DIY Guide: The 'elephant hose CCV (catch-can) mod'

Featured Replies

Just fitted one of these to my car. I've never claimed to be good with mechanics, and it took me around an hour. Mind you it was cold and dark lol. Oh and it rained.

I'll post up the items below that I used for those that are unsure of what they need.

Had to put a cable tie in to stop it from hitting the rad fan. is pretty close...

Looks like you attached the blue hose directly to the 90degree black hose, how did you manage that since they're very different diameters? Most do away with the black OEM bit of hose and use a seperate piece of 19mm ID silicone, the piece I had was soft enough to seal around the metal inlets of the catch can with a tight jubilee clip.

The hose i used was a smaller diamiter than the one on the OEM black hose. it just slotted right in there and held tight enough for me not to bother needing to do anything else. I might replace it all though when i relocate the catch can. I got that hose in the kit.

Exactly the same set up as mine. Took 5 mins to do. Engine feels all the better for it too!

50 p for the 24mm id walking stick rubber (perfectly snug fit) £4 for 1 metre of 19mm id black pipe.

http://www.briskoda....attach_id=34476

could I not just disconnect the oem pipe at the air filter end, block the hole and fit a crankcase filter on the end of the pipe? should be just long enough to tuck to the back so if the filter does drip, it won't do it all over the engine?

I only ask as I have a filter, but no black pipe and so htought it would be an easy way that would also look pretty tidy.

like this below?. is this likely to cause bother? The breather pipe is twisted 10 degrees and a breather filter is on. A Wilkinson walking stick end is on the other pipe. Started up and it feels nice, there is a bit of oil smelling steam/ smokefrom the filter, as much as a lit fag, like someone else said.

WARNING

THE. WALKING STICK ENDS HAVE A WASHER IN THE BOTTOM. WHEN FITTING MINE, I HEARD A LITTLE RATTLE. THE WASHER HAD DROPPED DOWN THE AIR INTAKE AND INTO THE ENGINE WHICH I HAD TO RETRIEVE. LUCKILY IT DIDNT GO TOO FARAND I NOTICED, DONT THINK THAT GETTING SUCKED IN WOULD BE GOOD!

Does anyone forsee probs with my setup, as it is neatly tucked away. The filter is positioned so if it drips, it doesn't drip on anything and I will check it every so often. There was sooooo much oil in the air intake it unreal. That would all be going into the engine i guess.

In answer to an old post on here, it is a pd170.

Cover on, screwdriver showing mini filter at back

Please let me know thoughts, as a mechanic I ain't!!!

In my experience the filter clogged up even with a catch can fitted in between with what I thought was a good filtering medium, it still managed to get past and I got a smell of hot oil coming through the vents. Only me who seems to have had this issue though.

I don't think there's any need for a filter in any case especially when doing the cheap version as you've got a 1m long hose attached, any suction even while cooling (the only time it could happen) would never be enough to suck anything up surely, and you wouldn't park it in a lake anyway. You'd have to be under 6 inches of water when you get out for the pipe to be submerged. :giggle: When then engine is running there is only a constant positive pressure caused by blow-by past the pistons, this is what I've learned at least.

I had the catch can fitted for a short time but it just gathered too much gunk too quickly and the pipes narrowed rapidly too, not to mention the smell. £10 for 1m of silicone pipe, 99p bung, job done.

..anybody want to buy my old catch can? :p

Ok, but it won't kill anything running like this till I find the tubing I need, will it?

I doubt it, you've not physically blocked the filter, it will just catch whatever oil vapour emulsion that comes out and make the cabin smell a bit as the engine warms up, just because the smell will vent at the top of the bonnet and will immediately be sucked in through the scuttle panel.

If left in for longer it may saturate the filter and start to drip on whatever surface is below it, and if that's the exhaust manifold then it'll smell even worse.

I went for this when I converted from catch can to elephant pipe, it's better quality than the ASH pipe and less inclined to kink.

2 days and the maxidot mpg has increased by 1.5 mpg on my commutes. at 150miles per day, every bit helps!

Hi peeps,

A quick question. Elephant mode, can you do it on AWX engine (TDI 130PD), anyone with info and some pictures please :)

Hi peeps,

ignore the post, got it sorted today :)

Update on this mod.

Better throttle responce

No visible smoke at all even under full throtle

Mpg improved by about 2 mpg

No oil mist going through turbo and intetcooler.

Win win win!

Thanks all for sharing this no brainer mod.

Ok, so my first attempt fell flat. Apart from dropping the washer from the inside of the walking stick end down the air intake to where it could've done some damage if I hadn't noticed, I screwed up.

I made a vent tube from the plastic middle of a till roll, connected to a mini crankcase breather filter.

Checked today. The filter has gone from red to black and is dripping with oil, but even worse, the pipe I made melted and split spewing oily vapour all over the top of the engine.

I have now redone it all and am happy and thought I would post what I did. It seems to me you can get a much neater job on the pd170 and I know someone else asked if anyone had done it.

I got 1m of this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290136672749?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

There is a plastic pipe that goes from the crankcase to the air intake that looks like this:

IMG_00000085_zps04a4fabe.jpg

Both ends can be twisted to point in any direction. You squeeze the plastic ring together and it pops off.

I then pushed the pipe onto it. To be sure, I also wrapped some tape round to keep it on, although it is snug:

IMG_00000086_zps0b1d6c42.jpg

The plastic pipe can then be fitted to the crankcase, but twisted to point to the back of the engine, where the hose can go down and cabletie to the subframe.

No cutting, nice and neat and reversible in about 60 seconds. Looks very oem to me and I am pleased with it.

So there you have it- make sure the tubing can handle HOT vapour, and don't drop washers into your engine!!!

Oh, also don't cabletie to the exhaust. They melt and drop off. I think i did every error possible to save everyone else!!!!

Oh, also don

completely agree, next step Turing EGR down, don't fancy complete removal

I've just driven Oulton park (27th Feb) and was running full throttle or full on braking with not much in between . Car was brilliant ! Noticed it seemed louder than before the elephant mod when under full throttle.

While no smoke is visible in most road driving i had a slight coating of soot on the back end which was about 70% less than before the elephant mod.

Running Asda's finest diesel with rhino diesel .

:hi:

Good news mate. Without trying to derail, what's Rhino Diesel like in comparison to Millers? I heard DR had more in the way of cleaning additives than Millers.

I've ran millers for the last 125k miles and just started on the diesel rhino only used a tank so far and only managed 17 mpg (bloody Oulton park for you) . Been told for best results use a basic diesel like Asda as this works best with the additive. Using fancy v power will make it worse.

how? I have a blanking plate and have seen ones with holes drilled in. is it as simple as that? or do I need vagcom access too?

also, stupid q. if there is oil vapour leaving the engine, do I need to check level more often?

where did the oil go before? was it just burned off in the engine or did it recycle back in again?

i have been told that removing egr completely is a bad idea, and have seen arguments on both sides, so decided to meet in the middle and use vagcom to turn it down some.

Also as for oil vapor it used to go through your air intake, though your intercooler then though your EGR and then finally through your turbo. Dependant on your setup it would with the elephant mod go to atmosphere or back to air intake as before
