Lupo GTI

Featured Replies

Hello!

Currently I'm running a Furby Elegance 16v/100. It's been with me for 2 years and as much as I've loved it It's been an attention seeking little brat! Somethings gone wrong (ranging from free to £900 to put right) every 4 months... and more often over £300 then under,

as a result... lost all faith in "Arp'y" now :-(

Last straw (and currently) is very difficult starting followed by limp mode and the engine management light. Mech has a quick look the other day before resetting the errors codes.. apparently two of the injectors are reading error codes but he doesn't think it's actually the result of faulty injectors, but more a bad cennection as it only happens after standing in heavy rain!.. Wooo.. Bring on winter!..either way, once it's fixed... it's going!

So, 4 - 5k to spend and want something that's coverd under 50k. and something a lil quicker and the AUB 100bhp is tottaly lacking in the lower end torque thanks to it's fly by wire accelerator alowing the computer to control your curve for the good of the earth!

Wanna Lupo GTI.. can't afford a young enougth VRS (obviously it was on the list).. thought's on anything above.. anyone driven, had a lupo GTi? is the boot Really that in practical?

Thanks

Rob.

WOuldnt fit my buggy in the boot of one if that helps? Gorgeous lookin little things tho - I wouldnt turn my nose up at the one I saw a few weeks back at a meet, happy owner too

I Feel I should say... I Have nothing agaisn't Saving the earth.. just mad at my car at the minute.. I'll be sad to say good bye but I just don't wanna sit back and wait for the next thing to break! :-(

Not bad cars but I have heard like the Polo GTI's it likes to eat gearboxes and clutches.

We have a Lupo Sport 16v- so 1400 100BHP rather than the GTI's 125BHP. It's a second car, and fine for that.

It's quite a nice car, and fairly quick, but the boot is a joke! A couple of bags of shopping only. Seat room is OK though. The 1.4 engine we have is very similar to your Fabia's, but a Lupo weighs less. Handling is OK but a bit wallowy, compared to my vRS, though the crap tyres on it don't help.

Bear in mind our Lupo is very low mileage but has still done 42K- it's a 2000 W plate- many will have done more. Lupos are a few years old now, and GTIs are sought after. They have their faults too, but at least the GTI won't have the heavy cable clutch and pedal box problems.

We've had very few problems: One throttle body alignment, one window switch, and a clutch cable.

Head on over to Club Lupo and have a look about.

Thanks Mate :-D

I do appreciate that all cars have thier problems. but mines had a

new PAS pump & sensor - 900

all the bushes replaced on the front and a suspension re-build after it was found to be assembeld incorrectly - 500

coolent sensor - 20

brake pedal sensor - 15

Water in rear footwell (traced to rear wash wipe pipe popping apart) - 00

cable came loose for alternator and got sliced on rad fans! - 40

Now a problematic starter that in worse case mech thinks is faulty computer!

And that's just the things that I wouldn't have expectd. I've chnaged the belt and all 4 tyres with in the last two years. Oh, and (I know nothing to do with the car) got hit by half a brick on the M4.. result, drivers doors a bit of a mess and rear drivers side passenger window badly scuffed.

Bout the only "known" fualts I've not had are back door seals and piston rings.. but I'm sure if i holf on to it They'll join the club to!

I know it's not all bad or huge, but it's just been persistant! It's just clocked 71k on a Y plate.

From looking around, you can get a Lupo GTI with less than 50k on an 01/02 plate for between 4500 and 5000. It's an attractive idea! :-)

Thanks everyone!

I heard the Lupo GTi's came with 6 speed boxes later in life which is cool, there nice little cars i think all be it a little girly.

I certainly hope the gearboxes and clutches are stronger than the polo gti's because there aweful - lol

All Lupo GTIs are 6 speed, I think, and they'll probably have the same engines and boxes as the Polo, as they are very similar mechanically. There's nothing girly about the GTI's performance....our sport is respectable.

The 16v sport gearboxes also have a reputation for being weak, but we've had no problems/unpleasant noises so far.

If its a 6 speed it can't possibly have the same box in it. Although the engines put out the same BHP so i'd assume they'd be the same, i meant girly as in looking :)

Is the Polo GTI only 5 speed then?

That's what I thought. Yes, they are a bit cute & girly looking. "Ours" is really "my wife's", and it's bright yellow with the cartoon cat and mouse trim .

We bothe actually really like it.

Yip Polo gti is 5 speed.

Think you should start a thread over on Edition 38 or something bud as they will know better over there :)

Old style Yaris T-sport? 105nhp, but quite a light car. Drives like a go cart. Toyota reliability. And onto the boot........... It's got a sliding rear seat. Pusing it forward gives a sensible size boot (but would criple any adults in the rear) and sliding back gives very good leg room in the rear. Only gripe is the 5 speed box which means it revs high on the M'way, and isn't as econmical as you'd expect for a 1.5l. Great around town or on country roads though.

What can I say?

I love the Lupo GTI!

The boots are supprisingly spacious, too :)

No I love the Lupo GTI!

It's got a lot more character than the polo Gti IMO.

I love lil' Lupos! I couldn't be without my vRS tho, so I'm in the process of convincing the mrs she needs to get a GTi! Saw a stunning Silver one of the other day lowering onto some deep dish black wheels. Looked ace.

Driving the two, i have to say that GTI is more "work" to have fun in, but it's ultimately more enjoyable. You do have to wind it up to get the power out of it and I find that this makes it feel slower (even though, on paper, it's not) than the VRS does in day to day driving.

However, on those occasions when I head up into the hills for some fun, it's always the GTI that comes with me...

Boring factual stuff: All except the early GTIs have a 6 speed box and, compared with the chocolate 5 speed box on the early Lupos and all 6N2 Polo GTIs, it's solid (although there have been a few failures and boxes are no longer available from VW).

The cars are mechanically solid, but if you are buying one look for accident damage. I saw several with rebuilt rear arches as they are tremendously "skittish" when braking hard as all the weight's at the front. You also *never* want to crash one due to all the aluminium panels (this also makes the doors somewhat prone to car park dings, I find).

Tuning wise, it's a high-compression engine so there's not a lot that can be done to it. ITBS have been added by some, and there's always talk of turbos, but I've never seen anyone pull it off. You can actually get more power (c. 170bhp) by supercharging the 100hp 1.4 engine in the Sport model. 288mm brake upgrade is common and easy and most people seem to love "slamming" them, I believe it's called.

Mine is an 02 and a lot of that age are finding the rear shocks are failing, but that's fair enough. I've had a couple of breakdowns in mine, but that's just because it's not used regularly. I did 1002 miles in it last year at a cost of £2.44 per mile!!!!! That last figure tells you how much I love it and how good a car it really is.

What can I say?

your lucky not to be on the end of some jealous vandalism..

hope it never happens

You can get lupos in 5 and 6 speed boxes. The gearboxes are like chocolate though, my mate had a 100bhp lupo sport, then got a lupo gti and wished he had never sold the sport. With a bmc panel filter and coilovers and the centre section cut out the sport exhaust it sounded and went great. He liked the gti but didnt think it was worth the extra money, then he sold it and bought a fabia vrs which he hates and hes now looking back into getting a lupo gti. lol.

We have a Fabia vRS (mine) and a Lupo 16v Sport (wife's), and they are both great cars, but very different.

Why not get a Fabia TDI? 1.9L TDI 100Bhp? alot mroe torque than your current car and a Re-map will take it to the same power levels as a VRS.

I loved my Lupo GTi

Way more character than a Polo GTi and you see a lot less of them on the roads

Try www.clublupo.co.uk in the for sale section, usually some GTi's on there, and usually well looked after.

I had a 100bhp 1.4 16v Lupo first, and liked it that much I upgraded to the GTi.

Like a little go kart, so forget the Girly car comments and get one, so much fun!

Really spacious inside, but the boot is quite limited

Most have the 6spd box (early cars had 5spd), Xenons are standard, Leather is rare, climatronic is also rare although loads have normal a/c. 125bhp which in a tiny car makes for big smiles.

Get one, you wont be disappointed

Here was mine ( I still miss it :()
