Suspension Advice

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Looking to firm up/improve the handling on my Octavia VRS but looking for advice from you knowledgable lot as to which are the best and most cost effective ways to make the car go round corners as quick as it goes in a straight line, and generally get it to be less 'wallowly' around the twisty stuff.

I have changed the Front ARB's for poly items this week as the OE items had gone, what to do next guys?? :)

Thanks for reading!

I take it you've had the front Anti Roll Bar bushes changed and not the whole ARB?

To stop the wallowing all you need is a rear ARB and this is the best bang for the buck upgrade on the Octy. After that suspension for most is dictated by how much you want to spend. - I'd recomend the KW Variant 3 coilovers but not many people want to spend over a £1000 on a suspension kit.

Koni FSD dampers and H&R springs get good reviews and are a much cheaper option. They have been discused on here recently.

Yeah, just changed the bushes and not the ARB in this instance as money is tight for a couple of months!

What is the average costs for the parts on the rear ARB upgrade, and is it possible to DIY as i will try my hand to anything rather than pay over the odds on labour rates!? :)

Yeah rear ARB is a DIY job for anyone with a bit of mechanical know how. Prices range from around £150 for a whiteline ARB upto £220 for the stronger Neuspeed bars. I've not heard anyone say they are not worth every penny. The best mod by far.

cheers mate, finally can you recommend a good supplier as coming from jap motors to VAG i'm a bit lost on the best peeps to talk to!

Oh, do they supply uprated bushes with the ARB also, or is it worth getting poly's on whilst changing the bar??

Thanks again

I got my neuspeed rear ARB from Awesome GTI who sponser on this site. Not sure where is best to get a whiteline arb from.

The Octy does not have an arb as such on the rear so there are no bushes to upgrade. The rear beam has some sort of bar in but this can't be removed and does very little. You just leave that alone and follow the instructions with the kit, they normally clamp to the rear beam and then attatch the the bottom of the rear dampers with longer bolts via droplinks. The arbs come as a compleate kit with everything you need - in the case of the neuspeed ones this includes polly bushes.

Just want to double check you've got a mark 1 VRS and not the new Mark 2 as these have a very different rear end. I assumed you have a MK1.

A good choice is Weitec, cheaper than KW and the same quality...

Weitec's are basically KW variant 1's. (The cheapest coilover in the KW range). Especially seeing as the Weitecs are made my KW themselves. They can not be compared to the fully adjustable Variant 3's. Plus they are not made from INOX stainless steel which does not rust which all KW variants come in.

Don't get me wrong Weitec coilovers are very good but you can't say they are the same quality as KW's!

yes mate, it's a Octy 1. last question i promise, which bar is required, the 25 or 29mm??

I've not seen a 29mm one before. Mine is 28mm but it really depends what your after. 25mm will still give a fantastic improvement.

I can't really advise on this as I have only ever used the 28mm but I love it.
