New owners not properly advised

Featured Replies

In the last couple of weeks I have had two friends with new Yetis who didn't KNOW they had cruise control! Never mind how to work it!

When I bought my Golf Plus, the handover was comprehensive and thorough with all the trip computer and cruise control functions clearly explained with no feeling of rushing me through it.

My thoughts are:-

1. The customers may not have been as interested as me when getting their new car ( maybe as interested as I would be when buying a washing machine!).

2. Dealer/salesman not doing much of a job at handover - they've got the money , anyhow.

3. The above friends may well have been told but, in the excitement of a purchase, forgot loads of info given at handover.....

Just some bank holiday Saturday musings from a 'soon to be Yeti' AWFabia.

Why didn't they read the brochure!

I agree the dealer should cover this during the handover, but who buys a car not knowing what bells and whistles its got-at least 2 by the looks of things...

I'd read the brochure to death by the time I picked.mine up

Suppose it's down to the individual. I was offered a full walk through of all the functions on the car but knew I'd only remember stuff after consistent usage, so basically took the keys and headed for the door. Maybe its a man thing. We only take instructions when all else has failed. :@

One man and one lady, so possibly not a 'man' thing........

I agree that the workings of the car should be explained at handover, but surely the purchaser should know whether s/he is getting fairly significant features such as cruise control!

Is it really a significant feature any more? Many new cars now come with it, especially at the price of the Yeti (of the spec that its standard on). Now I admit different manufacturers have different controls for it, but I wouldn't be offended if I wasn't shown how to use it, or many other 'standard' features of a modern car.

i would expect the dealer to go through the details of the vehicle unless I told them otherwise! !

I was offered a walk round the car with my salesman, but seeing as the car was almost exactly the same as my previous Octavia I had before, all he did with me was go through the pairing of the phone and the service interval.

Then I was off to work in the snow & ice in a brand new car

A TapaTalk enabled phone was used to write this...

RTFM, usual solution...

Quite so, but the manual is not the easiest thing to read, as it covers many items that may or may not actually be fitted to the model purchased.

Although you might reasonably expect most people to know the specification they have purchased!

I had a very comprehensive handover at Hughes on Friday. In particular, the salesman pointed out each of the options that I'd ordered to confirm that they'd been fitted to the car and, where appropriate, to demonstrate how they work. He also specifically mentioned the cruise control and how it worked, for which I was quite grateful as its operation is significantly different to that of the MB units I'm used to.

Right you are,Llanigraham , yours is the first clever answer in this thread.

Its a wee bit tricky turning the pages whilst driving though

Its a wee bit tricky turning the pages whilst driving though

especially when you've set cruise ( by accident, you were actually trying to put the wipers on ) and now looking to see how to turn it off

And your electric seat is adjusting itself, the dsg is lurching, the mirrors have a mind of their own, the esp light is flashing.

There would be more than wind noise coming from one's rear end then :giggle:

You shouldn't be driving the car if you don't know how things work. As previous posts have said, either ask or read the book. And who buys a car without knowing what it's got on it?

What have I started??

To be fair, I think that is reasonable in respect of customer-specified options, but I can quite understand how owners may not be necessarily be aware of all the standard equipment fitted. One another motoring forum I belong to there's a thread devoted to features discovered by accident (although those tend to be undocumented features, as opposed to ones you can read about in the manual).

If all else fails read the destructions ! Seriously though, has anyone downloaded the pdf for the Citigo's PID, how long would that take the salesman to explain. I wouldn't rely on the salesman to show me anything technical anyway, the one who sold me my recent cars is an extremely nice bloke, extremely helpful but not very techno savvy.

Couldn't agree more. When my wife picked up her Citigo, the PID had not come in so the following week the saleroom manager (!) brought it out to us and he did not even know how to attach/detach the monitor unit from the connecting arm! When, for fear of it being broken, I persuaded him to consult the instructions he realised that it hooks on/off with the help of a release catch (very obvious), rather than pushing or screwing as he was trying to do.

(Hope the last phrase doesn't get Bobdog going).

You might think that people would wonder what the extra switches on the indicator stalk actually do?

+1

Agreed, but it is easier if you put your phone down first .............
