Is modifying hub caps chavvy. pls advise!

Featured Replies

Finally solved the problem of the glue under my side strips today:). I removed them about 2 weeks ago  and have been trying loads of different things to try and get the glue off. Have tried WD40, hair drier, acetone, tar and bug remover, credit cards etc etc. after all of which i had still only managed to get about 1/8th off!

After looking on detailing world i ordered a rubber wheel drill attachment which blasted through it in about 1/2 an hour. Not sure whether it was because the glue had hardened with age (2000 reg) but mine was no-where near as easy to get off as some people's!

Anyway, having got the glue off, my car was now covered in rubber bits from the drill! So i gave it a good clean. Nothing too excessive (my weekends are already short enough) but it's a bit more shiney now anyway. While i was doing this I noticed that my two offside hubcaps were quite scratched so i decided to take them off to see what could be done about repairing them. Now, i know this may sound a little chavvy, but i quite like the look of the car with the black wheel, blue paint combo. So I just thought I'd ask you guys what you thought. See pics below.

My options are:

1. to repair hubcaps and put back on as originally intended, in silver (not sure how to do this, any ideas?)

2. To keep off for that motorway look

3. repray black! Not sure if this would look a bit channy, especially on a 1.4 mpi! but the colours do suit.

(4. have thought about alloys but unless i find a cheap pair I can't really afford it.)

Just wondered what you guys thought - anyone heard of this being done/think it's worth it?

Thanks, t

get some standard replacements or get alloys

Just leave the ones with pink inserts alone :)

Get your black rims powdercoated, either in black or in the same colour as your car.

im not sure a man with that much chrome should be giving styling advice....

I might have some 15" alloys for sale soon?!:P

To be different I would probably buy about 6 cans of the same blue as your car and spray the steels. :D

I've seen it done.

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with black steels; can look quite good.

Steels seem to be gettin more popular - get em powdercoated

Do this

I'm not sure a man with a nick that sounds like a German war hero should be making any kind of remarks of a personal nature. :finger:

Black steels with a blue insert would look good on your car mate.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I'll leave the hubs off for a while while i repair the others, to see how the balck takes me. May end up spraying or just leaving off.

Any ideas how to repair scratches on hub caps? wet and dry then respray myself?

Don't forget the vRS stickers - they look good and are a POC to fit.....

i think you should get the steelies banded then painted black,8" wide steels are uber cool, then lower the car and you have a rea impact for not a lot of cash:thumbup:
