  1. I think at that price the shifter is essentially disposable and replacement is the most sensible option. I have taken shifters apart before now but unless you can actually buy spare parts then if something is broken or worn then you will have to replace anyway. I've worked on a bit of SRAM stuff and their high end stuff is pretty good, but at the lower end the quality just isn't as good as comparable price/range Shimano. Use the SRAM until it dies but when you come to replace I would go Shimano. The new 6100 Deore takes some beating on both value and performance.
  2. I tow an 8' body twin axle box trailer a lot with mine and I don't notice any real difference engine oil temp wise other than on a long drag climb on an A road for example, but the increase might be 5°c. The water temp seems to sit at 90°c regardless. Mines DSG and works fine. It does have the factory towbar though. My dad has done tens of thousands of miles towing caravans around Europe with various 'trad' auto boxes with zero issues. The only thing we have always done to his vehicles is fit a Kenlowe oil cooler rad into the gearbox oil cooling loop on each of them. His current Mondeo is DSG and has also do thousands of towing miles with zero issues and no extra cooler as there isn't really anything to cool.
  3. Decent spec Superb estate with a DSG box would be my thought. I'd go petrol if lots of short journeys. The 1.5tsi DSG in our Karoq is a pretty impressive unit and I think it'd move a Superb along plenty well enough. There are always the 2.0tsi 190, 220, 272 or 280ps options if you want/need a bit more oomph.
  4. Alcantara is way nicer than leather IMHO. Dark headliner is a non-issue, with colour strips on the door and dash, and low level lighting in the footwells it is plenty light enough.
  5. Its a disease..... 15 bikes in the family and with bike shops as busy as they are I seem to have become the 'friends and family' mechanic too... Currently in the workshop I have a friends daughter's Marlin 5 for a full service and 'do what I can' with the Suntour boingy forks, a 24" wheel BSO to get as functional as I can for another friends child, my gravel bike for some different bars 'cause the 25° flare bars are just not for me, and my best bike in for a bit of a fettle before LEJOG. That lot should keep me busy. Biggest issue with all of it is getting the parts, luckily I have a limited stock of common wear items that I built up. Still riding 100+ miles a week in prep for LEJOG too. Beginning to wonder if its gone beyond hobby into 'obsession' territory :-)
  6. I mostly use sport mode when I am towing to get up to speed :-) I guess that makes me an old fart.
  7. So all the summers have now started? if so, then I wish someone had told the blasted rain Gods :-)
  8. 2 Sundays ago, 38 miles in 26°c of humid heat. Yesterday, 40 miles in 17°c and misty. Today, 30 miles in 13°c and pouring rain. Can someone just confirm Summer has just started? 'cause the weather appears to be getting worse!
  9. Any of those engines would be fine and I doubt they'd feel underpowered. Front wheel drive cars will often wheelspin in the right situation, but I doubt in normal use it would make much difference. I've never managed to unstick my 280 and it does go quite well, but I am the first to admit its not in any way necessary.
  10. My kids are 10 and 13, and its sometimes a struggle with a Superb estate! had to resort to a box trailer for holidays.
  11. Best 30 mile average speed for a while yesterday, and done on my heavier winter bike with mudguards etc. Really must get the 'good' bike out at some point, just not sure I trust the weather (yet).
  12. Years ago a lady in a 3 series BMW coupe overtook me, stopped and threw her door open to get out. I smashed into it, writing off my frame and forks and smashing my helmet to pieces. Got pretty banged up in all honesty. Luckily she was reasonable and settled all my expenses and replaced the broken bike. She did claim she 'didn't see me' despite me being 6' and wearing a bright pink jersey. Funniest bit of it all is while I was sat with the ambulance people getting patched up, I watched her try to get her door back in the hole it came from, with little success :-)
  13. mine is an older Superb and not IV, but does have the towbar. I didn't get a 13-7 adapter with mine.
  14. Oh no, deffo not. I'm doing Ride across Britain in September, these were two consecutive road days as training rides to re-assure myself I could The actual event is 980 miles over 9 consecutive days which is going to be a big ask...
  15. its been a long couple of days....
  16. My mate rides a Kona HT and he's really pleased with it - his is a 130mm 29er with a dropper so not that exact model.
  17. Superb is probably more refined than Octavia. The 2.0 engine is mature tech now and should be fine. Its used in masses of VAG products. Personally I'd go for a 2.0 Superb estate as a good replacement for the BMW. I test drove a 220 and a 280 when I bought mine - the 220 was more than enough power, the only small niggle was it seemed prone to wheelspin. That'd probably only be an issue until you got used to driving the car. I ended up eliminating the issue by going for the 280 as its 4x4, but that isn't at all necessary. The caveat is I only do 6k miles a year and I tow a box trailer or have bikes on board for probably 1k miles of that, so I don't care about MPG and do care about oompf :-)
  18. define 'close' :-) another 20 years and 6000 brackets or so.....
  19. I've had one tone fail on the twin tones in our 69 plate Karoq and on our 'old' 66 plate Yeti both tones eventually failed at not quite 3 years - its a common failure on them. Golfs apparently suffer similarly. Its worth checking if your Kamiq was only fitted with one tone, or was fitted with two and one has failed, because it can happen pretty quickly. On both the Yeti and the Karoq the horns were mounted low on the front chassis rails behind the bumper, one tone per side. The Yeti I replaced myself without removing the bumper, although it did need a bit of wiggling. The Karoq was done under warranty.
  20. Make sure your boot lid doesn't now touch the protector - adjust the stops at the side if it does. Skoda fitted an original Skoda protector to mine from new and forgot to do the adjustment which resulted in paint chips and rust spots after 6 months. In fairness they did repair it at no cost and I had already adjusted the stops, but something to watch for.
  21. I've had my superb 3 years now. Mine is an estate. I am a Scout leader, walker and cyclist and I've used mine all over Dartmoor, in Wales, the Peaks and Lakes. I regularly put 4 bikes on a towbar rack on it, and these days I tow an 8x5x6ft twin axle box trailer with it for big trips. Never had an issue down country lanes etc in that time. Reversing with the trailer is interesting but that's my problem not yours :-) You can get a couple of bikes inside with the seats down. I have quite tall children and the leg room is excellent in the back, which dependant on how long you keep cars might matter. Mine does have sensors and a camera, and they are nice to have, but I drove a similar length Vectra estate for 15 years with no issues and no sensors. You get used to it. It is wide but compared to e.g. my Vectra, the mirrors are pretty tight in so its not too much of an issue. I will admit if I am going to the supermarket I will take t'missus's Karoq if I have a choice but the Superb is useable, you just have to pick your space a bit more carefully. I really like my Superb. Its the best car I've ever owned and if I had to replace it today I'd get another one in a heartbeat.
  22. I've had my Sportline (pre-plus) for nearly 3 years now. My experience: Spare wheel. Get one. I had a puncture fully laden on the M1 that no foam would have fixed and it got me out of dodge. I wouldn't own a car without one now. Not everywhere has the 19" tyres in stock so don't think you will always be able to pick up a new tyre easily. USB sounds brilliant for a dashcam, I couldn't have it in 2018 but I would have done for sure. Tow bar. Get the OE one for sure, so much better than any aftermarket one, drops down out of the bumper and its so easy to store away that you actually do do it! Its really excellent and actually not much more than an aftermarket one if you get a proper coded one etc. Camera. We paid extra for one and its brilliant. Especially with the tow bar, it makes reversing up to and under a hitch so easy and there is no way you'll do that with sensors. I tow a couple of big trailers that are hard to drag around so getting the hitch perfectly in place is lovely. Love our heated screen. You could live without but I wouldn't if you can afford it.
  23. I test drove a 220 and it was pretty spinny on starting acceleration, especially if turning at the same time. I suspected that would be the case given my experience with my previous 180ps FWD car. It wasn't terrible and I suspect you would adapt your driving style to cope. I solved the issue by going for the 4x4 option which I have never managed to unstick, but I will admit that it is overkill.
  24. What model is it? Spec varies massively with model and year. That said, even the 'lower' models have a lot of kit on them. Things I like on mine are the reverse camera and heated windscreen, but neither are deal breakers.
  25. Mine are similar. My plan is that at first damage post-warranty expiry, I will get them all refinished in the grey colour without the diamond cut.
