Don't know if it's still true or not, but most of the Supermarkets used to buy their fuel in bulk on the open-market from the cheapest source available at the time. Therefore, there was no telling what's going into your tank - one week it could be a high quality 'branded' fuel such as Shell or BP, the next some generic unbranded stuff that only just meets the minimum BS standards.

I get round this problem by having 2 alarm clocks. The one next to my bed goes off at 4:40am (yes, twenty to five), the other is on the other side of the room and goes off 10mins later. Even then, there have been occasions when I've got out of bed, turned the second alarm off, then got straight back into bed and gone back to sleep

What makes you think it's got a diesel engine? Everything I've read so far about the evo IX says it's just an evolution (no pun intended) of the evo VIII.

99.9% sure it's the 8v 115hp engine.

Whens the right time to stop modifying your car?
Puddenchucker replied to HellFire's topic in Skoda Fabia Mk I (1999-2007)
If someone wearing a track-suit and a Burberry cap comes along and says "wicked, nice motor mate,' then you've gone too far -
You should have got a free 'sampler' pack consisting of a two small bottles, one of green shampoo and one of yellow 'paint sealant cream.' You're meant to use the yellow stuff if the shine starts to fade or water stops beading on the paintwork, just as you would a regular polish or wax. I've had Supagard on my car for over a year and haven't had to use the yellow stuff yet.

This section on the VW website seems to suggest that any VW that is capable of being on variable servicing leaves the factory with 'regular' fully synthetic longlife oil (they repeatedly mention Castrol SLX Longlife II). VW Longlife service

Oil advice and recommendations here!!
Puddenchucker replied to oilman's topic in Handy Topics & Guides
What (in simple terms) is the difference between an oil rated as ACEA A1 and one rated ACEA A3, assuming they are both the same viscosity & type? And what would happen if you were to put an ACEA A1 rated oil in an engine that required ACEA A3? Thanks Pud -
No. It's a known scientific fact that washing a car on a sunny day is a catalyst for promoting the accumulation of rain clouds, leading to heavy rain, thunder storms and flash flooding  It is also know to upset local wildlife, by inducing diarrhoea in birds.

I've got a 2.0 Elegance on a 51 plate, and it hasn't got ASR or EDL either. I think ASR & EDL have only been standard on the 1.8T and 1.9TDS versions, I don't think these have ever been available on the 2.0. But, I'm sure someone with more info then me will be along shortly to confirm or correct

Oil advice and recommendations here!!
Puddenchucker replied to oilman's topic in Handy Topics & Guides
Oilman, This is a general question about the W viscosity of oil at cold temps. I'm currently in an argument with someone who claims that a OW-30 oil (specifically Castrol SLX) is 'too thin when starting from cold.' Now I know this is rubbish, as the oil will be much thinner (lower viscosity) at normal engine operating temp of approx 90C. And, that one of the major advantages of 0W oils is that they are thin (relatively speaking) to quickly and easily flow around the engine when starting from cold, thus providing better lubrication than a thicker oil. With this in mind do you have any data on the viscosities of the following grades of oils at 0C? 0W-30 Full Synthetic 5W-30 Semi Synthetic 10W-30 Mineral The only data I can find on the internet is for 40C & 100C. Thanks Pud -

I'm not defending Norton, because it is a pile of poo and would completely trash itself about every third time I tried to update virus definitions and has long since been consigned to the software skip. But, how do you know that the virus wasn't already present on your system before you installed Norton?

Wheelspin in 3rd from standing start...
Puddenchucker replied to Goodas's topic in Skoda Fabia Mk I (1999-2007)
Surely, if you're getting excessive wheelspin, you're actually not going anywhere near as fast as the speedo is reading? -
Never used it myself, but from what I've read about it, it's OK provided it doesn't rain/sleet/snow during the night 'cause it gets washed off.
