What is annoying about driving in britain/england?

Featured Replies

Well To begin with....living in iceland i got used to driving with all my controls on the Left side, and driving on the right side of the road (ye see,the "Right" side)

and well i have sometimes wondered about moving to england or somewhere in britain because of the Gas prices for one and the car prices of course...i mean...my 1st car (wich i still have) i bought for circa 988 quid (or about 150.000 icelandic kronas)

but oh...the main thing is the fact that i could have bought the same car with just about the same milage for about half what i bought it for in iceland...or just about 4-600quid.

Note: the car is a Blue Skoda Felicia LXi from 1998 it has a 1300cc 68bhp engine (the mpi one).

the mileage on it was rather low as one might say...or just over 70.000 kilometres (dont know how many miles).

So that concludes it...

having a car in iceland is a bit expensive...so well...a good reason i might have to move to the "beloved" uk is among other reasons the gas prices, car prices, extra parts prices and repair prices,as i presume NOBODY at ALL would go so low as charge over 1300quid to change the clutch on a felly,no i didn't think so.

the only seemingly bad thing is i think getting used to driving on the left side of the road with the steering wheel on the right side (yes i've seen it on TopGear).

Please comment if you feel like it and please don't be rude.

It's an interesting perspective seeing the UK as a cheap place for motoring! Everyone there thinks it's expensive :)

i mean....the guys on Top Gear weren't lying about the car prices were they?

especially about the Reasonably priced car (a star in)

it being priced at about what....at the beginning 9999,5 quid, then going down to 7999,5 quid

in reality that kinda car would cost over 11000 quid in iceland...and who would dare to call that a "reasonably priced car",i'll tell ya....we here in iceland.

and when they were talking about that bloke who never spent over 200 quid on his cars...that wouldn't make any sense here in iceland, seriously if you live in iceland and you need a car that works or gets you from point A to B it'd be bound to cost at least 1300 quid.

The Uk aint as bad as some

For example Turkey, Road fund licence calculated by engine size is £130 for 1200cc and below, and up to a staggering £5000 for over 4000cc.

Fuel there is also about 5% dearer than the Uk, and the price of cars is horrendous.

Whats the Average wage in Iceland though ? I imagine with the higher prices comes a higher wage and dare I say it a higher standard of living?

If you can put up with hugely congested roads, a lot of bad and impatient drivers, with increased stress levels, with vandalism and a lot of terrible youngsters and a whole pile more of disincentives.

As I see it most of us here would love to bail out and go elsewhere.

bloody hell the countrys not that bad

Granted the roads are conjested and its getting more expensive to own a car

but ive managed to live here for the last 40 years and not have my car vandalised or robbed

Easy to get a Left Hand Drive (LHD) car here & cheaper as well.

Have a good look in Auto Trader here: Auto Trader UK - Buy & Sell New & Used Cars, Car Loans, Car Insurance

how come it's cheaper to have a LHD than a RHD?...makes no sense at all...don't you agree?

Well, because we drive on the left side of the road here in the U.K. LHD cars are not very popular and therefore they are cheaper to buy here. Makes sense to me ?

middle lane hoggers, people who are doing the speed limit but jam the brakes on to half the speed limit when they come to a speed camera.

Must admit i do hate the MOTCLOCs (members of the centre lane owners club) but i do admit to staying there in my own car sometimes , as the wider wheels and tyres tend to tramline on poor sections of the slow lane where the trucks have rutted the road. When im in a company vehicle and on company time its the slow lane all the way

You live in Cheshire. There is no crime in Cheshire.

Thank you also for commenting....

but the main thing is that i'd LOVE to movie to britain/london....could you guys come up with some good suggestions...where i could rent a flat for around 500quid (or much less) without it being a Shlat (****ty flat).

Cheers.

Personally I'd try and adapt to driving a RHD car. All the infrastructure and traffic laws are set up for RHD vehicles that you could be making a hard job harder by trying to learn a new driving style in a car not designed for them. (I'm thinking roundabouts, overtaking etc)

Just my opinion though :)

If you mean £500 Sterling a month, pretty much anywhere in Scotland, or the Northern half of England (down to about the M62 line).

You live in Cheshire. There is no crime in Cheshire.

£525pcm gets me a decent 2 bed top floor flat (penthouse :D) that backs on to picturesque woodland and farmland in Hemel (just outside the M25). You can go alot further south on £500pcm than the M62 line!

would you guys/gals say that a 500pcm is much for an 18 year old moving alone to the uk?

even so....could you keep on recommending any apartments or something...and places where i might get a job...and what's the normal payment you get from work....circa...my dad gets around 2.600pounds a month (circa) cause he's a cook for a crew on a ship

Hi DJOLi,

I have never driven on Icelandic roads, but when there someone did the driving for us.

It is a long time ago now back in 1973 when I visited on an Ulfar Jacobson excursion, not long after your people were having cod wars with the British. I have never returned but I hope to someday, before I am getting too old.

My name is actually in the visitors book, of the lovely church in Rekjavick, I cannot recall the name of it, but it is truely beautiful.

Things were very expensive then, and especially beer, and from what you say, the price of cars are also very expensive. But maybe prices are relative to wages, but I am not sure.

But why you would want to leave such a beautiful country as Iceland escapes me, and maybe I would swap with you. Were you charged the equivilent of 1300 quid for a clutch change, or was this just an example of Iceland charges?

Maybe it is better to buy the parts from the UK, and do most things yourself on the car, if you are mechanically minded. You certainly live in a paradise, as cold does not bother me.

Regards

You're going to have to narrow down all those questions, wages vary greatly depending what you want to do and where in the country you want to do it, plus if that part of the country supports the type of job you want to do. The rent also varies depending on where you live and depending on how much you earn whether you can afford it or not.

If your Dad earns £2,600pcm (£31,000pa) then he's paid a lot over the 'average' wage so it's unrealistic if you base your possible wages on that unless you're a well paid professional.

I think your best bet is to decide what type of work you're going to do and decide where in the UK you'd like to do it.

And is that before or after tax?

Average wage according to one source I found online is £457/week, so £1828 a month, or £23764 a year, before tax. At 18 unless you have a particular skill, you can expect less.

well..answering your comments back is....going to be straight forward....changing the clutch on my skoda felicia costed all in all 334,69 (including the clutch) (circa) in gbp's.

I guess/hope nobody in the uk would go as low as charge That Much for the changing of the clutch in a skoda felicia

anyway...about my skills....well...i've worked in a 24/7 for a couple of months...prior to moving back to my hometown...i would say that i'm not badly skilled at computers...knowing a lot about them...so working at a shop/computer repair shop would be an ok option...something a bit more intresting would even be good as long as i could afford a flat of some kind & a car...without being poor.

If you've read comments about "Skoda Main Stealers", you might guess this, but there are places which would charge more than £335 for a clutch change; in fact I'd cost that at 3 or 4 hours labour, and some dealers would charge out labour at £100 per hour, plus 17.5% tax!! OTOH my local garage would do it at £24/hr + tax.

As to your skills, you're probably not going to get a decent job in computing in the UK without some form of formal tertiary education certificate. I don't know enough about Icelandic eduation to map this across for you.
