So it is possible that the licence for the data would be held by the map provider. The code for access would be held by the system, If the car was set up with a system using only one of the providers it would cease to function when the provider stopped. I have also read on forums if they get an old map card (for an sd card system unit) the system starts working again. that suggests that newer cards had the code removed. Also that on downloadable update systems that the feature disappeared after an update of map. These also suggest the map provider paid? The information is still broadcast on TMC on FM
