I heard that the batteries have to be changed at around 5-7 years, is this true and it must be expensive.

It needs seeing to as it could get worse and with the breaks get dangerous. Get someone to look at it asap.

I just renewed my AA breakdown cover, the original renew was £210 which is any vehicle with Roadside, Home start and relay. I said i was leaving as that is to much, they came back to me saying as you have been with us for 28 years they would knock it down to £121 which is much better. So always try to haggle as much as you can.
