Temperature warning on the dash in the morning.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I noticed a red coolant temperature warning on my dashboard when i turn on the car in the morning. specially when the weather is a bit colder.

Have you guys got any experience with this warning? If so what was the solution?

Any info much appreciated

IIRC it's a faulty sensor. They were quite common a few years back aand were replaced under warranty

You can sometimes fix it just by topping up the tank a little. On the odd occasion it still happens to me, I check the tank's not leaked and go off on my merry way. At the next set of lights, I switch off and back on again and the warning's gone. At the end of the day, if the engine's cold, it won't be overheating, and if the level's OK then you can be pretty confident it's the sensor playing up rather than anything more serious...

Mine does this! I turn it off and back on again at the moment, but apparently you can clean up the sensor by giving it a scrape with a screwdriver or something to sort it. Do a search, it's been covered before.

You will require a new coolant header tank as the level sensor is built in to it -I work @ VW we have replaced loads of them

Mine used to occasionally do this when it was cold, but as the level was always ok I learned to ignore it :)

As Ap0gee said, driving a couple of miles, turning the engine off and then on again always cured it.

My vrs had that fault. Quite a common issue on this part throughout the vag group apparently. To rectify it all I did was remove the blue cap from the header tank and scrape the two sensor prongs with a clean screwdriver. This should remove enough of the thin oxide that forms on them to give the correct reading. HTH

i agree with markseth, happened to me, gently scraped the prongs on the sensor, then voila!

Then syponed out enough to check that the sensor was still functional just incase!

I just topped up my coolant and it went away!!

Guys,

Thank you very much for all the info.

The level of coolant is definitely ok, so i'll now try the screwdriver trick.

I hope it will help

Cheers
