Hi James thank you for that remark, but how ??? cloth, !! when we open the hatch. dog has already one paw out., Carry this whatever ??? that will get even dirtier each time he emerges, where ?? inside the boot, ?? not in the car !!! Dog can go in and out many times times in course of a day, muddy wet, etc. We have a tray inside, but even the inside gets splashed , and we have to clean that off every trip. Looking for a answer from any other dog lover, with this problem. :confused:

You could try getting him to stay in the boot until you are ready for him to get out, allowing yourself time to put a towel across it. If you have trouble getting him to stay have plenty of treats available and show him them through the window. Start to open the boot and the second he makes a move give your stay command and shut the boot again. Keep doing the opening/shutting of the boot and the stay command until he gets the message and realises he isn't going anywhere until he stays put.

This could do your head in and take a while but he should cotton on quick and you will soon be able to just open the boot with him sitting until you are ready for him to move. I'm sure Hatchbag did some bumper covers but I can't remember if you had to have it made with their actual boot covers at the time of ordering.

you could use a camping insulation mat, if you pull enough of it out to cover the bumper each time the dog gets in/out. Not sure how you can contain the dogs mess once inside the car, that's another issue. You'll have to train you dog to stay put until you say otherwise.

Going to look into both options on the weekend. Dog to obey !! and some kind of short mat / cover that can rest in the boot tray nr the hatch, then we will pull it over the areas needing protection. Checked out Pixies " Hatchbag " site, but I think the Skoda tray we use inside has the floor covered, just need some kind of material to fold from the inside to the out quickly . That of course maybe scattered anywhere by the time we open the hatch up.

Don't skoda do some kind of accessorry flap that flops out and protects the rear bumper? I'm sure I've seen something like that on the website.

you can buy some clear protective film that you could apply over the bumper, it will probably be a right pain to fit though.

The film is easy enough, you use soapy water to float it into place and then squeegy it on. Its a simple flat area to do, we used to do it on Aston Marting front ends and bulbous wings.

With my skud I was given a nylon boot liner that had sides about 8" deep and there was a flop out piece to protect the rear bumper - it did a sterling job the few times I used it. I've seen similar items on flea-bay, look for mats and boot liners and then check out there other items

The film for front ends is usually a quite thin as whislt people want to protect their cars they don't want it visbible - however it protects against stones quite well at high speeds.....

Look at the bottom of the rear door on the wheelarch of your car and you should see the type of thing I mean.

This is a growing aftermarket item now but a tip for you; for such a simple, flat area some of our clients/dealers used window protective film (to stop glass shattering and falling out, security, etc.) which was a bit thicker.

Should easily withstand the dogs claws and is easily replaceable every now and then if it starts to go a bit tatty

I carry a couple of extra towels and use the "stay" command and open the boot slowly enough to put my arm under the door and hold Timmy before he can leap out. Once the door is open and I've laid the towels over the rear bumper I then let him out.

My parents have an English Springer Spaniel and cannot use my method as he gets too excited, they've found that a dog cage solves the problem and they can lay the towels down without having to hold him and he also seems to be calmer when travelling too.

I use this stuff, it comes in clear and is UV resistant so it won't yellow.

I have made my own tank protectors up for my custom painted Kawasaki and then made the sort of thing you are looking for on the octy, and for my mates CTR to stop his dive tanks and weights scuffing up the bumper.

It's around £10 per roll mail order or from bike shops and as it's clear you can trace out what you want to cut, then cut it with scissors or with the included craft knife.

Thank you Fluffmeister ,( nice Kawa) astonbuilder , hughm for latest, ideas. Will be trying Pixi and Matt command system first, as then we can use a towel etc. He does get excited though as Matt described, I mean he really wants to get into the hatch area at the slightest offering, but if we leave hatch open even a few seconds he is so excited he jumps back out again. We can give him the command to stay, and he will, but no saying for how long. Titbits do not interest him sorry Pixi, especially if he is about go on a trip. We have trained him not to have any food before traveling, because he used to get sick, only water of course. He will take a command though without treats and is still only 4yrs old.

Blimey your a bit strict not sure I love you any more.

Anyway the PAArsko solution is a freestanding dog cage for the dog and a large towel for the bumper. About a 1/4 of the towel sits under the boot mat so it wont move about and then when you open the boot unfold the towel over the bumper and it stays in place because the mat holds there. Then open the cage door and let Isobelle and Coraleigh (Westies) out.

They make cages for big dogs as well and it stops them breaking your neck and killing you if you have to do an emergency stop so I'm told.

Ignore my post, your dog is huge and you have a dog guard!!!!!!!!!!

Still a decent solution for iccle doglets with big attitudes though.

There has been a lot a help thrown up in this thread including many ideas , we thank you all for those . Unfortunately since I started the thread I have not even seen the 4x4 Combi. Wife is on a business trip and has taken the company Octy 1 Tor, but left the Octy 2 4x4 in the office underground garage in the city. This weekend we will start with the dog commands, whilst using the towel etc method. The full blown Skoda system folding from within seems to appose our Skoda tray that we already have fitted, and looks rather cumbersome. Boot space is used for laptops ( in cases) suitcases when on business, and has too look smart at all times, hence the Skoda tray as its removable and be cleaned easily. However it does cover what the other systems do not, that is the bumper, and the rubber seal around the hatch, and the plastic ( ribbed) section which gets absolutely filthy from dog paws and hard to clean. So command first then a rethink, thank you all again.
