  1. That might be the case for a bike, but it isn't for a car.
  2. Mine seems to do similar, for downhill 30 limits (coming from a 60), and sits around 2500rpm - not sure what gear.
  3. This might have been the case many years ago when brakes were considered to not be very effective but that certainly ins't the case these days. Any modern day car can easily stop well within the highway code quoted stopping distances by simply using the brakes on normal road conditions. Police/response drivers, and 'advanced' public drivers don't change down through the box as there is no need. Brake, keep braking and then select the required gear for the speed you ar.e travelling at when you need to apply power. I very much doubt that driving instructors recommend shift down through all the gears, but will recommend the block-change approach. The only reason not to - is maybe if you want to check that the driver is paying attention and realised they need to slow down...., but this adds unnecessary clutch and gearbox wear.
  4. I've emailed car-equipment to see if they will do it for £160. By the looks of it, this is a direct fit, no cutting required. Just need VCDS to enable it.
  5. This article might help with working out a best plan of attack: http://kenstechtips.com/index.php/payg-inactivity-account-termination-and-credit-expiry
  6. Hope she was driving a diesel in that case
  7. Sorted - the 'lock' switch has been enabled, so that explains why it wasn't able to delete stuff from the card when I previously ask it to! First time I have ever seen that switch be used!
  8. PC user.... I took an img32 image of the SD card before I started incase anything went wonky, so happy to delete and try again. Cheers. I'm in Wiltshire for work (Amesbury)
  9. Having recently taken delivery on a 14 plate vrs, I thought I'd update the maps. never bothered with the Columbus in my mk2, so this is all uncharted territory for me. Popped in the VIN, and downloaded a zip file from the Skoda site, and then told it to unzip to the Skoda SD card which was in the car, however it said "not enough space" and then "delete files" I replied yes, but nothing happened. I've since ordered a 32GB SD card, can I just install the new maps onto the card and will it work? Guess I'll be going through this process again shortly as there the second yearly updates of maps will be coming along shortly according to the website. Thanks.
  10. I'd imagine the hard bit is getting the cable from the tailgate through the wire 'tubing' back into the body. As much as the proper kit seems expensive, I'd hope the quality might be better than a DIY collection of parts :S Not really sure I want to start modifying either another handle, or cutting the tailgate to get something to fit, thus I might just take the hit on it!
  11. I make that to be about £160..... Does that represent good value? I do like the idea of a proper (VAG) replacement boot handle and camera.
  12. Fitted my front and rear dash cams (BlackVue 650WG), still need to wire in the Magic power box though.
  13. I just use something like this: https://www.lockout-lock.com/masterlock-5400eurd-select-access-key-lock-box That way I don't have a key to misplace while I am away from the car. On my mk2, I just threaded a motorbike (fabric covered) chain though one of my rear alloys.
  14. On Friday I part-ex'd my mk2 for a mk3 vrs, and as it had 3/4 of a tank of fuel I did the sensible (ie. tight @rse) thing and drained out most of the fuel (powered the pump directly and removed a pipe from the fuel filter). This worked a treat, however upon collecting new car, I was unable to get any of the fuel into the tank. It seemed that the 'fuel protection' system wasn't going to allow me to insert the end of the plastic diesel filling funnel I had. A quick google suggested the diameter of a derv pump is 1inch, so I tried a 1inch diameter metal pipe. Still no luck. My Dad now has a stash of fuel for this Fabia. While this is only in theory a one time issue, but if I was ever unfortunate enough to run out of the fuel and bought a some fuel (and a suitable container) at a garage I wouldn't have much faith in the actually being able to transfer said new fuel into the car. Is there a VAG approved filling pipe one can purchase?
  15. I have seem some nice looking mk2 for around 10-11k, but adding in another 4k takes me to a mk3, which seems to come better loaded with toys too. I'll have a columbus from my mk2 I can flog on (as I replaced the bolero) anda few other bits I bought and haven't got around to fitting (towbar, DRLs/fogs, new BCM, etc). I think my daily commute of 120 miles pushes me in the diesel direction. I need to check that the mk3 will actually fit through my garage doors too (the mk2 fits in with an inch or so on the edge of the mirrors.) Paintwork on my 61 plate mk2 isn't great either, but I get the impression that is a Skoda thing these days. The more I think about it, the more the mk3 is appealing to me.
  16. Currently I drive a mk2 1.6tdi, which does the job, but I've always hankered for a vrs and a bit more power. I have a 120mile round trip for work, so spend plenty of time in the car each day. Now my question is mk2 or a mk3? Previously I used to have a 110tdi mk1 which was actually a better drive than my 1.6 (primarily due to the engine). I suspect that with my normal driving style I won't see much of a change in economy between the 1.6 and 2.0cr, but my smiles per mile have the opportunity to increase. Are there any major issues with the DSG boxes if I go down the auto path? In the mean time I'm off to read/research what I can, so hopefully haven't spoken out of turn, but figured I should get the ball rolling. Thanks :-)
  17. On the mk1 ARB bushes and rad mounts sometimes caused such noises, but generally more so when traversing a speedbumps rather than when setting off. Might be worth checking though.
  18. I've noticed a number of times when closing my drivers door window that the glass reaches the top and then rather stopping starts to drop (happens via one touch, manual and with the key in the lock too). Do I just need to give the top surface of a the glass a clean, or is there something more dubious happening? I'm assuming the car is incorrectly assuming that something is trapped, and thus drops the window to prevent injury/damage.
  19. I have full outlook installed, and that syncs my "live.com" calendar using Exchange ActiveSync, the server m.hotmail.com I get my mail, calendar, contacts all synced between my desktop, surface, couple of laptops and my phone. This guide should help you: https://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/accountsettings.htm#outlookcom-eas
  20. It would have to be old old kit not to support WPA2/PSK these days. Cheapest option a wifi extender (https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-WA850RE-Universal-Extender-Configuration/dp/B00AHXXJVW) , or the devolo style ethernet-over-mains (https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-AV500-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/)
  21. Nice rear window tints too :p
  22. I think you can access the sensor by removing the foglight assembly. Plus, I have a feeling it is in't a float assembly, but more likely 2 metal prongs which will probably just need cleaning up (but don't quote me on that!).
