TomTom into dashtop box?

Featured Replies

Has anyone installed a TomTom Go 520 or 720 in the dash top box so that the lid, when open, shields the screen from sunlight? I have an older TomTom Go 700 which is too big (front to back) to fit vertically in the box. I don't want to fit it permanently but I thought it could be a good place for the satnav. I'd be grateful for comments.

What a stunning idea  I will have to look at that:cool:

Not really got any pointers for you, but I just wanted to say it sounds like a fine idea. I can't see GPS reception being adversely effected by it as the MFD2 gps antenna works fine "inside" the dash.

If you could get an off the shelf gps to fit, it sould make a good permy / hardwired solution

I have mine sat in there when im using it, tis indeed a good place :-)

I wouldn't want it permanently wired unless the lid of the box could be shut on it when not in use, thus hiding the satnav from a friendly brick through the window!

I too sit mine in the tray for local journeys...

I'll have a play with my 520 later and see what the score is. :)

Thats where I keep my N20 - use a bit of antislide rubber mat to keep it from sliding about

Keep my 520T in there too, not hard wired, just sits there when required. Bit more awkward if the battery runs out and you have to run the cable but otherwise. No need for a window mount imho.

pictures ..... come on gent's ..... pictures. (Go on Tom, it's an excuse for pictures:))

My sony satnav won't fit in there. :(

My Garmin Nuvi-250 fit in the ashtray - Yes it's true

I put mine in there too as the mount sucker snapped off. I angle the mount at 90 degrees and tighten it. It's actually a better position that when its on the windscreen.

You wanted pictures, so just for you oh Fluffy one!

I normally sit it in like this, as it wedges quite snug. I only do this for short, local journeys where I'm not certain of an address.

But it also fits like this

You can't store the TomTom in the top cubby hole though :(

So for long journeys it goes in the corner of the windscreen

And after I put it in its lovely snug case

And store it under the passenger seat

THE END.

i got a better start up splash screen than that if you want it tom ;)

I'd love it Carl!

tom you have mail ;)

i tried it with a tomtom1 but it didnt like it there.

I have the estate and leave my Tom Tom on charge in the boot.

 Very good!

I have toyed with this idea in the past - I worry my Tomtom might fall out due to some spirited driving. I wonder if some velcro strips would do, or a velcro strap over the top of the satnav?

I don't use my satnav enought to worry though - the screen is good enough.

I have a Tom Tom 910 and in its original case when not in use I hide it in the ashtray. To do this means you have to take the ashtray out but it just squeezes in tight. My car had a DSG so is parked with the gear lever up against the closed ashtray so to speak. This keeps it out of sight and is difficult to remove without shifting the gearlever out of park which needs the keys. Obviously I bung it on the windscreen to use but it is a good hidey hole.

Thanks for all the comments - will buy a 520 or 720 later this week. Haven't really decided as the only difference seems to be the European maps. Amazon are selling a 520 for £145 - seems a good price.

Need to get some velcro for mine as indeed i tried putting my navman in there. it was just thin enough to be there when closed too, however meant the flap didn't open so haven't tried again.

Anyone know where I can get velcro strips or circles from?

somewhere like Hobbycraft will do the velcro - not sure if there is one your way!

I have my 720 on a Brodit Pro Clip just below the Air Vents. The clip that fits between the bottom of the Air vent and top of the Radio. Works very well and easy to see operate in that position.
