  1. The thing with modern diesel particulate filters is they like some heat in the exhaust system, so if you do lots of town driving the engine management sometimes has to force the engine to idle at higher revs to generate this and burn off the nasties. The nett result is strange anomalies in MPG figures. If you are able to give the car a long (over 60 mph for more than 20 mins) run on a regular basis the nasties are just burnt off and you will probably see better MPG numbers. Not had any issues with the 105bhp 1.2 tsi so far, just under 2 years and 14k miles. Ambient temperature can make the MPG figures drop but most of the time they are close to the brochure specs. With the DSG box you get an idea of where the power band is (as S mode keeps the engine revs where power is available) and for most things D mode is fine. When you are at the higher end of the revs the engine can get quite raucous but it is rare to push it that hard unless overtaking.
  2. I just use my Garmin GPS as a handsfree kit works quite well, or just get a relatively cheap bluetooth earpiece to do the job. OEM solutions are always expensive and cannot be transferred when you change car.
  3. My other half found something called D-Mannose which seems to do the trick, she and all her friends who have tried it say it relives the symptoms in hours rather than days. Here is a link to one of the many suppliers http://www.waterfall-d-mannose.com/ I know when I went to the Dr with a bladder infection he sent me for all the checks just in case, there are some very invasive and slightly painful things they can do to give you a full check up
  4. Downside you have to make sure there is room before an overtake, car park barriers issues tickets on the passenger side, drive through restaurants cannot be used, your passenger gets freaked out by being in the middle of the road with no controls in front of them.Upside, you get out of the car onto the pavement, you double check to make sure there is room before an overtake.
  5. From the skills you list above, manage a store and run an online selling environment why not consider setting up on your own. A web based business can be run from anywhere and if you are in the right age range and area there are lots of grants you can apply for as a startup business.
  6. For an alternative cable-less solution have a look at devices like Apple TV and the Boxee Box which allow streaming from mobile devices (tablets, phones etc) to your TV. Apple devices call their solution AirPlay and other devices try to use variations of the DLNA protocols. Manufacturers like Sony and Samsung have their own versions of the AirPlay streaming system but you tend to have to have the same brand of mobile device and TV for them to work. Just have a search for things like "samsung galaxy airplay" "boxee box airplay" "apple tv streaming"
  7. Also have the 1.2, 105 engine but with the DSG box (in a Roomster) . To keep the engine in the power range the DSG box will keep revs above 2k when in sport mode but closer to 1.1k for D mode. The DSG box rarely holds on to 1st for long, shifting into 2nd very quickly an only keeping the lower gear when the car is fully laden with passengers (maybe to do with the 7 speed box ratios). For on tap power you need the revs at 2.5k or higher, anything below this you will notice a lag before the power kicks in.
  8. My 1.2 (105bhp) DSG Roomster is returning between 37 and 45 mpg, roughly 450 to 550 miles per tank. Usual range is closer to 450, with 550 miles being the best it has achieved on a long run. Ambient temperature certainly has an effect on mpg, lower the temp worse the mpg (things like idle speed kept higher for longer, whilst the engine heats up).
  9. A lot of kit, a lot of noise, a lot of wires. BUT where do all of the multi outlet sockets feed from? A single domestic ring main or a proper 3 phase circuit? I suppose we all have to have a hobby
  10. The same issue has been mentioned in the Roomster section, not a surprise as the front end of the cars are the same and the Rain-X solution was also mentioned there.
  11. So the VAG group invent the DSG gearbox and every car maker in the World can copy how it works and use it at no cost, Bosch invent the ABS system and no one else who uses it has to pay a royalty fee.It is not just about the thing itself be that a piece of music or something physical. It will take any musician or engineer years of studying and many failed attempts to get something right. This has a cost, how do they live during this time, should there not be some reward for this? If you want films to cost less to make why not pay actors less money, if you want your Sky subscription to cost less why not pay footballers less money? If there is little or no reward for taking the time to create a piece of art or invent something new how many people would take the time to do it. Maybe this is a good idea as it would stop shows like the X Factor being on TV as no one would try to get rich by becoming a "star"
  12. Interesting an iPad AppleCare warranty is 2 years as standard and Apple have been taken to court over trying to sell the extra warranty when European consumer law already covers most things for 2 years.Standard iPad AppleCare cover... http://store.apple.c...n-plan-for-ipad Apple's additional statement on warranty after EU court rulings... http://www.apple.com...utory-warranty/ Have a look at the AirWatch solution, minimum 25 devices for an initial cost between 2-3K including full product training for the administrator.
  13. So they are not bothered about viruses, being introduced to their network or IT infra structure, inappropriate material (pornographic or otherwise) being disseminated by their routers or any other myriad ways they could be seen as negligent or complicit in allowing such things to happen.Sounds like they are ripe for claims on their liability insurance then.
  14. Had to get the screen replaced on my Roomster when it was less than a month old. The only unexpected thing to happen was a connector under the bonnet got knocked during the replacement and this disabled the reversing lights whilst telling me the bulbs had blown. Had to take it to a dealer to find the fault as changing the bulbs had no effect. Not sure which screen type you have but if it is 1 with the embedded aerial (black line in the middle) make sure you get a like for like replacement.
  15. There are several issues here. However, if the ipads are owned and controlled by a business or corporate type entity then you can set up an Apple ID for the group or organisation. This allows volume license purchasing for apps. The agreement Apple has with software developers is that they will control the distribution of the apps and hence the need to download them and update from the app store. If you could just download the app and distribute it on yourself there would be no control. It is possible to register as a corporate developer and distribute in house apps via corporate servers. As others have mentioned as well as the free Apple Configurator tool there are third party paid services such as MobileIron and AirWatch that allow much more control in terms of distributing profiles, apps and other configuration options. Using a personal Apple ID for such a deployment was probably not the best route to go down. Any organisation trying to take shortcuts or save money should then accept there will be a consequence of this. The reason there are paid solutions is that it takes time to develop them and if you want a company to be around for years and years to support things they need some income. I would suggest setting up a corporate Apple ID and using this to reconfigure all of the devices from scratch using the Apple Configurator. For a more robust solution I would look at the paid options. There are several white papers on the Apple website discussing deployment of mobile devices in business environments and it may be worth reading through these.
  16. The only car I have had this work on whilst driving was a Citroen Pluriel, had to stamp on the brakes when some quick change pedestrian crossing lights went to red. It's OK if someone is not too close behind you but if you are braking hard enough to activate the lights then you probably have rear bumper damaged as well!
  17. This might be a good advert for selling you tyres but what does it say about the traction control system on the car? I know traction control can't compensate for physics but you would think a car with less grip would work the traction control harder so you did have more control of steering etc.
  18. There are still advantages to bricks and mortar. You want to know the exact size of something take a tape measure to a shop. You want to know if something will fit, try it on before you buy it. You want to know a particular quirk of something, talk to a knowledgable member of staff. The problem has been shops paying rubbish money and not training staff. If you invest in the staff then you have a better quality of service but this small fact seems to have been overlooked by the highly paid boards and management teams trying to please shareholders and banks rather than customers. Online has it's place but it still has some PITA factors such as returning goods and having to get things sent to you just to see if they fit. Does the online trend mean most retail staff will become warehouse administrators or courier van drivers?
  19. Report to local police and the companies being scammed. Then it is up to them how far they want to take things.
  20. Yup, no problems unless your Mac cannot connect to the NAS for any reason.Create a volume on the NAS for TM to use, mount the volume on your Mac, then tell TM that you want to use that volume for TM backups, job done. Just make sure the account you use to log in to the NAS has full access to the volume you want to use.
  21. As well as the phone and operating system you may want to consider how it will back up and synchronise with other things you use. Which email service do you use, which diary system do you use? Most smart phones have methods of keeping things such as email, diary and contact lists synchronised between phone, desktop, laptop and Cloud.
  22. Thanks for all the advice, I had read about the super chlorinate process and suspect the builder just didn't bother doing anything like this after completing the house. (Should have made it clearer we are the 1st owners, new build house). We still have to check with the neighbours about their plumbing but we have had the water company out to the house and they tell us what we are experiencing is, "common", "not a problem", "nothing they can do anything about" and they took water samples to have them tested, they all came back as OK. The only other things I have seen online are hydrogen peroxide and silver treatments which are used in some commercial applications.
  23. Ok a bit random but we moved in to a new house a couple of years ago and all of the cold water sources, taps, showers, toilet cisterns keep building up black gunk. The local water company have been in and tested the supply telling us that everything is chemically within tolerance i.e. the right balance of chlorine and other stuff in the supply. The water company say there is nothing we can do, just have to put up with cleaning everything all the time or put up with the black gunk coming out of taps when washing hands or showering. What I am trying to find out is how common this problem is and is there any way to permanently cure it? Thanks in advance for any advice. For those not sure what biofilm is here is the wiki page explaining it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biofilm
  24. On 1 side I can see your POV it's like a customer blaming a car manufacturer for a fuel issue. The car cannot run without the fuel but the support for each product is not linked. However, as mentioned this does provided opportunities for either your company or another partner company who could provide the support and you just take a commission from each lead you give them.
  25. Maybe it was just the wrong "crime of the month" we are always being told this month the police are cracking down on... Drunk drivers Knife crime Drug crime etc etc etc As others have said there seems to be a lot of statistic led policing for headlines and sound bites. It may also be the police know it doesn't matter how many times they catch or prosecute for certain crimes the punishment is no deterrent so it is just a waste of time and paperwork.
