  1. silver1011's post in wind screen wipers was marked as the answer
Buy cheap buy twice as they say.
I've tried several brands over the years and there is only one decent one - Bosch.
  2. silver1011's post in Wheel Jack was marked as the answer
As above, I have both an Octavia and Superb on the drive, the jacks are the same.
  3. silver1011's post in Remapped diesels with black smoke? was marked as the answer
Accelerate hard in most non-DPF equipped diesels and they will smoke.

Add a remap to that and there will be more smoke.

If the car is high mileage or generally getting on a bit add more smoke.

If you have worn injector seals then add even more smoke.

My 2002 factory standard BMW 320d would leave a black soot trail on the tarmac if booted hard after a prolonged motorway cruise!

Here is a vRS with a DPF delete and stage one remap. Check out the soot on the rear bumper and tailgate...

Some cars are better / worse than others. Yours sounds normal to me.
  4. silver1011's post in Replaced the battery, now the cover doesn't fit was marked as the answer
    It should do.

The only reason Skoda changed to a fabric cover on the FL was to save cost, both in the cost of the plastic container and the battery itself (lower Ah and CCA).

I've recently measured the battery in my pre-FL to make sure the new one I just ordered would fit.

The biggest battery you can fit in the pre-FL plastic container is an 096...

    Length - 278mm
    Width - 175mm
    Height - 190mm.
  5. silver1011's post in car cover was marked as the answer
I tried one of these and it was a nightmare. The frost instead forms on the cover so removing it in the morning means it's stiff. Trying to fold/store it results in ice and snow all down your trousers.

Depending on where you dump it during the day means it is likely that by the time you come to place it back on the car in the evening it's still wet. The moisture ends up freezing so the cover clamps to the car and you still end up with frost on the glass.

The plastic hooks become brittle in the cold and break allowing the cover to flap about.

When you think it's going to be frosty overnight, but instead it rains or becomes windy then the cover just becomes a pain in the morning.

Any dirt on the car (likely this time of year) is ground into the paintwork by the sheet constantly rubbing over it during the night in even a slight breeze. The sheet then turns into a piece of high grit sandpaper.

I then experimented with a similar cover but one that just covers the windscreen, but it never fit properly as they are sold in small, medium or large, not bespoke for the various models. Tucking them into the doors or under the wipers isn't easy when trying to align it so that you get maximum coverage.

I gave up and reverted back to the 1 minute ritual of scraping the windscreen with the engine running.

I also made a mental note to ensure my next car has a heated windscreen.
  6. silver1011's post in lights help required was marked as the answer
Two very small blobs of blue-tack to cover them up.

Invisable to the eye and it can be easily removed for the next owner if required.

Not sure if Blue-tack is widely available outside the UK but I'm sure if not you'll have something similar in Oz!

  7. silver1011's post in auto lights was marked as the answer
A good example of why we shouldn't rely on Auto headlights.

There is still a requirement of the driver to recognise the need for lights and turn them on if they haven't turned themselves on.

This is why the older Skoda models (including the Superb) benefit from the green dipped headlight symbol right in your line of sight in the dash, so you can easily tell if your lights are on or not when it's not dark.

Later models (Yeti and MkIII Octavia) now don't have this light so you have to look down at the light switch instead. A backward step if you ask me.
  8. silver1011's post in Paint colour wrong was marked as the answer
Your Superb looks to be the same colour as mine, steel grey, also known as platinum grey.

Don't waste any more time and effort with Halfords. A genuine Skoda touch up pen is £16 inc. delivery off the internet, slightly less in a dealer, about £10.

You need part no: HFB 380 092 'Paint Platinum Grey'.

Here you go, this is Rainworth Skoda's eBay shop...

Slightly cheaper at another Skoda main dealer...

A little more information on the steel / platinum grey confusion, steel grey in the UK, platinum grey in mainland Europe, both the same colour...

  9. silver1011's post in Failed my MOT today - Bonnet wouldn't open! was marked as the answer
My dealer greases the bonnet latch and all door hinges during each service.

I think there may be some confusion here with the lever that protrudes out of the grill. This is only relevant for the MkI Superb and MkII Octavia.

The MkII Superb has the more traditional paddle/lever that is exposed when the bonnet is released and lifted against the catch.

Another reason to use a main dealer for MOT's, especially the first MOT when the warranty is about to expire is that they check for anything that could be replaced under warranty.

My 2011 Superb passed it's MOT this morning (Pulman VW in Durham) and I've been charged only £19.95.

They have asked to keep the car overnight to replace the Bolero radio (service campaign) and a few grommets under the bonnet all before the warranty expires in a few days.

    Pull very hard!

Some people use long-nose pliers depending on the available access.

Not cheap, but these are genuine items.

People have had them professionally painted for a fraction of the cost.
  14. silver1011's post in Boot size; hatch vs estate was marked as the answer
It depends what you mean by floor pan, yes they are the same, but the shape of the internal boot floor is slightly different.

This is why there are two boot mats available, one for the hatch and one for the estate.

I used to have both a hatch and an estate at the same time and can confirm both mats fit the two different cars, however it depends how picky you are. If you want a 100% perfect fit then I recommend you source the correct mat.

The only difference is around the cubby holes / storage compartments and along the rearmost edge where the warning triangle (estate) is stored, but we are only talking 10-20mm.
