3 yers on, time to look for an extended warranty - advices / claims experience?

It doesn't seem like three years since SM #2 came to live with us, but as we plan to hang onto this one, thoughts turn to extended warranties.

I've done some basic checking and had quotes from Skoda themselves, Warranty Direct, Warrantywise and CLick4Warranty. I've tried to get like for like (car has 30k on the cliock now; assuming <15k a year; fsh at main dealer; comphrensive cover); zero or minimum excess.

I'm surprised at the price difference. Skoda Extended Warranty (£241.78); Warranty Direct (£299); Warrantywise (£435)!; Click4Warranty (£278.66)

I know the devil is in the detail and it is what happens when you need to claim that makes the difference.

My questions to the forum:

  1. Have I missed off any good provider from my research
  2. Any practical experience of claims (good or bad)
  3. Gotchas

Thanks

A search will help. Loads and loads of references to this.  Including my own contributions saying I went for the CSMA / Car Care Plan product at £171 p.a.  (or £17.10p . p.m. for 10 months). It's cheaper for my car as it's under 1200cc and it's under five yrs. old.

Won't repeat everything here as it's all been said before but The CSMA was the best for me (just renewed again).  Next year my car will be over five yrs. old and the price will rise and the exclusions will increase so I don't know whether I'll continue with extended warranty.

When renewal time comes I'm always reminded that if I'd bought a Toyota, Hyundai or Kia I wouldn't be considering the matter. But not everyone wants one of the aforementioned I suppose.

I looked into this when mine got to three years old. I'm perhaps less conservative as I went without, figuring I could save the premium and, if necessary, put it towards anything that might happen. This, along with some DIY ability and non-FWS specialists, plus a hope that nothing actually will happen.

The exclusion that put me off going for an extended warrenty - was "cost of diagnosis". A recent problem , just outside warranty, with door locking cost me more for the labour involved in diagnosis than the repair labour cost !

Agreed, that's irritating.  Can't remember if that applies to claims within the standard three year warranty or just the extended warranties. I've enquired about it in the dim a nd distant past past and don't recall getting a straight answer as to when it does and doesn't apply.

I only pay what I do for some sort of reassurance that if the entire engine blew up it might help in some way...it was £145 last year and this year's £171 isn't too terrible for some sort of peace of mind - but, as mentioned in earlier posts, I do know the DSG clutch pack is specifically excluded because of it being subject to a TSB and was replaced within the three year warranty and Car Care Plan are aware of it and placed the exclusion upon it.

When ordering a new Yeti today, the 2yrs extended warranty is £630 (list price). Is the product you buy at 3yrs different?

The 3 year product is really 'insurance' badged as a warranty. I'm not certain, but I think the extended warranty is genuinely that (albeit not as comprehensive as the first 3 years). Although I've never had a Skoda insured warranty, my experience of these from other makes is that they do make sense as claiming is far more straightforward. If the issue isn't obvious, the diagnosis charge does seem odd though if it isn't refunded when the fault is identified. Insured warranties normally tie you to dealer servicing which can be an issue for some (the EU ruling about service outside the dealer network and warranties doesn't apply, because it's not a warranty).
