Porsches

Featured Replies

Reading the thread about the trackday in a Porsche, got me looking at Autotrader secnd hand prices for a 911.

I was quite surprised to see various Porsche carreras '99 or '00, for less than £25K.

I've never been a Porsche expert and get quite confused about the model line up.

I'm guessing a carrera 2 is RWD, and a carrera 4 is 4WD?

So I've seen a tasty looking GT3 for £40K, what's that one then? (apart from being way beyond my reach)

I know there's a few Porsche owners on here. Which is the best model to go for? the 'S' models are more desirable for performance reasons, yes?

And is the tiptronic gear box any good?

I've got about two years to go before I can consider a 'new' car and I've started saving already. I'm considering either a brand new VW Scirocco, or throwing the cash towards a really decadent second hand performance car like an M3 CSL or Audi RS4, the likes of which we will never see again in a few years time. I didn't realise I was in 911 territory as well though.

i LOVE Porsches, especially the 911 models, seen a few really nice 993's on pistonheads, one was sitting at £75k but looks awesome, think it was supercharged into the bargain. 996's are pretty gay although the GT3 RS is sexual!

I love the Carrera’s, both 2 and 4 wheel drive. The Carrera S looks a bit like the turbo models with flared arches and uprated bits and bobs, but I think it loses some of the original prettiness of the basic car. Mind you any GT version would find a place outside my house  I much prefer them to Ferraris (excluding the Dino 246 which is the prettiest car in the world ever)

When I was young I used to hang around with a young guy who owned a 911 Turbo, 300bhp and it liked to spin on a sixpense in the wet!!!!:D

possibly the most expensive stock Porsche.

my dad had a Dino many moons ago, i didnt think that much of it to be honest but it was cool having a ferrari sitting in our drive.

I think that the GT 3 is a super fast and sexy 911 that has done well in racing. The GT2 is the ultimate nutter version with ridiculous amounts of power, less weight and the suspension of a house brick. I think they were originally produced for homologation reasons. I love watching people like Tiff and Mr. Rohl drive them at high speed. I don’t think I would trust myself behind the wheel of a GT2 though, I think I would kill it.

Who cares about its performance, it is a gorgeous looking car. I would have the Stratos if I wanted the racing version (also a great looker:thumbup:)

Oh Right. Lol. it's still 'only' a Carrera though, even if it has got a V10.:D

A brief run-down:

GT3 is 3.6, non-turbo, RWD.

GT2 is 3.6, turbo (twin setup in 997 guise IIRC) and RWD.

Turbo is 3.6, turbo'd ;) and 4WD

4 is 3.6, non-turbo, 4WD

4S is 3.8, non-turbo, 4WD

Carrera S is 3.8, non-turbo, 2WD

Carrera is 3.6, non-turbo, 2WD

This applies to the latest 997 line-up. I'd have to dig a bit for info on 993 and/or 996 varients. I've ignored the Targa and Cab, as they're for fairies! :gay: and I wouldn't bother with this Tiptronic business either. It's just not right in a 911.

I'd much rather go for something like this 2nd hand, rather than a newer 20-30k sports coupe. I much prefer the 993 shape to the 996, but like the latest 997 shape which seems to have combined them nicely.

Hopefully getting a run-out in a 997 Carrera 2S soon, which should be nice :D

Oh crap, I have a Porsche shaped bee in my bonnet now!

There is only one cure:)

I spent some time in my teens cramped up in one like this:

And earlier, in one like this:

The 2nd one was OK to sit in the back of, when you were 5! Oh and it was brown

993 Turbo and 1981 911SC Targa respectively. Both owned by my Aunty. Shame she never replaced the '95 Turbo. Think it scared her  - goodbye Stuttgart, hello Stuttgart - but an E-Class :thumbdwn:

I thought a 911 was a 911

Whats a 996 and all the rest

Just different 911 models, different numbers signify different evolutions of the shape.

Steve

But the modern engines are not air cooled :'(

I used to love Porsches, but then I worked for a family company in North Wales that all had Porsches and rooms named after porsches etc etc, now I can't get these wonkers out of my head every time I see a porsche .....

964 first generation Carrera2 and Carrera4 built in the 90's. Aircooled.

993 last generation aircooled 911.

996 first generation liquidcooled 911.

997 the actual generation 911, also liquidcooled.

It is indeed amazing at what becomes a contender once you start looking at 2nd hand prices. I had the Porsche bug for at least a few days when I realised what my budget could get me. Then I discovered the shiney new car with the flexible roof at the local car show
