  1. The drivetrain losses in some 4WD cars is quite significant in many cases. However, my understanding is that the S3 in standard form compares very well to the claimed power figures although I suspect that many dynos would need to pull the haldex fuse and effectively have a 2WD car. I re-found the following website after a rolling-start straight line race with an Audi S5 where he struggled to gain on me (not saying that I was gaining any distance on him either, mind!) and thinking 'OK, what just happened there?'. This website looks at drivetrain losses.... compare, for example, the S3 to the RS4! http://www.rri.se/ Also, have a look at the Suburu WRX STI or the newer BMW M3 for interest. A few months back I had to think about a new S3 with remap but little else due to limited funds versus a new TSI VRS for which I would spend a chunk of money on modifications, most notably a K04 conversion, and save a few grand from going the VRS route. The 4WD is without doubt a big advantage when ragging it off from a standing start or when 'pushing it' in the wet. However, the big question for me was - how often do I drive a car like that on a public road (as I don't track it) or want to drive it like that?...and then balance that up with the size and convenience of the Octavia. For me, it was the Octavia that I went for but it's all personal choice. At my age, I am happy to leave the 'traffic light drag-racing' to our Saxo driving friends and, as for the earlier mention of getting the same performance in the wet as in the dry with a 4WD car, I wish you the best of luck!
  2. Another vote for Pagid and the silver coating on them that gets swept off where the pads contact the disc. Avoid Black Diamond discs - the rust was showing through the coating after 1 week. I removed them after 1 month!!! A very expensive mistake. I took pictures meaning to moan about this but never got around to it. I may dig them out.
  3. That is correct - the Pipewerx is 3" all the way through to the end where it reduces to 2.5". This is part of the pipe rather than a separate reducing piece if that makes sense. The Piper cat-back is 2.5" so they just slot together. If a different sized cat-back is used, the 2.5" part of the Pipewerx will need to be chopped off and a joining pipe used. Hope that makes sense. My feeling is that a standard cat-back will inhibit the flow to some extent on a K04 but not much - it may knock a few horses off but if you can get a hold of one cheaply it is worth a shot to see what happens with a before and after dyno run. It will be a simple fit on to the Pipwerx DP. Alternatively, BCS to a version of their cat-back with an extra silencer to keep things quiet but it is a 3" pipe so should not have much restriction at all.
  4. And it may squeeze a bit more out as the turbo and engine loosen up.
  5. Thanks Clive and no problem - I fully understand and hope the new tuning business is going well. Sko-with-go visited me yesterday to see the car so I am hoping that my dream of selling it in its current form to a Brisky member will come true
  6. Yeah, I have been jumping from one car to the other this week. I am going to have to take you out in the TSI when we next meet to get the point across but the power delivery and the torque make for a great car on the road. I can't take anything away from the TFSI, I still love it but the TSI has a tad more power which, more importantly, it puts down on the road efficiently and with a little less 'drama' than the TFSI. I will try and get more pictures up tonight
  7. I did exactly the same thing a few weeks ago for a new FL VRS and it works a treat. Do you have access to VCDS to activate the telephone option?
  8. I won't let anyone other than JKM in Portsmouth near my car
  9. I was getting my new car remapped from stock to K04 a few weeks ago and we ran in to some problems on the diagnostics where the car was pulling too much timing and a bad batch of fuel was suspected. I used Momentum 99 and VPower so had to go back to my bank statement to confirm that I had filled up with VPower on that occasion. The tank was run down and then filled up with more VPower and all was well. In short, remapped cars most definitely need higher octane fuel but this looked like quite strong evidence of a bad batch of VPower. I have also felt my older TFSI K04 car struggle on more than one occasion with what I can only believe was a bad batch of Momentum as the next tank load put things back to normal.
  10. Absolutely...and if one is cheaper than the other, then tell the other as its all negotiable. Curiously Brentacre were the most expensive for me by a looooong way.
  11. Hello again, Martin I currently use Sky insurance who broker for Chaucer and specialise in modified cars. They would certainly be worth asking as they should have the car and all the modifications on their system. They have given me the best quotes and we must be a very similar profile in terms of driver.
  12. Good to hear from you again, Sy! I managed to get a little more opportunity to put it through its paces yesterday and it is truly awesome. I know saying this can sometimes get a groan in response but the numbers almost do not do justice to how the car feels on the road. :p I have got some interest in the TFSI so not sure if it will be around in 6 months. Either way, I hope that some lucky person can pick that car up in its current form - it would break my heart to take it back to standard. I keep getting questions on why I did not hang on to it and I don't really have an answer.
  13. TBH that is exactly what was going on! It's back now and I can't believe just how good it feels on the road. I am also delighted with how the TSI delivers the power and how the suspension, WALK, Quaife are coming together to get the power on to the road (rather than excessive wheel hopping or wheel spinning). I'll get some pics up later
  14. The car is coming back tomorrow. There was a little bit of a delay while everything was tweaked until JKM were happy with everything. I have to say that JKM have been nothing short of fantastic...there were minor hurdles but I only knew about them after the solution had already been found and applied!
  15. I'm not 100% but think that the OEM flywheel can be either LUK or Sachs
  16. That's all that I did but later added a 2 ft torque wrench to my standard Halfords kit and that was enough leverage to get them on and off no problem. I have reused the caliper bolts a number of times without problem but will replace the next time as they are cheap.
  17. I didn't know until I read this. I have always been a big Deep Purple and Raibow fan for as long as I can remember. RIP
  18. Payment sent, Cliff. (Unique Transaction ID57T488186B364272X)
  19. Again, thank you for your thoughts and kind words UPDATE: The car is on the road but still with JKM while Jim works out if I was unlucky to have a duff batch of petrol in there as it is pulling a bit too much timing. There have also been some interesting success and a big fail..... Success: This was the use of Revo's own K04 turbo rather than APR's. It is much the same in that a machining solution is applied to the standard Borg Warner K04 turbo. Partial success: The Blueflame turbo-back exhaust was not a good fir in places requiring slight repositioning of the odd mount. The second partial success were my Ronal R41 black 5-spoke alloys; when I test fitted to my current TFSI it was tight but looked like there would be a couple of mm clearance over the NQS BBK . However, there was a mm or less when properly bolted on to the TSI. Jim at JKM went to a nearby machine shop and managed to get something that would space the calipers away a little bit and hopefully give enough clearance without the need for spacers....I love these guys! Fail: The Airtec intercooler (Twintercooler look-alike) was a terrible fit. The silicone hoses were completely the wrong geometry to connect-up without forcing changes in shape that would put a lot of stress on the mounting points. I thought the core looked OK but some questions were raised about that too. It had to be 'canned' in favour of the trusted S3 intercooler. I hope I can get my money back or its £430 up the creek. Should have the car back soon!
  20. Naarghh! I think you'll see it before me, Ian!
