Sticking to the speed limits

Featured Replies

I suppose I should learn to find that amusing too, 'cos at the moment, it annoys the hell out of me!

The jokes on them cause they're the w****r making the error. If they want to overtake they should get on with it and not be bothered by the camera ;)

i had a woman last year or the year before on the m4, came into a 50 limit by the bath turn off and knew the speed camera was there, approched it at 55 and let off the accelorator to slow down for it with her inches from my bumper. she saw it at the last second and slowed down to about 30 (panic braking?)

I've seen people do this too, but the f*ck-wits are usually just in front of me!!

I approve of someone who is obeying the speed limit, especially in a 20/30/40 zone where children/pedestrians etc are liable to just step out in front of them, and have no problems with it.

What I do find irritating is when entering into a 60/70 limit, said person in front still pootling along at 20 below the limit.

I think If I remember correctly, you can travel at the speed limit +10% +4MPH, so on a motorway, 81 would be a reasonable speed to tavel at without fear of being 'done' for speeding.(An indicated 85-90 on speedo, as Skoda speedos are almost always registering about 10% more than you are actually travelling at!)

I wouldn't find travelling at 37MPH in a 30MPH zone acceptable though - hitting a pedestrian at 7MPH more can mean the difference between life and death.Stuff the person behind if they can't handle doing the speed limit and tailgate you, they'll be the ones forking out of their insurance if they run into you if you have to stop suddenly.

At the end of the day, motoring should be a fun and enjoyable experience.Drive safe & dont worry what others think.

It's 10% + 2mph, although it's only a guideline and I don't think every constabulary uses it (North Wales springs to mind...) But I do agree with you and Ken in that I'm certainly not going to puch the bounds of that anywhere that pedestrians are likely to be... :smirk:

I would love to agree with you however the speeding ticket I have here for going 81 in a 70 would tend to suggest otherwise.

I've also been done for 85 in a 70 once. although im sure i was going a tad faster before i slamed on the breaks! whoops. that was 2 years ago. i've learnt what to look out for now:)

have a look on Association of Chief Police Officers think the guidelines for a lot of things are on there, but at the end of the day its just that.

I do my best to drive at the speed limit where it is safe to do so. I do my very best not to go over, but I work on what the GPS thingy says I'm doing. Thus in a 30 I will typically be at an indicated 34 on the speedo.

I don't like when people do 30 in a safe 40 zone, nor 40 in a safe 50 or NSL - as I said, up to the speed limit wherever it is safe to so do seems the correct approach to me.

It's also much less effort and stress than trying to squeeze another minute or two off the journey time, and you burn a lot less fuel.

correct, by speeding you only save the time of blowing your nose at the end of the journey.

Just after getting my my Fabia 1.9 estate I got cought by a speed camera and was given a choice of getting 3 points on my licence or going on a speed awareness course. 4 things I remember from the course 1. at 30 mph you are travelling at 45 feet per second speedometers are calibrated at 28mph when reading 30 mph to keep you on the right side of the law and if you hit someone at 40mph the chances are that you will kill them where at 30 they have a chance of survival. Speed cameras and mobile units are only put where there have been at least three accidents apparently they are not put where they will catch the most motorists though you sometimes think it is :o)

speedo's can only ever overread, they are not allowed to under read the speed.

Simply - It's a LIMIT not a TARGET...

Have been driving at speed limit or just below recently due to fuel prices and can make a considerable difference by driving at 55 on some A roads. Always catch the lorries anyway, just don't need to sit behind them for so long before getting past at the next dual carraigeways every 10 or so miles. I do quite a bit of driving from glasgow down to newcastle, leeds and hull etc, and it really hasn't made any difference to time, just improves wallet by a tenner a run.

Actually, whilst none of that is lies, it's all half-truths except the points about speed and speedometer calibration.

If you hit someone without taking any evasive action, the most likely cause is "pedestrian entered carriageway without looking"; actually, that's the most likely cause anyway, since it's the official cause of something like 5/6 of all "car vs pedestrian" crashes in the UK.

As for that claim about Greed Scamera and Tallyvan positioning, that really is a half truth. They are only positioned within a 2 mile radius of the said hotspot. I'm sure you all know somewhere where there is an over-restricted dual carriageway stretch within 2 miles of a potential or actual hot spot, such as a junction with a poor sightline onto an NSL road.
