the fuel pump secure and not starting to resonate/ work its way loose with the increased flow rate?

Did an indicated 125mph in the MX5 with the roof down once (OK so probably only 110mph to 115mph) and that was bloody noisy so 160 must be hellish!

Steve,

If i were you i wouldnt worry about it.

I often did in excess of 140+ mph whilst living in germany and i got the same noise that you get. (without the pump) i did the same as you and checked the whole car over but couldnt see anything wrong. in the end i put it down to either the wing mirrors as cheezemonkhai has already said or that the force of the wind passing through the car somewhere was making the noise.

I also did find that i had a strange noise coming from the CD changer through the speakers at that speed too. it didnt happen with MP3 cd's just a strange whine as i accelerated.

try doing 164mph then it gets mega noisy and you need the stereo above 16 to drown it out:rofl:

It's deafening and actually quite scary. Don't particulary want to do it again in a hurry the same speeds in a S500 was quite pleasant, you could even hold a conversation.

could it be the air vent? i get this on one of our lorries at work when it goes above 50mph.

Its wingmirrors for me at 140+. The noise is enough to make me back off the throttle sharp'sih - It's horrid!

Might try the tape thing, or maybe fit some ch4v M3 type mirrors!?

Oh Steve?! Need to ask?! When have you been on the autobahns since the fuel pump was fitted?! :P

he has one not far from his house along with a private road and runway to vagcom test it on ;)

He clearly has way too much money! ;) Obviously enough to just nip over to the autobahns for some testing.:D

and sit down in the foriegn town of JKM ;)

the foreign town of JKM ;)

Hmmm, I remember seeing that signposted about 100 miles into Germany. :D
