DIY Guide: The 'elephant hose CCV (catch-can) mod'

Featured Replies

Did this today, my god the amount of oil in the pipe does have to be seen to be believed!

I couldn't find anything to bung the intake hole, initially. Whilst walking round Sainsburys (other supermarkets are available) I picked up a small bottle of Jacob's Creek that looked like it had a cork (you can see the thinking here) Sadly, when I got home, I found that it's just a plastic cover for the screw-top......................which only fits perfectly over the intake! :) :) (And I do mean perfectly)

So, job done *and* a glass of wine to celebrate!

  • Thanks Ross - you're quite right of course - but I wanted to avoid any hot air at all coming into the intake.

Oops! Did the bung get sucked in to the turbo??

Reading through the thread, it was mentioned that the re-circulation helps emissions. If this is full of oil vapor, which is now mixed with the lovely clean air, heading into the cylinder to be burned, how is that helping emissions?

Also, I have seen this re-circulation on my old 1972 Morris Marina, from the days when we didn't care about emissions.

No its the exhaust gases coming in through the egr that help with the emissions, the ccv getting recycled just mixes with the sooty exhaust and produces gunge.

Nah not quite, AA told me the elephant mod I did caused my eml to come on, I used a coke bottle lid to bung the inlet, worked fine. 2 days later I find a split boost pipe causin the EML light! Sh**y AA! So ive put the coke lid back on!! I'm no mechanic, but I know what I'm doing!

Correct! Should take about 5 mins to do!

lovely, will get on that this week :)

I bought the same setup, but found that the tank contained zero filtering material, so the catch can wasn't exactly catching much and because the vent was under the bonnet, the cabin always used to smell of oil vapour sucked in through the scuttle panel.

I removed the catch can after about 2 weeks and just routed a 1m long hose down to the subframe pointing backwards. No smell, no maintenance, no mess.

Sorry if it's been covered but does having the elephant mod being vented to air cause any issues on an MOT??

I had no issues with mine, though I have a catch can. Didn't even show as an advisory.

For anyone still needing help with this here are a couple of my earlier posts. First quote is what I bought & second quote is how it all looks now.
