Horrid Accident

Featured Replies

The barriers aren't designed for trucks hitting them at such an large angle (looks to be nearly 45 deg) - lets face it nothing is going to stop a rig that big at that speed. Horrific how it happens totally out of the blue...

Armaco wont stop trucks, the wire systems are meant to catch the axle and sort of hold the truck but not that great, hence concrete barriers are being used more and more which do prevent truck cross over but are more dangerous to cars which hit them.

I dunno why but I keep thinking that looks like truck driver suicide

I'm with you on that one

Awful :(

Holy S*&t. Never seen anything like that.

I'd guess the armco then a space with concrete in between isn't really an option .

ive been on that road some years ago when i went to venice......

Terrible. Agree on the angle of impact. The armco didn't really stand a chance.

On the Firefox issue, you need the Windows Media Player plug-in. The page should load, with the video component missing and invite you to install the plug-in. Just follow the steps and download it

Steve

Does your media player still work from IE?

All my links to vids in IE get a 404 error page.

oh.....my.....god......

Something fishy there. Looks like a deliberate hard left turn to me.

It'll be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation.

Incidently I was once on a bus travelling at 40mph out of Huddersfield when the whole front offside wheel come off and rolled off in front of us - out of sight down the middle of the road with vehicles trying to get out its way. The bus fell down to it chassis and ground to a halt in a straight line - apart from the big bang and thud it was rather undramatic - didnt swerve all over the place or burst into flames - makes me kinda suspicious of this tragic event.

A bus and a 40T artic are two very different vehicles though.

Even a front blowout should not cause the truck to suddenly veer off at such an angle though.

Damn, I wondered why the bus had no seats or windows and was full of boxes of pickles. :P, but thats Yorkshire for yer !

Shows how fragile life is when something like that happens.

None of them stood a chance.

Luckiest guy on the planet was the driver of the van even though he had a bit of a roll.

Shocking stuff.

Big, yes. Fiery, certainly. Interesting how?

That's "interesting" as opposed to interesting. As in oops big and fiery.

Thought that myself too

Thats terrifying stuff! :(

Looks deliberate to be - notice how the truck moves toward and tracks his nearside (Left hand) lane marker, before the swerve - as if he has trying to get the best view of who was coming up behind him on the nearside. Looks like he just grabbed a "Bl**dy" great handful of left vector and put his foot down.

I would of thought that if he had a heart attack, the drivers grip would lessen and, assuming that trucks have self-centering steering like cars, the truck would have just wandered a bit. He must have put his foot down as he swerved to get the force to plough through the armco.

Suicide or terrorist ?

Nick

Trucks have speed limiters (set at 56mph) so that wouldn't apply. Any 40T truck traveling at 56mph would and did make mincemeat out of an Armco barrier when hit at 45 degrees.

Torque, not speed.

Nick

Torque, not speed.

Nick

Still irrelevant though, as 'putting your foot down' will do nothing, when a speed limiter kicks in thats it, there is nothing else available.

But having ones foot to the floor will have some effect once you come up against increased resistance to forward motion.

But having ones foot to the floor will have some effect once your speed begins to drop.

Agreed ;)
