Octavia VRS...To ESP or not to ESP?

Featured Replies

Hey all. Am ordering my new Octavia VRS in the next few days, however I'm not sure whether to get the ESP option. Can anyone tell me whether it is worth the extra

Dealer is probably correct.

I can't say i've ever thought "oooh...i could have really done with ESP there" :D

I have, and then turned it off.

Handy if you over cook it or encounter standing water. Actually no use at all on snow, unless your willing to trust it, I wasn't which is when I turned it off.

It's a tough call, it really is. Persoanlly I'm glad I have it there, peace of mind. You'll get TC anyway...

...I'd say no. But it's handy and I do see it flash away when pushing on...if your a psuhing on type of driver maybe. We need a swing o meter.

Didn't even know you could get it on a bog standard Octavia RS? Thought it was only available to the WRC editions?

Jabba? ;)

Wow...a mind reader :D

Colin, the question is, would you pay an extra

Erm, would I spend 450 notes...erm no.

It's really wierd anyway...when you need it most it fights you eg thin snow.

Standing water / aqua or lift off oversteer are about the only times I've felt it kick in.

All of course fixed by driver if it were not there.

got it put onto my fabia vrs purely as a safety option (new baby arrived) good to know its there if i do get into bother in difficult conditions but most of the time you dont notice it unless you're really pushing it. looking around at other marques(why would i want to do that i hear you ask!) it does seem tho that more and more of the 'sportier' models are having it fitted as standard - a fact which to me says its quite useful cos i cant see major manufacturers adding something which costs them cash if it wasnt necessary. car reviewers seem to put it in the 'safety' category along with side/curtain airbags - just look at how those babys have moved on in the last few years (renault especially) airbags for your knees as well as your nipples! so i guess i would sum up to say that its more of a hidden safety feature which keeps your car 'up with the jones' as far as gadgets are concerned.

p.s try and organise a bigger discount cos of the increased wait - i did :)

Well coming from bergen, norway were there is a lot of rain, snow and ice during the year i can tell you that ESP is worth the money. I've had one experience where the ESP system shined and made sure i didn't hit a car. Mind you it was down hill at around 40 km/h at a curve.

There was a report in norway made by the traffic department that calculated that around 70 lives (out of the ca 300 traffic related deaths a year) could possibly have been saved per year if all the cars had ESP as standard installed. With this in mind don't you think it's worth it??

shamelessly copied from a reply i made to another esp yay or nei post

Ive got it on the 4x4 abeit its standard fit on the 4x4, slightly different car I agree but it has proved useful a couple of times, usually when Im in a hurry & tired, on a 2WD I would have thought it even more useful

Have just been onto the dealer again to double check that they didn't have a vehicle with the spec I want (Cruise control, parking sensors and ESP), and they now tell me not only do they not have one, but they can't order one either. Apparently Skoda will only let me order that spec if I have xenons as well. I can have ESP on its own, but not with the other 2 options unless I have xenons. Does this sound strange to anyone else? Is it maybe something to do with production shifting to new Octavia?

Cheers all for help so far

What do people think of the xenons...are they much better, or just an expensive waste of time?

Get the xenons. You want regret it. If fact you'll probably never buy a car without them ever again.

You might regret having xenons in the longer term if replacement parts are needed:

Thanks for the price list DGW. Are they prone to needing new parts? If so, are these covered on the warranty and for how long?

The SkodaAuto provide a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty on new vehicles. SkodaAutoUK provides further warranty on new vehicles provided by them through their dealer network until 60,000 miles or the end of the third year, whichever is the sooner. I haven't a clue about the reliability of xenon headlight components, and the warranty doesn't cover fair wear and tear. My point is that expensive components are involved and replacements in the longer term could involve some big bills. A relatively minor accident involving headlight damage could also be rather expensive to fix. That said, those that have xenons love them.

This is all sounding weird.....I don't rememeber ESP being an 'option' on my 2003 vRS Octavia....I thought it was fitted as standard! only option I had fitted was parking sensors....oh and the best colour.......met black :-)

I agree with denis, veery good, but expensive. I had a problem with them, luckily I was under warranty, the total cost came to

Thanks again all...think I'm gonna place my order tomorrow. VRS with parking sensors, cruise control, esp and xenons. Can't wait to get it...the test drive had me smiling for a good few hours.

I also thought hat traction control and esp was standard. I have 51 plate car. How do I know if I have it or not?

There is a button next to the fuel cap release etc with ESP on it I think - When I press it a light comes on the rev counder. Looks like a warning triangle with arrows round it. Same light goes on if I floor it in 1st. Is this it?
