Economy Drive!

Featured Replies

Just drive "normally"

and keep the car well maintained.

My mate still doesn't believe I can get up to 42mpg from my petrol Felicia

Also

Make sure tyre pressures are correct (can be slightly above)

I think thats about it.

I usually manage 60+ mpg if I'm reasonable with my right foot. So if I can anyone can!!!

No legal requirement to carry a spare in this country and if you do it can be as bald as a badgers' .... with no problems unless you decide to use it.

If you have a spare tyre it must be legal.

look up "Hypermiling", I first saw it on a yank VW TDi site (cant remember which). Theres guys doing crazy MPG figures in Passats, but depends if your comfortable doing things like coasting down hills in neutral etc....

Ive heard that doesnt help as the engine over fuels when in neutral? WHy waste the gravitional energy and let the engine make itself tick over when gravity down a hill will do the work for you?

I stand corrected. I did the 55-60mph drive and got 60.9 mpg door to door.

Very very very very boring though. :)

Whoa! That is impressive! Usually around 50mpg for me (mapped).

yes there is..

TDI PD Tuning Chip VW Audi Seat Skoda Ford Golf VRS on eBay, also Chips, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 02-May-08 12:45:06 BST)

buy one of these, i get nearly 80mpg when driving sensibly, and then 55-60mpg when driving like a *****.

proof: (and this is average over 250 miles of sensible driving)

so good.

if you try calculating your mpg you will find that the display is telling you big lies ;)

I think all a "tuning box" for£22 will do is remap your trip computer! hehe, if these simple turbo diesel units could produce the same economy figures as those new Blue Motions with the use of a simple box I think VAG would have invested billions into it already.

After looking at the ebay link, I think you're right!!!

There is loads of discussion here and on other forums about that tuning chip (ie 5p resistor in a box). The link below to SeatCupra.net will take you to a few typical responses to queries about it. I'm intrigued by how a device like this which results in the engine being overfuelled can decrease fuel consumption. Out of interest, how much has your insurance company increased your premium by for this performance mod?

Lets get realistic, Grannys don't drive economically, they drive slowly, which is NOT the same thing!!!

Driving economically is all about smooth driving, not heavy braking, as few gear changes as possible, anticipating traffic lights and junctions so as you don't have to change down as much or slow dramatically, the list goes on...

How many Grannys have you seen driving like that?

None, I shouldn't wonder!!

so good.

That's not proof - it's your lying b*******d of a trip computer. I can get over 80 mpg showing on my trip computer, but it's nowhere near what it actually does.

In these times of fuel crisis, one thing isn't mentioned. I get 63 mpg out of my Fabia VRS by altering my speed according to the landscape. So on a typical motorway, I drive uphill at 60mpg. And I drive downhill at 70mpg. I brake as naturally as possible and accelerate slowly but smoothly. That way my tank gives me 600 miles per filling.Whenever people mention fuel efficiency, they never mention the pitch of the road surface??

i have found staying in fourth gear gives my good mpg return around the local roads and country lanes

Last week I dove 187miles from Perth to past Helmsdale in the north of scotland, a mix of dual carriageways A&B roads and single track roads. Drove up in the rain at an average of 53mph and got an indicated 64.7mpg.

Drove back some days later in good weather, average speed 52mph and got 66.9mpg.

A fully loaded Fabia estate (52) TDI 100bhp.

Great car.

I'm sorry for the pain that I caused you....

but it's the truth!

 NOOOOOOO

I thought i was really getting 51 mpg :bandit:

I did an ecu reset the other day and it improved my mpg as it got used to the new fuel (it was running 95 now its on 99)

Driving style is the one.

I turned on the cruise control the other day at 70 mph and it wouldn't go over 52mpg. I then took over, stayed at 70mph and achieved 63mpg.

Used to hate diesels but the economy side of it is addictive lol :)

Well. . . they were 5 years ago lol

A tuning box does not display the accurate mpg due to the way it works (it gives a false impression that its higher than it is), a remap does.

yeh i found that when i had the tuning box on, i was getting 75mpg, but it wasn't that at all, because the tuning box advances the timing etc

remap is ecu based so would be accurate
