Door speaker upgrades

Featured Replies

I fancy upgrading my door speakers in the Octi, but not sure on sizes or what to go for.

Any one reccomend anything worth while?

I put 6.5" in my octy.

Went for some rockford splits. You will have to remove the existing speakers as they are integrated pod and make your own ones up using MDF.

Ass for the tweeters i put mine in the doors at that little triange near the door mirrors.

BIG difference to sound from the stockies!

sound great with the columbus.

I've just spent the weekend swapping out the door speakers in my VRS. As above you will need adapters to go in the doors so you can fit after market speakers. I used

Autoleads Speaker Adaptors for VW Golf - SAK-3108 for the front doors

Autoleads Speaker Adaptors for VW Golf - SAK3101 for the rears

Originally I added a line driver and a 4 channel amp to my factory setup and the improvment from the standard Columbus has been immense. The factory fit speakers are actually very capable. The standard tweeters are a bit kack but hey ho.

I have now replaced the front 6.5's and rear 5.25's with 6.5" Infinity Kappa Compnonents all round. The Tweeters are easy to replace as the new ones fitted the existing holes, just needed to be glued in place carefully. The biggest issue was mounting the crossovers as they are huge.

Now I have all this done the sound quality is really impressive and I am able to run the doors much louder and clearer than the originals. However the biggest improvement came from adding the amp in the first place. I only ran the amp with the original speakers for about 2 weeks though, so there is a high probabilty I would have killed them before long.

Surprised the factory speakers lasted 2 weeks with a proper amp :)

Did you cut inline to the existing speaker cables to wire it up or did you feed new wires from the amp to the doors?

I cheated. I ran speaker cable from the back of the Stereo to the line driver, through to the AMP, then back to car connector behind the stereo and used the original wiring all the way to the crossovers. From the Crossovers, I ran new wiring to the mids and and the tweeters.

I did it this was so everything could be put back to factory if I every need to and by using a Quad lock to ISO adapter ( http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_907135_langId_-1_categoryId_265855 ) I didn't have to hack into the existing wiring.

The biggest problem with this was trying to tidy away a full male / female quad lock and ISO block behind the stereo and dash. Managed to move the quadlock into the gap behind the climate controls.

I'd like to re-wire the car at some point but as I have a working system I probably won't bother (to much hassle )

Like you, I was quite amazed that the factory speakers held out. I actually pushed them quite hard as well. I'm sure they would tear themselves to pieces in a spectacular way if they did go. As said above though I think the tweeters really let the original kit down.

Quick guide here on how to replace speakers

Surprises me that people change the stock speakers on the Octavia, particularly with the factory 8 speaker system. I like my music and the stock system in my Blackline is great, really bassy, clear and only turns to mud if you turn it up way too loud.

Considering the Octavia isnt the quietest car either I find the system has absolutely no trouble drowning out wind and road noise. Id even suggest overall it sounds better than the system I had in my old MK6 Golf GT and that was v good too.

If you think the Octavias sound system isnt that great you should try a Fabia with the stock 8 speaker system, so little sound proofing in the doors and door cards made out of granite like plastic it sounds truely horrible. Flat, shrill, any hint of bass just vibrates the doors and door cards not nice at all!

If at some point I end up getting a MK3 RS I'll be tempted to order the Canton sound system but wouldnt go to the trouble of upgrading it myself; but each to their own particularly if you into ICE.

oem systems are getting quite good now. The setup in the Octavia is very good and has an odd speaker location but it works well and makes the front and rear mids almost work as one.

The setup in my works caddy is even bassier and louder than the one in my octavia

Over the last two days I've upgraded my front and rear door speakers in my 09 ltd edition octy.

As the passenger door speaker was vibrating and distorted

Replaced them with clarion speakers .My 80s music has never sounded as good

Sorry for pointless post just wanted to tell someone

Really really happy with my standard Bolero set up to be fair. For a standard sound system it's powerful enough to send the thump of the bass through the seats! :)

I don't think I need to upgrade anything apart from maybe the columbus sat nav at a later date. I'm yet to hear a better sounding OEM system so I don't feel like I'm missing out!

I do see your point! I think I get scared off because of the whole creating your own speaker mounts etc...

 woops!

Were the Mk5 adaptors aftermarket or an oem part?

making your own speaker mounts is easy and cheap.

Get some 18mm mdf off cuts from the cutting saw at your local B&Q. Cut them to shape, drill holes to screw into the places where the rivets were (or use bolts) and pop the speaker on. Easy :)

Gonna have to sort my FL system out,its absolute pants and speakers give in over 50% volume pretty disappointed tbh.the speakers just crack or cut out with or without bass.fancying fitting some nice misters in the doors and maybe wiring up a sub and amp in the boot.

think running new speakerwire is also a must. lol

sounds like a midlife crisis is kicking in,especailly when i get in a company golf or audi and the standard systems mint..even though the golfs got the same headunit grrrrrrrrrr

anybody know what the standard columbus wattage is ?

I have to agree with a lot of people here. The 8 speakers in my VRS are pretty amazing for a standard setup. Feels very bass heavy, mids and highs are also fantastic.

Maybe the older VRS or non VRS are a bit pants?

anybody know what the standard columbus wattage is ?

it will be very low. 10 watts per channel maybe

I'm quite happy with my OEM ones too. Great sounds :)

Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk.

Think all the 4 channel VAG HU's output 4 x 20w RMS. My car has Amundsen + and stock 8 speakers and bar some minor door trim vibrations in the rear sounds v good for stock and i love my music.

Is even go as far to say that on the whole sounds better than the stock system in my old 59 plate Golf GT.

If you think the standard FL Octavia system is bad you wanna roll around in a MK2 FL Fabia, had a vRS and the stereo was one of the reasons I sold it.
