Economy Drive!

Featured Replies

Im about to pick up my Fabia vRS. However i want to make it as economical as possible so i deciced to save weight and reduce drag by:

Remove Spare

Remove Rear Wiper (must add a fair bit of drag going by old golfs where the wiper was at an angle for this reason?)

Remove door strips

Aero Wipers

any more ideas, or am i wasting my time?

proberbly wasting your time. The only true way to go on an economy drive, is to drive gently and not be heavy on the brakes and gas pedal. Driven properly you should see well in excess of 60mpg.

Sell it and buy a 1.4TDI or just enjoy your VRS.

OR

Get a 1.9TDI estate like me and have the best of everything

You could get it lowered, you would save drag on the height difference of the wheels.

Get a smaller aireal.

take out the parcel shelf, mats and take off the engine cover.

But i do think you wasting your time a little.

A re-map will mean that you will get better fuel econemy when driving like a granny.

Keep an eye on the MPG reading so you can learn how to drive economeclly.

Also, never fill the tank more than half way as your just dragging around half a tanks worth of weight!

narrow tyres on ultra light weight magnesium rims,

removed interior bar a couple of lightweight racing seats.

replace side and rear windows with perspex,

clear tape up panel gaps on bonnet wings and rear doors,

carbon ceramic brake conversion.

stainless exhaust.

ive not even got it yet!

spare wheel is about the only thing which will help. The other bits will make absolutely sod all difference. :D

Remove the rear seats too - they weigh a lot. Remove the passenger seat if not needed - same reason. Gut out the aircon as that saps economy even when off. Plus losing it all saves weight. Carbon fibre bonnet and panels. Plexi-glass windows and rear screen. Space saver wheels all round, pumped up to 45psi.

Oh, you could go on for miles. :D

Oh and a pretty serious suggestion. A big hybrid turbo is surprisingly economical off-boost compared to stock.

im trying to keep the car standard ish, need all my seats etc. Maybe im being a bit OTT as i have to put up with my mini doing 20mpg

Use public transport.....

Remember to fold your rear seats down and keep it polished to within an inch of it's life. That will help.

Haha

I thought it was an offence not to have a spare wheel in the car if it's fitted with one, especially for the motorway?

As for the rest, a waste of time and it will look silly, the rear wiper won't cause that much drag as you have a rear air spoiler on the end of the boot and one integrated into the rear bumper and they do work well.

Door strips are in the line of the air flowing past the car and they are plastic so basically weightless.

IIRC the front wipers are nearly consealed by the top of the bonnet, so there won't be much air flow trouble here. The manufacturers will test all this in the design stages of the car to get the drag cooefficient as low as possible.

I have a vRS and the best thing to do is to keep the tyres pumped up to the correct pressure, only carry the minimum in the boot, (spare oil, first aid kit etc.)

Don't drive it like an a**e either, I can easily get 50MPG on the daily journey to work.

I find V Power Diesel goes that bit further too.

Ben

YOU make the biggest difference. If you can't get 45+ in town and 60+ on a good run then have a serious look at your driving style, it's the biggest fuel saver...

Also, do you really need that cheeseburger for lunch? It all adds up

Are you sure? I drove like a granny for a tankful and only managed 52mpg!

I agree that for long runs you can see an average in the 60s but for an overall tankful I'd be surprised if many people manage over the mid 50s.

As everyone else says, if you're looking for economy then the major factor is going to be your driving style.

thank god for that i thought something was wrong with me/mine

Depends. I've driven like a granny and only got a 'real' 59.9mpg. Even the official figures are only 64mpg and they are never achievable in the real world.

If you want to believe your trip computer you probably can get well in excess of 60 mpg (I've seen well over over 70 on one of my trips). But the trip computer LIES.

say it aint so!!!!!!

I'm sorry for the pain that I caused you....

Economy mods....

Decat it! - Contenscious suggestion but if driven with conomy in mind it should help.

Remap it with Economy uppermost in the remap wish-list.

Attach a thick rubber pad to the underside of the throttle pedal. :D

I cant. Driven at normal eco drive (I dare not go below 65-70 on motorway) I get about 52-55mpg at best.

Never seen more than 55mpg other than for a short period of time...

Saying that I continually get ~48mpg at average of 85-90mph on way to Kent...

The only time I've ever got better than 50mpg was on the two occasions I did Manchester-Edinburgh non-stop, then Edinburgh-Manchester non-stop the same day. I wasn't hanging around though, so could probably have bettered it considerably if I'd grannied it. Wouldn't have been able to do it in one day, though... :D

 Why not? Best way for an economical drive is to sit behind a lorry doing 56mph or thereabouts in 6th gear (well off boost) most of the time (until you come to a hill!)

dont a de cat pipe damage the turbo?

have a search for SAFED (safe and fuel efficent driving).
