Dell server 99+vat free delivery WTF?

Featured Replies

Wow! That's not bad!

Add delivery at £50 and a VAT to everything and it's close to £200 , but could still be worth a look for some people

Doesn't look so good when you add an operating system!

RedHat Enterprise Linux 5, 1-2 Socket 3-year RedHat Network Subscription [add £1,020.00] Even Windows Server is 455 quid. Then there's the additional cost of a monitor! I reckon their offer is sailing quite close to breaching the new trading laws (tempt you with the low price, but get something pretty unusable) announced last month.

Free delivery - VAT takes it to a total of £116.33. Pretty cheap! :)

 It's not unusable, you just need to source your own operating system - you're not buying a complete system, you're buying hardware, onto which you can then install your own OS...given the range of free distributions out there I wouldn't see that as a major obstacle.

Plus it's a server, you don't need a monitor for a server, hence why they haven't bundled one and put the price up accordingly...

Oooh , hadn't noticed free delivery.

That's pretty handy

Hmm...i see a new linux test box for me coming up ! :D

Aye that's a good buy all you realy need to do is up the RAM a bit, but that would be ideal as a print server of similar.

Throw ubuntu on it and it's cheap as.

I don't see any RoSH details on it so wonder if it's a clear out of older stock.

Looks a great deal that - could make use of one of those. Think a purchase might be on the cards.

Thanks for the link

yes and yes, it comes with 2 80gb sata drives.

You could, though there would be the considerations of licensing XP (ahem) and I'm not sure how great XP is as a dedicated file server...essentially it would just be like sharing files between two XP machines though, so if that's all you had in mind it'd be fine.

2 x 80Gb.
