Heater/Air con failure

4 wheel driver

Recommended Posts

I have owned my '59 plate 170 diesel, Elegance spec. Yeti from new and have covered circa 40k. The a/c and heater have stopped working properly.

First to fail was passenger side heater which would only blow cold unless on max when it does blows warm. After a month or two the same thing has happened to driver's side.

A/c is not as colds as it used to be either.  The fan and outlets all work normally.  Never been re-gassed.  Anybody had similar symptoms?  Are the two systems linked or seperate?

Thanks for any helpful replies.

Thanks to those who replied to my questions.  I must admit to being surprised that the issues attracted so few responses.  I anticipated a lot of reaction because I thought that many other owners would have experienced  similar problems.

Maybe it' not a common problem for heaters to fail which of course is good news for other owners... it would be selfish of me to hope others were similarly afflicted and that although that might have generated more feedback it wouldn't make my problem go away.

I will visit Kwik Fit to get the A/C re-gassed although I assume this is independent of the heater plumbing so won't result in heat coming from the vents.

Thanks again.

Not being funny but you probably didn't get many responses because most of us tend to have the AC serviced/re-gassed at the appropriate time!

Have you checked the system for fault codes? A scan with VCDS would tell you whether the system was low on refrigerant (unlikely to be the issue however as lack of refrigerant would account for the system not cooling correctly, but wouldn't account for the system only blowing warm when on max) or if there were any other related fault codes. If you don't have VCDS then I do, and I'm also in the North East.

Thanks for your offer. I live in darlington. not sure about the protocols for contact /whether this reply is private etc. how do we contact each other directly?

Thanks

Oh, and kwik fit? I wouldn't...

I hate to say this, but Kwikfart seem to do quite a good job with air con, mainly because all they do is connect a machine up and press the button. The machine does all the work and produces a print-out.

They have little or no comprehension of what takes place when the button is pressed, other than their job is complete. If something flags up as a fault, or if the system still doesn't work correctly once the machine has regassed an already fully pressured system, then they have no idea what to do next. Their only guarantee is that if they can't improve the coolest vent temperature by 10% then they give you your money back. That's not any guarantee I would accept.

aside from the air con, it could be the thermocouple which controls the gates on the heater/blower distribution system, my first yeti(late 2010) had a similar problem early on and was cured by replacing the thermocouple or gate mech, can't quite remember as it was done under warranty

Update... Took Rustynuts up on his offer and visited him Friday evening to VCDS my car to see if Fault Codes revealed anything re- the strange behaviour of my Heater/ AC.

Nothing came up.  Compared my AC coldness with his and mine was noticeably colder so probably only needs re-gas which I will do.

Heater malfunction remains a mystery so will raise with the garage when the AC gets done.

Thanks again Rusty.
