How much more life is in the Defender?

Featured Replies

Keep seeing loads of new Defenders, which look little different to a 70's version. Not to mention that they first appeared in the late 30's!

Will we be seeing a 100th anniversary version?

I hope so.. i have a real soft spot for the defender. They are immensly cool imo!

Defenders are the definative 4wd off roader. No frill, no pretence, they do the job. I too hope we see a 100 yr edition :)

Defenders are fantastic. I did loads of off-roading in my last job and this was by far the best thing i used. Came very close to buying one last year but the maintenance costs put me off. Still considering it though! Haven't driven the new TD4 but i've heard it's excellent.

Would love to see a 100yr edition.

Got to admit the defender lives up to the best 4x4 by far tag line from Land Rover, very dependble and trusty workhorse the local park rangers have one and it was in action today I think getting somebody who had fell over the edge.

In my offroad experience, the only things not stopped by mud are Defender and Octy1!! Everything else has needed a tow. The Range Rovers are pants in mud, too heavy.

the original landies came out in 1948 so its their 60th this year....

It will be a sad day if they ever do stop making them , they are my favourite 4x4 , in fact probably the only 4x4 I'd ever want to own!

The newer ones are no where near as reliable as the earlier ones. We have one at work and it spends quiet a lot of time at the dealers being fixed. Last time the transfer box went, before that the heater, the list goes on.

Fuel economy is not that great either, just 25MPG from the diesel.

They need to get some quality control back, and improve the dealers customer service.

Within my company car allowance I think I could just there budget for a SWB Commercial Defender, if most of my journeys weren't motorway i'd have one in a shot! Cheaper tax too but it would just be too uncomfortable for the driving I do :(

They may be no frill, but they're not that cheap - £19-28k list price

We currently own a 52 plate one with 85k on the clock and it's been no bother what so ever ! just looking into buying one of these new transit engined ones now with the 6 gears  oohh owww

They are the best by far :D

Isnt this for punters to buy?

The landies were around in WW2 alongside the willis jeeps.

Nah. 1948. Built from aluminuim panels because of the steel shortages post-war.

The Jeep was inspiration for it.

Given half the chance i would have a LR 90. having had a Disco i know there are slight how shell we say "Problems" with there reliability. But that is all part of the owning thing.

All 90's and 110's leak, but that is due to there chassis flexing, which helps there off road capability's. If they didn't flex they would crack the chassis.

But if you get a std one, just don't start looking in the options list.

Got taught off-road driving in a chipped one of them - in fact, the one at the front of this convoy:

Cool... shame the production version couldn't be closer to the real thing though.. clicky..:D

The 'Defender' didn't appear until ~1990, when they decided it needed a name when they brought out the Discovery.

BUT, its the same design as the 90/110 which replaced the Series III in ~1981.

And it won't be made after 2012/15? when EU safety/emmission laws make it impossible to sell. They're already working on its replacement.

Must admit I wondered about these as I walked past a dealers about a month ago full of the things. All at ridiculous prices :D

I had a drive on an old 110 and it was fantastic, so basic yet it did everything you needed it todo and was a great workhorse for all the camping/climbing/canoeing/rowing equipment that used to get chucked in it not to mention using it for launching pulling and sailboats off ramps into the river and sea.

Saw a 60th Anniversary model on TV last night (Fifth Gear?).

Leather Recaros amonst other things IIRC!

I have had two Freelanders (1.8 petrol & TD4) loved them to bits and had a TD5 Discovery , apparently not the most reliable motor but to be honest i couldnt fault them ,

Saw the new Defender on 5th gear last night , well nice

Defender has had it's day IMHO. It's over priced and under performing when compaired to modern alternatives.
