fuel light lottery

Featured Replies

How low do you let your "miles left" in a tank go? I go down to ten KM then run it for a day before filling up......what about anybody else and how long have you left it before you panic and fill up?

K

I tend to fill up before the light has chance to come on, due to a very annoying time when the fuel light came on on my 1.9SDI fabia and then 8 miles later it ran out of fuel...

I don't have a 'miles left' indicator anymore so I tend to fill up at the first opportunity when the light comes on. Although it came on this morning and I've done 20miles since

normally when the light comes on im at the nearest station

i see nobody is willing to risk running out of juice in a diesel!!!.....think id best fill up on the way home then!! but surely somebody is willing to push it!!

k:)

The petrol is supposed to come on when you have 60kms left, however, mine is irregular. Sometimes it comes on at 80 or 70 or 60. Seems to be dependent on the ambient temperature. Do diesels still have to be primed if they run out of fuel?

I run to zero on the miles left, zero the trip and ussually do another 10 miles as long as I'm in a familiar area.

i only ran mine on 0 miles once!!...i was miles from a station and panic began to set in!!...but then realised the run home was all down hill....phew!!

k:)

Closest I've come in 5miles left on the range, but know of others who've driven along with 0 showing. Don't think I'm that brave :)

I have run 30 miles past Zero, from my mates to my house then filled up. I did tickle it for all of those 30 miles though.

I dont think (stand to be corrected) that it is as big a drama running out of diesel in the PD engine due to the high fuel pressures involved too.

Usually comes on with 60-70 miles left... but obviously it depends how you drive as it can go down fast! I fill up as soon as is convenient after the light comes on.

I try to fill up before the light comes on as I hate the very loud beep it makes every time I start up.

When I have let it run into the red though, the trip computer seems to be pretty accurate, I've let it run as far as 5-miles remaining and no coughing or spluttering, even going up hill.

I did about 30miles after zero, started to get worried then so filled up. Seemed to be still pulling well though!!!:)

i normally fill up between 1/4 n half a tank left

i've ran it to zero miles before, after about half a mile i slowed down and it creeped back up to 5 miles.

closest i've ever come to panicing would be when it was showing 10 miles and i couldnt find a station that was open and i was 20miles away from the next major town.

Have ran mine on 0 to go for 20 miles. It was abroad which was a bit worrying. Seems the French don't like petrol stations, and I ended up going all the way from Dunkerque to 15 miles inside Belgium on "not a lot"

I'm on 20 to go at the moment. Nipping out later for a social so shall probably drop into a Tesco I know I'm passing on the way. No worries.

Yes, I've notice the French like to space the fuel stations out as well. Had a few times last year driving around trying to find one!

Steve

I've had mine cough and splutter a bit on bisk cornering with 30 miles left showing.

Does it also seem that after youve filled it up it somehow feels smoother and quicker!!?....or is that just me??:)

mine also says 10 km then all of a sudden its down to 0!! and the panic really sets in!!:(

k:)

I've run mine to 0 miles once....I tend to fill up when it hits 40miles remaining.

10 miles on mine. I've run dry before in my previous car during one fuel scare/panic buying session or another a few years ago and I'd just managed to crawl to work and found all the petrol stations out of fuel!!

I did about 10 miles after the trip comp said i had 0 left recently, was doing a long journey and didn't wanna use motorway services, managed to get to my local station with the trip meter showing 0 miles just before i got there, and then it being a shell during the strike they had no diesel :( So had to drive another 10 miles cross country to the next nearest, thank god they had fuel lol

Often run to 0 as i use my tom tom to see if i can get away from motorways before filling up, have a phobia of services...

This is for genuine reasons. Most of the diesel that goes into the engine, comes back out again and fed back to the tank through a return pipe. The fuel gets quite warm in this process, hence the fuel cooler under the car. The less fuel in the tank, the less this warm returned fuel gets to mix with colder fuel already there, and so it gets put back in again quicker, whilst still warm. I would never do drag racing, or a trackday with less than half a tank as the benefits of cooler fuel outweigh the benefits of the few kilos saved in weight. :)

PS: 5 miles to go when I filled up earlier. Got 45 litres in (after it clicked first at 43 litres) : £59.00! :(

i did for the second time at the weekend knowing that you can do about 50 miles on 0. on way back from the lakes was coming onto the M40 from the M42 and drove all the way down to Oxford where i got a full tank, about 58 litres nearly £80 of fuel too (vpower) the main reason was the first two stops on the sat nav on the M6 for vpower ended up being bp garages so i just kept going. if i hadnt gone on the morning drive out i would have eaily had enough fuel for work this week too.

I just played the fuel light lotto..... and lost! :o

It appears that when my trip comp says i've got 40 miles left to go, it actually means; it's got f@ck all left, you better have some comfy walking shoes on!

So, am i going to have any trouble getting it going again? Do you have to prime it like you did in the past or are modern diesels a bit less finicky?
