The dividing barrier certainly had no effect on the artic, thought they were meant to be tested to throw things like this back into there own lane:(

Watching the video clip it was lucky the death toll was not higher, condolencies to the families.

(AGI) - Venice, 8 August - The balance of victims continues to grow for the accident that occurred this afternoon on A4 Venice-Trieste between San Donà and Cessalto. The deceased have risen to 8 after 5 initial victims. This was confirmed by the Padua Highway Police. The accident occurred just after 3pm.

According to a reconstruction of the incident by Highway Police, a rig coming from Venice at the Cessalto exit (near Treviso) crossed into oncoming traffic flying into a vehicle that was passing another rig which crashing into the truck. The incredible course of the truck crashed into a Bmw as well.

Unstoppable after the collision and the pile up, the fire from the vehicles and trucks provoked an authentic hell on the highway with traffic blocked in both directions causing back ups of 7 kilometers towards Venice and Trieste.

It must have been a blowout or maybe steering component failure. I cannot see anything else causing such an extreme change of direction.

Pretty horrific though. :( I wonder if Italian central reserve barriers are less effective than ours?

I dunno why but I keep thinking that looks like truck driver suicide, too much Air crash investigation watching last night I think.

The barriers aren't designed for trucks hitting them at such an large angle (looks to be nearly 45 deg) - lets face it nothing is going to stop a rig that big at that speed. Horrific how it happens totally out of the blue...

Terrible. Agree on the angle of impact. The armco didn't really stand a chance.

On the Firefox issue, you need the Windows Media Player plug-in. The page should load, with the video component missing and invite you to install the plug-in. Just follow the steps and download it
