Is it worth me getting 4 toyo 888s for the Ring?

Featured Replies

Its like a cost/benefit analysis. :o

Cost = well over £400 for a set of 4 plus fitting. Also, they only seem to come in 205/40 R17, not my preferred 215/40 R17....

Its either that or just get a new set of T1Rs for the trip. :) By May I well be needing a pair anyway.

go with T1R's

If the weather is bad or anything i bet you would end up papping your self with them on

Wouldn't bother Jason.

my friend had them on his teg and wow,

if you can get a set for just track use on some spare wheels the do it, cause they are imense in the dry, but brown stain time in the wet

Hmm, I don't have a spare set of wheels though - Need one more evolo VW alloy to make a spare set though. :D

I think I will just buy a fresh pair of T1-Rs for the rear before I go. :) I was running on Kuhmo V700 semi slicks last time I was at the ring and they were very good. I would rather, this time, just drive there, around, and back on the same tyres.

As long as you've 'scrubbed them in' before you get to the ring ;)

They're fantastic tyres if you can afford them, but agree they're a little scary in the wet.

Is it worth your while buying a spare set of wheels ?

Outlay will be a lot at first, but then if you stick to using them for trackdays only, and not the road, they'll last a fair while. :)

How about the hancook Rs2's ??

I know dave (corradoboy) was impressed with his at the blyton track day. And they arnt too expensive £60 a corner for 16's.

My personal preference would be to run just normal road tyres, youll be spending more time on the roads than on the ring so just go with something like the T1-Rs

Jason, I bought some for the Octavia when I took that, they got me there from sunny Blackpool, 40 laps of the ring, and back home. They may have been "borderline" :o when I got back, but they did the job very well.

I love these 888's, and in fact may have a set on 16" steelies in my garage....but you would have to make a decent offer.

As for wet weather performance and being scary - they are better in damp/wet conditions than any road tyre I have ever used. The issue is when you have standing water. Then you slow down to an appropriate speed. I will be running these as my primary tyre for the summer.

Problem with the 888's IMHO and from much discussion with a driver of an atom, is while they stick very well in the dry, if you do lose it it will be at much higher speeds.

Also they have almost no grip in standing water.

What about something cheap and grippy FK452, Toyo t1r etc etc to put on and destroy over the weekend.

Im guessing you've never been to the Ring before in which case I honestly don't think its worth shelling out the extra for the 888's. If you were doing a UK track day where you'd get 50 or 60 laps in then yeah defo worth it. But as you'll be spending most of your time learning the track you won't get the chance to fully exploit the tyres.

T1 R's will be more than adequate

Jasons been once or twice to the ring  I had a sooty (not the glove puppet!) face to prove it!

Haha, sorry my bad... Thats what you get for being new to the Forum :(

In which case then surely he knows if he felt his tyres were on there limit around the Ring??? Last time I drove round there was on Nankangs :D Not the greatest tyre in the world...lol but it still didn't stop me having a great time.

I bet the trip there and back would take a couple of mm off the 888's anyway... Nicely scrubbed in. :)

just get the t1r's mate they are good enough:D
