  1. I dread new windscreens, had three replaced over the years and none of them where like the original. Poor optics, wind noise and so on. My wife's car took a nasty stone chip which quickly spread a few feet across the screen. Covered by the insurance so arranged fitting of a new screen. Having spoken to a window fitter who advised me that spurious glass can have fitment issues, they are cheaply made, and as he put it, 99% of customers don't know or don't care. He advised to specifically request OEM glass, which in this case cost about 5 x the cost of spurious, which I did. This took a couple of weeks to arrive and was just fitted today. The chap was very efficient, all done in an hour and I watched him like a hawk! Very neat, clean and efficient. It has to set for an hour, I will give it a bit longer than that. Fingers crossed.
  2. Is the new sensor working?
  3. I don't have a code reader, does that matter? Will the new sensor work?
  4. Mine is also not working, elected not to get it fixed last time it was at the main dealer, seems a bit of a week spot. Any idea on the replacement procedure?
  5. Just keep in mind bigger means for poorer ride comfort and more road noise. Personally I feel it's 17s are the sweet spot between looks and practicality. And the car doesn't look under wheeled with them either.
  6. I owned a diesel F10 5 series before switching to the Superb and rate the Superb higher in most areas, particularly space, practicality, reliability and refinement. The G30 that you are looking at is a much finer package than the F10, and having driven one recently came away very impressed. It was a high mileage car that felt almost like new. In a Superb with similar mileage there would be rattles and it would feel it's age much more. For a diesel it was remarkably refined. The sound sound system in the BMW is really rubbish though. BMW are notorious for having really crappy audio and even the upgraded Harman-kardon is pretty average. The lack of folding rear seats as standard as well just wrecks my head and would be a deal breaker for me. If I was given a choice between the two for similar money on a PCP it would be very hard to overlook the BMW. You have an interesting decision to make!
  7. I owned a 2011 b7 petrol Passat. Also in 17" rims. Really not much in it, maybe marginally quieter on road noise, but a bit more engine noise from the older 1.4 120bhp TSI. Very little in it. It seems that the larger rims on the Superb really highlight the issue. A Superb on 17's is a very serene place to be.
  8. It dries hard like a polystyrene. It can easily be cut and sanded to shape once set. It's also horrible to work with, incredibly sticky and will stain pretty much whatever it touches.
  9. I was tempted to inject expanding foam into the sills to stop sound travelling along them. I was concerned though that I might be interfering with cables or water drainage. If you are thinking of using it, I would inject it into a plastic bag placed in the area. This means it won't actually stick to the car and you have a chance of removing it if required. I would say it would make a very effective sound killer. Another consideration, though very unlikely, is if the car ever needed body work in the affected area the expanding foam could make the repair more difficult.
  10. So many variables I doubt you'll get a meaningful result unfortunately. I just tried 2 Android apps at ambient room sound and there was a 10 decibel difference between them!
  11. Is that App on Android, I don't see it in the Play store?
  12. Yup, north Wicklow. I have 17 s with 68 decibel tyres, 215 55 R17, car is very quiet on nearly all surfaces. Will be interesting to see if your exterior wheel arch insulation helps.
  13. What wheel size do you have and what tyres are on them?
  14. Really important to fill the voids where the B pillar meets the cill with closed cell foam. We have two Superbs in the family and my wife's has the noticeably more noise at ear level than mine after sound proofing.
  15. This is what I did with mine.
  16. My advice would be to buy quiet tyres first. This will improve things far more than just adding sound deadening. Then if you want to further I found the biggest gains are found in this order: B pillar Boot floor Under rear seat Wheel arches I've also done the following but not convinced I got any benefit: Under bonnet Inside rear hatch (then had to remove some as it was too heavy) Doors are also tricky to dismantle and gains are questionable. Good luck, it's an enjoyable process, but really, tyres first.
  17. I'm looking to get roof bars for a roof box but need the ones that attach to the roof holes inside the doors. (Hatch with no roof rails). Does any have experience of these? Do Skoda sell them? The last thing I want to do is damage the door trims or mark the paintwork, I'm assuming these systems don't do that? TIA.
  18. No camera there, just the rain sensor so should be ok. Will keep an eye on them when they are doing the work though.
  19. Nasty crack today, before calling repair company are there any window trims, clips that need replacing at the same time? Has a few bad experiences getting glass replaced in the past.
  20. Also thinking of getting those Goodyear's as the reviews say they are very quiet. Good to hear this is backed up by your experience.
  21. ^ Man after my own heart, great job. It bugs me too. Did you peel back the window rubbers and what does it look like with the door open?
  22. Cheers Colin, tyre wear is even and rear tyres are a mid range so not junk. There is not much life left in them so may change them first and see if it helps. But good suggestions regarding alignment.
  23. This is a bit of a weird one. At motorway speeds I get a mild resonance through the car, comes and goes in about 3 second intervals. 3 seconds resonance, 3 seconds smooth. Felt more through the seat than the steering wheel. Feels like a mildly out of balance rear wheel, except for the fact that fades in and out and is not continuous. Any ideas?
