JoshH's Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

Megs gone!

I was pretty set on a VRS and planned to head down to see Sam (Vlad..) in Southampton to grab his vrs. But a bit of a suprise my mate who came to caste combe with me in September who had mega turbo issues offered me his car as he's off travelling in February!

It was a bit of a no brainer for me, I've known the car the 4 years he's had it, about a month ago it had a brand new Garrett pd150 turbo and the timing belt changed, 6 months prior it had new clutch and flywheel and an engine mount.

So pretty much the things that do go wrong, have. Apart from head gasket...ahem say no more!

As ever, big plans!

Before even having the car I have a good pile of stuff to chuck straight onto it.

  • EGR Delete.
  • CCV Mod/elephant mod.
  • New Weitec Hicon GT Coilovers.
  • Powerflex Dogbone Bush.
  • Powerflex Wishbone Bushes.
  • 312mm Front Brakes 256mm Rears.
  • Facelift Rear Lights.

Still waiting on some bits to turn up, but next on the list to purchase is Whiteline front and rear anti roll bars.

Then, FMIC and get some mapping sorted for it, how long I'll be happy sitting at just shy of 200bhp I don't know, probably not long and the turbo will be off getting hyrbidised lol

Will stick some pics up of all the parts shortly :)

Stay tuned!

Hopefully Jase ;) lemme know when they're ready :)

And thanks all, initial progress should be pretty quick lol.

Only current dilemma my brake set up is factory red from a golf anniversary, may just give them a run down and a blow over in red rather than try and colour match vrs green, it won't look too bad with red callipers, will it?

I was always against it unless they were brembos but reprinting and stripping callipers is my least favourite job!

I've got red calipers on the fronts and love the look. Better than the green in my opinion. B)

Looking forward to this!

Hey, I wanna ask you about the Megane. I have a 2009 197, the NA version of the engine, and it is giving me a lot of headache. It spends more time at the dealer than near my house. The car is amazing to drive, I would be happier with a bit more torque though, in every aspect; however, when it comes to reliability it is the worst car I ever owned! The engine just got back into the car two days ago after a full rebuild with 27K on the clock.

I bought the car with 100 miles on the clock; I am practically the first owner. I am very punctual about periodic maintenance and very gentle with engine when it is cold. I do drive it hard when the time is right, but most of my driving is highway-constant-speed driving.

If you share your experience in Renault hot hatches with me I would be very thankful because what is happening with my 197 is too crazy!

Well, I didn't have a single engine related issue!

The F4R engine is considered pretty reliable, variants of it have been around for many many years now. It seems you just have got a bit of a lemon!

You only usually get engine issues in the megs when you push torque beyond 300ftlbs.

What actually failed to require a rebuild?

The oil return valve to the oil pan stuck open! The bearing of the Connecting rod for piston 2 failed and rotated in its housing.

It isn't the engine only. The electrical system is bad too. I had the starter motor changed and the alternator. The knock sensor was changed too. Other than the electrical system and the engine, the thermostat gone bad on me. All the engine mounts were changed and some of them twice. The clutch slave cylinder failed while shifting when the car had around 20K on the clock.

Still, there is a problem the dealer could not fix and I would not understand until now! The car sort of miss fires and loses power between 2500 and 3000RPM. I feel it especially when I accelerate on 6th or 5th gently.

The car is still under warranty but it won't in a couple of months! I am sort of scared :/

Whats the 90 degree elbow for?

Edited by bowen

Delete -> plastic hard pipe mate :)

I recognize most of the parts and what they replace/do, but not the 90 degree bend.

Will have to have a south Wales meet, so you can show me.

Takes out the original 90 degree bend from the egr as you have to cut the priginal to make it fit with the egr delete kit

Sounds like your moving pretty quick with it all, nice work.

Also what colour is your fab?

Black mate! It's coming along quick considering I won't have the car off him for a couple of weeks haha!! Ill keep it off the road until after Christmas and get everything fitted hopefully by myself unless I hit any big stumbling blocks.

Not having a garage kinda sucks though, what with this pants weather :(

I hope you'll be bringing it to Castle Combe in April Josh! :)
