Subscription camera databases

Featured Replies

Hi to All

The Talex system I currently use to spot scameras has decided that the original offer of free updates for the life of the detector are now to be charged annually. I also have a TomTom.

So the question is, would it be better to just use the Tomtom for the camera locations as well as navigation, or take the Talex subscription. Is Tomotoms camera database any good? Anyone compared it to Talex recently?

Chris

Tomtoms own camera database subscription is innacurate and woefull, much better is the pocketgpsworld database at £19 i think for a year, your tomtom can read out the speeds of the cameras as you near them, well worth it.

I'd expect a full refund on the Talex as they have changed the terms of the contract making the device useless to you. As such you should have suitable recompese, which since the device is useless would be the cost of the device, minus a small amount for use you have had.

Novus, give you it FOC if you want to try them,

here is my views from over the years. road angel, excellent on fixed locations, woeful on roadworks but no experience on mobile traps. pocketgps excellent on fixed even if some are up to 100 yds out, mobiles has most in place but locations again of these can be out. also the locations near me that ive reported 2 of the 10 i can name off the top of my head have been removed even through the 2 sites are still active, but im sure pocketgps have their reasons. Talex seems to be one of the best, cannot fault the fixed locations, has 99.9% of mobile locations in. occassionly i have found the odd one not in but a quick email soon has this resolved by the next update. Novus althrough free seems to be deleting alot of mobile traps and some locations coincidentally match the pocketgps one including the ones that are marked up to 100 yds away from the actual camera.

There isnt a system i could say is fault free or 100% accurate, but i guess it depends what you are really after and how much driving you do. personally i would recommend each one for the following.

road angel = not a bad unit but expensive on subs.

pocket gps= updates around every two to three weeks not a bad all rounder if you do the odd long journey and for the occasional holiday run.

novus=free but im concerned about the amount of mobile traps they have removed over the last 6 months.

Talex= updated weekly, most new locations added within a week, if not and you find one and report it then someone usually visits the site within that week and has it verified by the next update. certainly one i can recommend for high mileage drivers.

Not being rude Paul, but I'd have to question your impartiality these days as you have contacts within talex.

Try poiplace for free ;)

Updated instantly, so can do a nightly sync.

i have contacts with novus, but choose not to use them. just because you have a sore spot on your talex doesnt mean everyone else has. i still use novus occasionly, pocketgps some days and talex most days as it seems to be the better system for me.

above is MY OPINION of what i think of each one and i have posted the for reasons for each one so others can make a choice.

I use the pocketgpsworld camera DB for TT runing on my PPC.

cheers, what is the webby for that one?

I use the pocketgpsworld database for the TomTom Navigator on my Dell Axim PDA. Its saved me from accidental speeding fines several times. I really rate it - its very easy to download and install the regular updates (every few weeks).

POIplace

If you use tomtom on a PDA or mobile, then use Checkpoint (CheckPOInt for TomTom Navigator) to make life easier.

cheers:thumbup:

Yes and you are entitled to your opinion, I'm just saying you have on occasion posted up information that is quite biased in the favour of Talex. I'm not the only one that has a sore spot for them, you also used to have one too. The "integrated", "100% legal" laser detector that is just a stand alone unit that shares a juice supply is an example of the non truths that Talex (not you) put out.

At the time I bought the Talex, it was on a subscription basis. When Talex and Novus split, the Talex updates for existing subscribers were announced as free for life. Now all the dust has settled, the Talex device requires me to subscribe. No grounds for any refunds there. I only stopped getting free updates when I changed PCs, so I may just install the original Updater software and see what happens.

My experience with various systems:

Road Angel - good on fixed locations, very little on mobile sites and you should be travelling within the limit on raodworks anyway.

PocketGPS - I tried a selection from these guys on the Tomtom a few months ago. Seems OK, but not as comprehensive as the Talex.

Talex - So far the most comprehensive database I have seen, but they seem to have gone a bit weird with their often poorly judged marketing emails.

I have Tomtom and Talex hardware, so I suppose it comes down to which Tomtom POI overlay to use or stick with Talex? I have no intention of moving back to Road Angel (the system I had from them used to switch itself off on summer days due to overheating. Road Angel advised it should not be used in direct sunlight. Not great as it has to be mounted on the dashboard.

I use the camera database from PocketGPSWorld.com. It's updated at least once a month and has associated sound files for each of the different camera types so it announces the type of camera and speed limit when you approach a site. There are differing installation types.... I personally have the complete version that splits the sites into type and then speed limit. But you can select other options if you don't have enough space for all the extra POI files.

I'm not sure how much the subs are though as i have free lifetime membership for submitting a new site, (Another good incentive to go with this one in my opinion).

Cheers

Dave.

I'm another fan of the PocketGPSWorld.com camera database for my TomTom 720. Like Dave, I have a free lifetime subscription for submitting updated locations for cameras.
