Fan continuing after engine stop?

Featured Replies

Noticed lately that there's a fan going on for 10 seconds or so a the front of the car after the engine has stopped.

It sounds like a high speed "whoosh", it's coming from the nose area around the radiator.

I'd guess that it's a cooling fan going on for some time, but:

  • The car's not been raced just driven gently
  • The climatronic isn't set that low
  • Engine temp is normal at all times
  • No warning lights on the dash
  • It doesn't always do it
  • It's the petrol VRS, climatronic set to 17.5/19 in the car

I've never noticed it doing this before, neither has SWMBO. Anyone else get this or is it just me?

i beleive mine does this when its hot, cant say ive taken much notice but will listen over the coming days.

Mine does it a lot, always has, so assume its not an issue - may be to do with the AC, but not sure

cheers guys I'm going to pop the bonnet and have a look which fan it is next time I stop. I'll have to pop the bonnet before keying the ignition off to have a look.

I guess they all do that. When coming out of the car after having had the aircon on I can still hear the fans revving down. Spectacular sound, makes it sound more important than the 115 ponies under the bonnet.

Imagine a Cayenne turbo revving down, with 6 radiators and the necessary fans :) It's like a small jet throttling down.

My car did this the other day after I got the 15 miles home from work in 9 minutes. Quite a high average speed...

Mine does this too.

mine's done this once..jumped back in, started the engine, switched off, and off it went..no probs since ..................

mine does it, both fans, pretty certain it isnt a problem

Just as a pointer, turbo engines work that much hotter than normally aspirated and will need the fan on a little longer in order to cool down. I always warm the engine up before moving and when I arrive, to aid all cooling within the engine, keeps the oil moving around the turbo.

I always warm the engine up before moving

Bad idea - I think you're much better driving off straight away but being gentle until it's warmed up.

and when I arrive, to aid all cooling within the engine, keeps the oil moving around the turbo.

Good idea.

My Felicia also does this sometimes

The cooling fan stays on if its kicked in prior to the engine being turned off or can kick off just after switching the engine off.

I have never noticed mine come on in all the times I have driven it..........

Will have to get it good and hot to ensure it works....

It's normal, all cars do it.

... erm was this in Germany?!

Last time I checked there were 60 mins in an hour, so you travelled at:

60/9 * 15 = 100 mph AVERAGE over 15 miles

Which is high enough in itself, but generally a fast run will have a 120%-130% MAX speed, so you peaked at over 120-130 mph

... or did you have the blue lights on?

As you are moving, air is channelled into the engine bay to stop the engine overheating (also to cool down the coolant in the radiator). Obviously when you stop moving the engine is still producing heat so the fan comes on to force air through and continue to keep the engine running at optimum temperature. When you turn the engine off there is still heat build up from the last few seconds of running so the fan comes on to cool it down slightly to prevent heat damage and to help disperse excess heat. All cars do this.
