Went to Jabba yesterday.....

.....and got me custom map done.

All I can say is :D:D:D:D

After leaving it with them for a god few hours (walked round the garden centre over the road) and then coming back, watching the Fast and the Furious on DVD (yawn) for a bit my car was done.

Started off a little low on power apparently- 126bhp according to the rollers wheras they're usually about 135 according to the chap that did it. Gotta say it did feel a little flat recently - very temperature sensitive too in warm weather.

I asked for a nice smooth and most of all component friendly map. I didn't want my little KKK, my clutch or my flywheel going pop (our lass is getting the car after me so it needs to be reliable as she's insane behind the wheel ). So, I asked for all the changes to be done well within the tolerances of the standard bits.

Chap there (can't remember his name) that did the map listened to my requests and updated me afterwards.

He got it up to 168bhp without adding much extra boost at all but at that point it started smoking a little apparently and so to avoid upping the boost much more he backed it off a little to 160bhp. Torque was 298ft/lb which he says is within the tolerances of the standard clutch. I was a little disappointed at this at first as the figures seemed low, but he said that the extra 10bhp would've just been peaky - the power I had could be held throughout a wider rev band. Also, he said he'd completely removed the silly overboost that's present on the standard map. Gone are the days of all your torque being dumped in at 2k rpm with no power further up.

Anyway, my initial disappointment was completely gone when I took it out for a test run I have to say. The power comes in so gradually and smoothly its amazing. Started her up and it felt no different - pulled out onto the main road - still felt pretty much the same, but then I got into 3rd and gave it some beans and the thing went off like a scalded cat. Little bit of spool up and then the power started coming in, building and building as the revs increased (huge grin appeared on my face at this point :D).

The journey home was for the most part boring as the fecking A1 is nothing but speed cameras and roadworks at 50mph.....yawn. But, on the odd occasion the road cleared up I got the opportunity to familiarise myself with the newfound power characteristics of the engine.

Overtaking and swapping lanes is now so frighteningly easy. You choose - either drop it a cog to 5th and get instant go (lots of it) or stay in 6th, boot it and allow the power to build. Either way it copes effortlessly.

Slip roads now have me howling with laughter when I go up them as the car simply flies when you give it some.

Now, this all may seem run of the mill to you guys running mapped vRS's (and Hybrid ones etc) but coming from a standard car that was low on power anyway this is a revelation to me. The wonderfully broad spread of grunt that this thing has and the way it feeds it in past 2000 revs is lovely. It feels well within the cars capabilities and not 'overcooked'. The brakes cope ok, as does the chassis. Personally I think that this kind of power should have been on the vRS as standard.

Anyway, I'm going to look into getting a new MAF I think. The fact it was low on power at the start says to me that it could do with being replaced. Don't think they're too expensive. :)

Chris.

Great to hear !

And nothing wrong with "run of the mill" mods.

Now go and enjoy. :D

Drive it like a petrol.....clutch should last longer lol lol lol

I love me remap 2 lol

It's wierd, that's exactly how you end up driving it. :D

You drop and cog and give it some beans and it does actually respond to that now whereas before it didn't. Remaps rule.....

About time

Now get saving for the hybrid turbo :D

Then see how much fun slip roads are  130 leptons on the slip road at normanton M62 west bound

Told You, you needed a re-map :D Hows the fuel consumption?

I travel up the A1 everyday now so should in theroy see you one of these days

Glad your pleased with the map

Tis a brilliant feeling. Like a new car...again. Enjoy. Might see you on the A1 sometime.

Now get some proper brakes and you'll be sorted ;)

Thats a great review, If I go for a remap, thats a perfect description of what I want, component friendly. It sounds like your really pleased with it.

LOL. So far mpg remains about the same. Only driven it once to get a feel for that (the way back from Peterborough - been in London with work since) so I've yet to truly find out. Got slightly less mpg on the way back than the way there (61 mpg compared to 65 - you can't avoid crawling on the A1) but it was raining on the way back and a lot more of it is uphill.

One other thing, should you have a bit of oily grime under the bottom joint of the SMIC?

Just wondering if I have a slight boost leak. It's been like that for ages so it's not map related.

Great result hope you enjoy:thumbup:

Totally normal. :)

Mines standard and same.

Heh - I go up a certain stretch of the A1 most days (from the M62 up to the join of the M1) but I car share a lot now so I'm sometimes in a lowered blacked out Audi A4 Avant :D.

Brakes wise, the standard ones feel fine but again I've not driven it enough since to feel any inadequacies, yet.....

As I say, I'm still getting used to the number '160' rather than the 170 i was expecting, but all my concerns went when I first drove it. Also, from what they told me, 170 would have simply been a spiky peak on the graph - the 160 was far more sustainable as the charts seem to show. Nice wide power curve and minimal boost increases so KKK friendly.

go on grow a pair and ask for the most they can give.....its worth it:thumbup:

LOL - all well and good, till the psycho missus gets it after me. She currently burns around in a breathless 306 HDi and ends up nearly getting into roadside fights in just that thing.

Not only that but she's a bugger for riding the clutch and for being in too low a gear for the revs. Combine those things with more power and the car wouldn't last 2 minutes and guess who's job it would be to pay for repairs.

Which one is he? Not sure who's who....

I had the older chap - has a high voice.

100% normal mate, thats the lowest point in the air intake system so any oil in there (gets there by being blown up through the CCV pipe into the TIP then throught the cold side of the turbo and into the intercooler) settles at this joint.

When the engines running and theres pressure in the pipes the seals are tigth and dont leak, but when the engine is off the seals relax and weak oil a little.

I wouldnt worry about it tbh normal behaviour.

Audi avant ill keep and eye up

Cool, thanks mate. I'll look into getting a new MAF for it I think. Should hopefully restore a few ponies.

Keep an eye out for a black Avant, lowered, big wheels, blacked out rear windows with a little beardy chap with sunglasses behind the wheel - that's one of my colleagues. ;)

thats him,i think he does most of the mapping:thumbup:
