Free software check
I've had nowt. I guess the obvious questions are "What's in it for you?" and "What's in it for the dealer?". I suspect the answer to the first question is, an invoice somewhere down the line.

Odd button
It's a bit unkind to ask forum members to give you "any ideas", then dismiss an idea as an unrequested opinion. You might not like @carefree's idea of getting rid of the switch, but you did ask. My idea is to go back to the dealer, complain that the switch doesn't work, and see what they say.

Washer Adjustment
Years ago, washer jets we little metal balls in a mounting, with a hole drilled through them through which water squirted. A bit like the ball on a ball-point pen. To adjust them, you stuck a pin in the jet hole and this showed you where the jet was presently aligned, and allowed you to lever the ball in its mounting to a different position. I don't know if they're fancier than that these days, but that was how we used to do it, back in the day. Of course, you can go all fancy and get a tool to do it, but a pin works fine.

skoda superb shuddering on take off
That member has only posted 20 times in the last 9 years. He last visited Briskoda over 3 years ago. A salute your optimism, but don't hold your breath waiting for an answer from him. That said, if you have a similar problem, do start a new thread about it, hopefully someone on here will be able to help. Probably not maacushla, though.

EA888 Gen3B - Tuning options for the 2.0 190PS TSI
It turned out to be the change in the response to the throttle in "Sport Mode". I get more gas for a throttle demand, which was catching me out. As I expected, I got used to it.

TSI Stage 1 remap and DSG torque
I have the 2.0 TSI 190ps SE L and that has the DQ381. I've had it remapped to about 230ps so obviously have had no issues at all with the gearbox handling the power. So long as the DSG is okay before the remap, you shouldn't have any issues with a stage one. I had some tweaks done to my DSG programming as part of my remap, so it might be worth asking your tuner about whether that would be appropriate for your needs. I did create a thread about my remapping, which is tailored for my car, but does have some useful links in it. Good luck!

TSI Stage 1 remap and DSG torque
There are a whole load of variants of DSG, if you get a vin decode of the vehicle, you can see what type of gearbox you've got. The wet-clutch 6&7-speed boxes are great. Have a search on Briskoda and you can read accounts of people who've had manual gearbox clutch issues after a remap. That said, you can always put a beefier clutch in, so it doesn't have to be a deal-breaker.

Trust your gut feeling when buying cars. Is the car particularly cheap, cheap enough that repair costs will still leave you ahead? If not, if you have doubts, I suggest you walk away. (But I am particularly fussy when buying a car, and it took me about 2 years to finally find a car I was happy with, so I'm a bit of an outlier. This is because I keep my cars for a long time.)

Assuming that's not steam under pressure escaping, how hot is the steam? I ask that, because I'm wondering if you've had a look under the bonnet while this is happening?

I think it's worth contacting Skoda customer service. It sounds to me like you've been given the standard "Tell him to go away and see if he goes away." brush off. It might also be worth contacting another Skoda dealer to get a 2nd opinion. Indicate you're not happy with the response your dealer has given, and they might offer to help you out with a view to getting future custom from you. Good luck!

Right, a conclusion to the story. I complained to Autoglass and told them that unless they sorted out both the broken window and the damage they had caused, I would be making an insurance claim against them to get the problem fixed. Autoglass seem to have a very good complaints department, and they kicked into action and, after a minor hiccup where they planned to come out and replace the window without having the window seals, I finally had a guy come out and replace the window seals and the window itself. The window seals come in two parts (not 3, IIRC) and one includes the small pane of glass at the rear of the door. It's worth noting that there are metal inserts in the door glass rubber seals which can easily be damaged, so they require handling with a little care as they can be deformed or broken pretty easily if you're rough with them. Also worth noting is that the interlocking of the window seals is a bit complicated where they meet with each other, and the Autoglass tech (a master tech, no less) didn't interlock them properly, but it was easy enough to sort that out by comparing them with the other side. (Which is how I noticed they weren't fitted correctly in the first place.) So eventually Autoglass did a good job and all is now well with the car. Over the course of the three visits I had from Autoglass fitters, between us we managed to get pretty much all the broken glass out from inside the door, and if there's any still in there, it doesn't make its presence known. All the Autoglass people were friendly and polite, but the guy who caused the damage was a bit careless/clumsy/simian in his work. Autoglass also agreed to waive my excess, which I was pretty pleased about as it's a spicy £95. So that's that, then.

Do you recall what the VAG mechanic told you were the most common big-bill failures that VAG vehicles suffer from, @marcusthehat? I'm curious to see whether what your mechanic reported is reflected on the boards of Briskoda.

Winter tyres - front wheels only?
Not so different. When the weather got cold in Autumn, I bunged my winter tyres on. When the weather warmed up in Spring, I put the normal tyres back on. I didn't just use them for snow, I used them in case of snow, but also they do perform better at low temperatures.

I used a pair of winter tyres in winter, mainly as I couldn't justify the cost & storage space of having 4. (On my previous car) I used them on my drive wheels, as I figured for me, the whole point of winter tyres was to ensure I didn't get stuck. They worked just fine, because I drive carefully in the snow, and that's only if I have to drive in the snow at all. I say to keep looking for tyre suppliers that will supply what you want.

Well, Autoglass came out again today. They brought the wrong glass again today. One new thing they did today was slice through my window rubber, so that will need replacing. By repeatedly fitting/removing/re-fitting the crudely-cut and sharp-edged temporary perspex, they've made a mess of most of the rubbers around the window. I can't say I'm impressed with Autoglass so far, if this is representative of the level of service they provide.

2018 Octavia VRS (245) vs 2017 IS300H
My car is pretty lousy for MPG doing short runs, and it's the Gen3B engine, which is the economy version of the 2.0L EA888. If you're doing slow stop/start traffic and short runs, sub-30 mpg is a real possibility. It's easy enough to check on a test drive. It'll much better than that on a run, though. It's going to depend who does it. Here's an example of someone offering the service for about £350. https://www.awesomegti.com/intake-clean-carbon-clean/ I don't know how often it would need doing. I think it depends on the type of driving you do. But over the lifetime of the car, it's very likely to need doing at least once. I haven't noticed carbonisation issues mentioned much on Brisky, but then I haven't been looking for it.
