I gave it some serious abuse this morning to see what it could do - the best

Did the braking performance not improve with the suspension then? I would have thought it would to be honest, less squirmy under hard braking perhaps is what I would expect.

The car is less squirmy now, but I drove it very very hard this morning and the brakes need more power to cope with that kind of driving

how much is the eibach coilover kit as i feel tempted

:D

Most the squirming is a result of the silly ABS/EBD messing with brakeforce to each wheel. i found on the smaller brakes it was adjusting side to side.. but now with 312+ds2500 it only adjusts front/rear... and it doesnt even do that much with the toyos

I really must get one of these 312mm set ups :P

wishful thinking ;)

Ive got one set for you Mob, as soon as I have some free time all be doing yours and Xaviers.

Just painting the brakes up now :)

Care to share what paint your using?... i may need some soon ;)

Same here.

At the handling day Jason said he got his green paint from Miltec I think.

What difference does the 312mm brakes actually make though? Shortened stopping distance? I am not sure how that would work, since the standard brakes are more than capable of locking the wheels / engaging the ABS system, and since the best stopping distances are achieved just short of doing that, I cant really see that it will decrease stopping distances. Does it reduce brake fade? I have not had any yet, even though I do drive pretty fast. Or does it simply increase the "responsiveness" of the brakes to pedal inputs? I can quite believe that, but what good does it ultimately do, except giving the user a false sense of security that their brakes are better than what they really are?

Maybe I am overlooking something obvious here, but the standard brakes should be more than good enough for road use, even when chipped IMHO. If you take it on a track regularly, then fair enough, but I'd have to say there must be some pretty mental drivers on here that can get the brakes to fade, because I aint managed it yet (even on a long, high speed run on the A686, a road full of sharp bends and hairpins).

I think the brakes are poor. they loose effectiveness very quickly especially on decellerating on a slip road off a motorway. they dont inspire confidence in their performance.. but the 312s do. they are of a different design and are much more efficient at braking hard in a controlled manner. i cant really comment as ive got ds2500 as well which has a big impact on braking power..

From the brunters day, I can certainly vouch for the effectiveness of 312mm discs (with ds2500 pads). It's simple: there just is NO brake fade, no matter how relentless and frequent you stamp on the middle pedel ;)

312mm probably helps to keep the disc surface cooler and help reduce brake fade. I reckon the ds pads give you more bite. Stopping power is increased and I believe there is a lot more "feel" in braking, but can't comment on that as I don't have that setup myself (yet :D)

Has anyone tried just using DS pads?

It's mainly to reduce brake fade and make braking more consistent :) Basically, when the brakes are used in anger, the heat generated causes the fluid to boil which results in brake fade. So, by helping to dissipate this heat, the fluid will not boil and the brakes will still be effective. Ways of dissipating the heat are a) bigger discs, B) grooved discs, c) cross-drilled discs, d) cold air feeds to the brakes, or e) a combination of all of the above. Improving the quality of the brake fluid to dot 4 or dot 5.1 will raise its boiling point, and improving the quality of the pads will increase the initial bite and maybe the feel. Braided brake hoses may also help with this, but I'm not sure how good the Furby ones are as standard.

For road driving, however, just changing the fluid and pads should be ample :D

Chris

Do anyone make uprated pads for the Fabia vRS yet? Like Pagid or Ferodo.

That's what I was wondering - new pads and fluid.

The Furby brakes feel so crap after driving the Octy. I also think the ABS kicks in too happily.

Driver is crap too - well overweight, ugly and lazy.

I think Greenstuff do - check with amd

Green stuff ones have had a bit of a slating on the octys .

I dont think the brakes lack effectiveness going down slip roads - yes I would agree you have to brake harder than in many cars because of the weight and less engine braking that is available on the car, but I've never had any problems stopping quickly.

If I had any criticisms of the brakes it would be that the car squirms a bit when braking in anger, and that sometimes the ABS kicks in a little too keenly at times. And if I was being ultra critical, I would say that they are a touch spongey (but actually this has improved quite a bit since it has run in). The sponginess is the main thing I'd expect the brake upgrade to improve, and the squirming I had hoped would be solved with a suspension upgrade.

Nevertheless, I am not trying to argue here, just trying to think about this logically.
