2.0TDI DSG problem -

Recommended Posts

I've had a search on the forums and couldn't find the answer to this, so apologies if its already been asked and answered........

I've only had the car just over 2 weeks (07 Elegance) and just been away on holiday to the highlands with it.

When driving on single track roads, sometimes when I had to stop in a passing place when I moved off the clutch appeared to slip and the next gearchange thumped instead of the usual seamless change. This has continued since I got home and its a bit disconcerting when trying to get out of a junction fast. It doesn't do it every time either so I bet when I go to the dealer it'll behave itself.........

This is the second Octavia I've had with this engine and gearbox combo and didn't have anything like this with the last one.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanx

Neil

I have the thump issue, but only now and then when I'm in heavy traffic and have to do a off power/on power type thing whilst some fool messes about in front of me. I think when I apply the power the DSG is either mid change or it has to do a quick rechange and it engages drive a bit quick. But never after I've come to a complete stop then moving away again.

But there is another problem we've encountered a few times. After a long steady cruise on a motorwary there is a colossal clunk either on coming to a stop or pulling away from one. The first time it happened we all thought someone had run into the back of us.

Our local (Canterbury) garage say it's all news to them and there are no error codes to be seen.

But it has happened several times. My best guess is that the logic is faulty and tries to engage both even and odd-numbered gears at once - result, loud bang.

Anyone else?

Doesn't sound normal to me. I've recently been test driving a lot of DSG cars, the most recent of which were the Touran and the Eos. Both cars has 2.0TDi engines and 6-speed DSG.

Neither of them did any of the things you are describing, although I did think that the gearbox was slightly smoother in the Eos than the Touran. Definitely, no clunks or bangs, though.

The thing that makes me most suspicious is the fact that it doesn't do it all the time. If this were 'normal', you'd expect it to be consistent. It's not, so therefore, something is going wrong, either in the software that controls the box, or in the hardware being controlled.

Has it always done it?

If not, when did it first start? Did anything different, or unusual happen at the same time?

Could you get in contact with the previous owner, and see if they had the same problems?

I think I recently read on the forum that some people have been having clutches changed in the gearbox, due to clunky changes. Could this be a different aspect to the same problem?

I'd keep pestering the dealer and get them to investigate more fully.

Bagpuss.

It's booked in for them to look at it on Thursday.

And as expected - today it hasn't done it!!!!!

I'll let you know what the outcome is - maybe I'll need to use the 30 day exchange........

Have had my 2.0 TDI DSG since February this year and covered 6k now with no issue like this. I'd say it is an intermittent problem with the clutch plates. I agree with what Bagpuss says, it should be consistent and consistently smooth at that.

So here's the story so far..........

Called the dealer at 4.20 - you can come and collect it, it needs a new flywheel - it'll be OK to drive and we'll get it back next week to do the flywheel.

So, on the way home, give it some beans and it gets stuck in 3rd gear, the selector indicator in the dash starts flashing and I can't even get it to change in tiptronic. Get home, after being stuck in first and no reverse, call the garage who tell me to call the RAC, but to bring the car back and they'll give me a courtesy car until it's fixed.

The RAC come out, and of course it's behaving itself but he tells me to take it to the dealer, so I've got myself a nice Fabia TDi in the meantime!

Latest update - they've replaced the flywheel and theres still something wrong with the gearbox.

They want to trailer the car to an gearbox specialist so they can see what its like before trailering it back, removing the gearbox and taking the gearbox back to the specialist who will fix it, send it back and they will refit it to my car and all problems will be solved..............

This will take at least a week and a half during which I can run the Fabia they have lent me.

I told them that as it was a only a year old and has now had a flywheel replacement and a gearbox fault I would like to exchange it under the 30 day exchange scheme.

They've never done an exchange before so they will get back to me tomorrow.

Has anyone done an exchange?

I'll post an update when I know some more.

Looks like Lummox was right then.

If it was me, I'd have asked the question:

How does a duff flywheel explain how why it got stuck in 3rd gear with the selector indicator in the dash flashing and a failure to change in tiptronic?

Answer, it doesn't.

Get it exchanged. Sounds like a bit of a lemon to me.

If you can't exchange, I'd certainly be pushing for a new gearbox.

Its odd how they would want to send the box away. As far as I know with DSG you can change the mechtronic unit pretty easily, also the clutch pack and the seals. If its any more than that its an exchange gearbox anyway. A faulty mechatronic unit shoud be diagnosed via guided fault finding anyhow, and if it isnt that put a new box in, simple as.

update on the exchange - only car they can find the same as the duff one is a satin grey one thats also an ex-hire care so I declined the offer.

"Don't worry, we'll find you a suitable car" and then told me they still had my trade in.......

I'm half tempted to take my old car and my cash back.

I have had a pretty positive experience so far witht the DSG but second gear for me is a bit rough on the change especially going down into 2, the best way to describe it would be its like being a learner and letting off the clutch too fast, and if it is in second and I change speed it is a bit "hoppy" sorry for all of technical terms. Oh and when I have been driving quickly it is better, when i drive like a grandpa it gets worse. I am hoping my impending remap might help.

Todays update - Skoda has told the dealer to put a new 'box onto the car - however, I still don't want to take it back.

Dealer is now saying 'I can't magic another car out of nowhere', but you could have your old car back.

Told him to go away and work out his best price to get a new one........

As soon as I know any more, I'll post it!

Another update - the dealer obviously thinks my head buttons up the back - if I decide not to take this duffer of an Octavia back and take a new one, the extra I'll have to stump up is £4700!!!!!!!

They must think no-one has internet access or reads motoring mags - they've overlooked the free spec upgrade so I should only pay for an Ambiente instead of Elegance which if I've done the maths right should only be £3300 which is still way off what I think is reasonable.

Any comments welcome!

if Skoda say put a new box in then I'd let the dealer do that and try it again - I had to have a new engine/turbo/intercooler/exhaust on my car after only 2000 miles and 3 months of ownership... I've now logged another 24,000 miles on it and it's terrific

I agree, let them fit a new box and take the car back. It won't cost you anything and you'll still have your warranty if anything further crops up.

I've been in a similar position before with a Rover and understand your concern, but give the dealer and the car a chance. The Rover required a new roof after 2 years old!!

For the moment it's the end of Skoda ownership for me.

I was prepared to take my old car back but they had sold it so refunded me the whole amount and were really good about it - hats off to them.

I've no idea what I'm going to get next, but the money will burn a hole in my pocket till it's spent!
