  1. I had our wheely bin attack my Roomster, small dent in the tailgate, but not worth increasing next years insurance premium by making a claim.
  2. Check if there is any bloatware on your Garmin. Mine came with things like language and city guide demonstrations on it, which can be deleted. Also check what languages and icons you have installed as removing some of these can also save space. The only other thing to check is do you have an SD card slot on the unit as you can install updates on to these.
  3. Had my Roomster for 2.5 years, it's a great little car. As mine has the DSG box I didn't have to worry too much about running in as the computer looked after things. The temp gauge is very simple, blue light = cold, no light = OK and red light = too hot. With the DSG D mode for economy will always try to change gear below 2,000 revs, in S (sport mode) it will keep the revs between 2,000 and 3,000 so you get instant power from the loud pedal. The DSG will cruise at motorway speeds (70mph) in 7th at about 2,500 revs (not sure about the manual box). As well as the ticket holder, the pop out shopping bag holders in the boot are really useful to stop things flailing about in the boot and the cubby under the passenger seat is handy too.
  4. Why not just look over the pond to see how a United Staes of Great Britain would work. Single currency and defence system but different taxes, laws and other local powers. The thing is how far do you take local control. There are parts of Scotland who feel they are treated differently from others because of geography or population, should they get more devolved powers? There is no single answer. For some things you need local control and for others it makes sense to share.
  5. Thoughts on tyre wear from the internet, maybe true maybe hearsay: As a diesel engine is heavier the tyres will wear faster than on a petrol engine car. As diesel produces more torque lower in the rev range the tyres can wear more quickly. If the above does have any validity then tyre wear will also change based on how many people are in the car on a regular basis.
  6. If you have any Western Digital External drives DO NOT upgrade to Mavericks. Just do a web search for "western digital mavericks" to see all the issues.
  7. It would be interesting if the whole country felt there was no point in going to work unless after paying all your bills you still had £500 per week in your pocket as spending money. That would make the living/minimum wage about £60k, I wonder where the Government are getting there figures for these amounts from?
  8. Having tried to use various brands of router and network box to achieve a VPN into my (and client) Apple networks I now use a DrayTek Vigor 2830n and it just works. Whilst the protocols are supposed to be "standard" it seems some manufacturers have their own take on what this means so their products do not just work. The only issue I have had with the DrayTek products is they can lock up and need a reboot every so often, but you can do this using telnet commands from any web browser. The only other way around things is to set up a DMZ with an Apple server handling all the network traffic before it reaches your LAN. But this means buying more servers than you probably want to.
  9. Most manufacturing groups from cars to domestic appliances have a similar branding model. So for the VAG group they put all the latest tech and features in the high end brands, like Audi, 1st then filter them down to the more budget brands like Skoda and Seat over time. So a brand new Skoda will be based on the Audi platform from 2 - 3 years ago. In the domestic appliance market Bosch tend to be the Skoda brand of the BSH group, so you will see the newer tech in a Siemens product before a Bosch product and you have to buy a top end Bosch washing machine to have the same features as a mid range Siemens machine. In the UK the Electrolux group has AEG as their top end brand with Electrolux next and Zanussi being the budget end. So a Zanussi machine is based on an AEG product not the other way around. However, in the rest of Europe Electrolux is seen as a more prestigious brand than AEG so you find that both AEG and Electrolux products have similar features in them. Every customer has a different requirement from their domestic appliance (as does every car buyer) some want the cheapest to purchase, some the cheapest to run, some the longest life span. You may well find a Miele machine lasts 20 - 30 years but after about 5 years it will be the nosiest, most inefficient machine you could own. Compare the MPG, noise and safety features of a 20 year old car with a 5 year old or new model. Also bear in mind that the Eurocrats change regulations every 5 minutes on energy efficiency and how easy it is to recycle machines at end of life.
  10. The difference is that in the Roomster the outer row 2 seats can be in front of behind the centre seat, in the Yeti they can't do this. This was the reason I went for a Roomster and not a Yeti.
  11. The latest version of iTunes 11.1.1 has "Show Duplicate Items" under the View menu. You have to select music from your library before the item is active.
  12. It is usually flats that are leasehold and houses that are freehold. The advantage of having the freehold is your lease never runs out and you have a say in any work or repairs that are done to the building. If you are in a flat the building insurance is handled by the freeholder which means you don;t have any say in who you go to and cannot shop around for the best premium. In general freehold is better than leasehold.
  13. Even if you only have the standard screen and not Maxi Dot the same applies. Current MPG can be used as an economy meter telling you how much you are using the loud pedal, whist average MPG gives you an idea of how you have been driving since you last put some fuel in the tank.
  14. Social media is not the first medium to cause people great distress and upset. Journalists have been doing this for years. Trial by TV and Press has caused people to take their own lives over the years. Most of the time it is possible to shrug off the inane witterings of bullies and those with nothing better to do than try to belittle or harm others. Sticks and stones and all that. However, sometimes these comments, especially when sustained and backed up in real life (like at school) can take their toll. The difficult thing is for the victims of such torment to recognise the need for help and then find someone who can give the appropriate support. It is when someone feels there is no other way out that they take what they feel is the only option to escape.
  15. Considering the legislation and Government intent to give us all super-fast fibre broadband was put in place in the early 1980's and the fact that only 55% of UK households can receive any Virgin Media service tells us how well the plan is going. Over 30 years and yet not even half of the country has access to download speeds over 10mb/s.
  16. On my Roomster the strangeness is down to the anti-trap function. there is a section in your manual about resetting this. Essentially the window thinks something is trapped (a hand, head, child etc) and opens a small amount to release it.
  17. Having watched Undercover Boss with the guy from Hyundai the other week I am not surprised. Hyundai have every single UK car arrive in Tilbury Docks and to manage this they employ one guy from an agency (on a weekly renewal contract) with a clipboard and some paper. It can take them hours to find which cars should go on which transporters to go to each dealer. It is amazing that with the value of the inventory involved they don't have to keep better track of it. Imagine making a claim to the your insurer and saying the car is somewhere between the factory and the dealer but I don't know where, they would just laugh at you.
  18. Aside from the fact no one will be able to search for any organisation offering help to victims of any "filtered" act, you get back to the age old discussion of art vs porn http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7016651.stm http://theosophical.wordpress.com/2009/05/27/art-vs-pornography-whats-the-difference/ If there is a rule or piece of protection devised by a person then it can usually be circumvented by a person, either in a technical way (hacking) or by a simpler method (replacing letters and spaces).
  19. My wife had a similar issue with tyres cracking on one of her cars. From what I could find out it seems to be a degradation due to exposure to sunlight. The car was always left on the drive with the 2 tyres with cracks facing the sun. I expect with the recent sunny spell the tyres have had a lot more exposure than usual and this has added to the rubber compound degrading.
  20. Is the Roomster a lot heavier than the Fabia then?. I recognise the RPM figures as they are exactly the same as my DSG returns but I am surprised by the low figures you are getting MPG. Skoda quote the following weights: Roomster Kerb weight - kg 1,196 Total weight - kg 1,726 Fabia Kerb weight - kg 1,089 Total weight - kg 1,619 The fuel tank is 10 litres larger in the Roomster than the Fabia, which could add another 7kg So there is about 100kg difference. A stop/start system would help as you notice the mpg figures plummet when waiting at traffic lights.
  21. I have the 1.2/DSG combination in a Roomster, just coming up for it's 24 month service (covered 16k miles). All good so far. The DSG keeps the revs under 2k for normal driving and between 2 and 3k in S (sport, hills and twisty bits) mode. MPG varies between mid 30's and low 40's and can be very temperature dependent (better on warm days, not so good in the winter). Can sound like it's going to explode when reaching the redline but you get used to that.
  22. Depends on all sorts of risk and investment time criteria but I when I had some cash from a house sale I put a lump sum (between 10k and 20k) into premium bonds, you always get your initial investment back and whilst the returns are not guaranteed I was regularly winning small amounts with the chance of bigger returns, up to 1 million pounds, every month.
  23. It is possible to buy induction hobs that run from a standard 13amp supply (Bosch/Neff make them) they do however power manage the cooking zones in order to draw less power. As for drawing power when in standby not sure why this would be as any unit with no pan sitting on it will turn off after about 30 seconds.
  24. Unfortunately it does sound like reason is being left behind in the discussions you are having with the other director. I suppose you could offer any number of solutions, it is just a question of how reasonable the other party wants to be. You could offer that your partner buys you out, so you require a valuation on the company and he pays half of that to obtain 100% of the shares. You could suggest you become a non working shareholder in the business and he has to pay you a dividend based on your share holding. This allows you to go and start another business whilst still getting some income from the company you helped to build. You are really negotiating the difference between what each director feels the other is/has contributed to the company. With 50:50 shareholdings this is technically equitable but for whatever reason this is not perceived as reality.
  25. The only thing to be wary of at the moment are the press reports of the state of PSA finances
