Radiator mounts?

Featured Replies

Please can anyone who has changed these tell me what is involved as i think mine have gone.I have tried to move my radiator to create the noise but doesn't seem to move or make the noise that i have when going over bumps.

Cheers

If the radiator's not moving, I think your problem is more likely to be ARB mount bushes or droplinks.

Hope this isn't too off topic or hijacking but my radiator is moving so would be interested to know how easy this is to do also!

I did a temporay fix for 58p in B and Q

Pipe lagging jammed under the rad.

Already done them once and they lasted about 3 months, tbh I can't really offer any advice as I half did them with my mate.

VRS phil is the man you need as he modded he mounts to make them last longer.

I'm sure he'll be along soon

Mine's gone on the drivers side, next to the headlight. It's not flapping around so I'll sort it out later in the year. Probably.

What are the implications of leaving it until my next service? I've got 1500 miles left to my 40K service but as a worst case scenario, can it drop off?

Certainly wont drop off mate. The bushes are just used to seat the rad so all that will happen is the noise getting more louder and constant over time.

I changed mine because of excess movement, and I thought the noise I was getting was due to these. Involved removing the bumper, and both headlights, and a bit of fiddling to get the old ones out, and the new ones in. Radiator was much more secure afterwards, but noise was still there, and it turned out it was the front ARB bushes afterall:rolleyes:

Mine have been doing it for about 6 months now. If you get the squeak when shutting the drivers door then chances are its the rad mounts.

Changing is not too difficult. It's just a little awkward. As said, bumper and lights need to come off. Three of the mounts are easy enough (both upper mounts and lower N/S). The Lower 0/S is obstructed by the AC components and can be a bugger to get out. I would advise taking the other three mounts off first which allows for a little extra movement from the rad, then you should be able to get the last one out. Then fit the new lower n/s mount first... then refit the rest.

The mounts are clearly designed to allow a small amount of vertical movement. The problem seems to be that when they wear they allow the rad to move back and forwards slightly which causes the clunking noise when closing the door or driving over rough ground.

I injected a small amount of black Sikaflex windscreen sealant into each mount. I injected just enough to offer some additional support whilst hopefully allowing the radiator to expand and contract naturally with the heat cycles.

6 months on it's still fine so touch wood it's done the job!

Another cause of noise when closing the door seems (on my car at least) to be the under trays. Under the front bumper there are little 1/4 circle trays on each side. These were slightly loose and were able to knock against the bottom of the vertical splash guard which runs up to the inside of the wheel arch. I put a small screw in each side to secure the under tray's more substantially and it seems to have cured the problem.

  • 2 months later...

Just fiddling around in my engine bay and noticed i can push the bottom of my radiator back very easily by a centimeter or two. The rad doesn't move up and down, and the top mounting seem to be fine, as there's no movement at the top. But it feels like there are no bottom rad mounts atall, the whole rad pivots about the top mounts. Is this normal??

I have noticed a knock sometimes when going over speed bumps, very rarely, and had assumed it was my ARB bushes. But the sleeves on the ARB, between it and the bush, are fine. So I'm thinking the rad mounts could be dead.

Cheers in advance guys.
