Because a 14.7 1/4 time isnt good enough.. I went down to Santa Pod yesturday...

Featured Replies

Well I popped down to Santa Pod raceway for a few runs yesturday, weather was nice albiet a little warm at 22c. With my old set up of around 170bhp and 300lb.ft I ran in 2006 a 14.7 as my best, and generally always saw under 15 seconds which from what I can gather and seen, is very good! I then popped down earlier this year (GTI fest) however couldnt crack under 15.1 seconds, puzzled I ran a few more times to figure out if I was just lucky the first time I went to the pod, or if something was up, I figured out I was loosing around .4 of a second from my 2nd to 3rd gear change, it was clunking and wouldnt go smoothly in, soon after and racing "DanCupra" on a run, I heard a large crunch whilst trying to go into 3rd, and that was it gearbox had gone so slip diff in whilst it was being fixed!

However I went down yesturday with the intentions of trying to get back into the 14's and maybe hit 14.5 seconds, after all again looking at others running 220bhp++ they maybe couldnt get the power/torque down off the line. So here I go....

First run of the day

DSC01969.jpg

After my first run I had already cracked under 14.5 seconds, with a stonking 14.3

As I always do I then thought bugger this, lets try and get a few .10's of a second off!

So a few more runs and I did these :

Well as you can see I was most impressed! 14.1's! The 2nd be slightly quicker! lol. At this point a few others that whent down on the day all believed I had reached all the car could do in its current set up, running two 14.1's right next to each other. However me being me, I always had to try to go that little bit quicker, get that slightly better launch, that faster gear change, that less wheels spin, and better top speed. I wanted to crack the 13 seconds barrier, a unheard of feet for a TDi that I know of (dont brake my dream yet!) I however had to agree with the people around me, from what I could see my launch's were great, getting a 0-60ft in 2.2 seconds in a FWD car is damn good, esp with a torque monster of a diesel. There is only so fast you can change a gear, and I had to change 3 times to get over the line! So I figured the only way to shave .2 seconds off my time is to get rid of a gear change. So the challenge was set, I needed to break into the 13 seconds 1/4 times and to do this a 2nd gear launch was needed. So im sat at the side of a BMW 325 (nice chap btw) in 2nd gear, giving it some revs... well as you can see by the results, you can see what happened next!! Here :

DSC01972.jpg

Doh! I didnt give it enough revs, no where near enough revs, so as I bogged down in 2nd off boost (by around 1,000rpm!) the BMW shot off, however as you can see boost came back (the crowd could tell due to the bloom of black smoke out of the rear *which I now like to class as my own Death Race 2000 mod!* ) I clawed it back, just. So with a 2nd gear launch at 1,000rpm I ran a shockingly FAST 15.2 seconds!

Anyway, the day was getting hotter and was now at 21.5c and my hopes of cracking into the 13's going slim, we talked about getting the weight down, taking the spare seat out, lowering the pressure on front of the wheels, and even putting the rears up a few PSI. However with no tools to take bits out, and no pump to check/change PSI in the tyres, we came to realise the chances of doing what I wanted was very very unlikely. So I waited in line for another go, looking at the black astra turbo at the side of me thinking, this should be a good race, me running early to mid 14's and thinking these astra turbo coupe thingy's should run 15 seconds or so? So giving up on my dream of 13 second 1/4 times I waited at the lights for the astra to get set.. the lights go green and off I go,

Well, as soon as I set off it just seemed to grip and go.. as soon as I got off the strip, I had my hand over my phone waiting for my passenger to call me to tell me if it was as fast as I thought. The phone rang, I answered, my passenger asking me if I finally did a 2nd gear launch right, I said no. But then he asked me if I wanted to know the time, to which of course I Replied... YES!

DSC01974.jpg

13.8 FTW!!!!11one.

My job here was done, I was more than happy with that! However as my passenger used to own a very well known TDi Sport on here and left us for a 'sports' car I decided to let him have ago to show him what he was missing! We waited in line for bloody ages, so before he ran we both decided to let this be the last run for the TDi today, I had personally done what others, and even I thought couldnt be done. So I left the last run to him, which of course if he beat my time I would have taken that all back, and ran until I had again got my title back... So he ran :

I was happy to see my car fly down the track, next to what I can only assume was a 400bhp+ perfect white scooby! Was also very happy at the fact that EdButler didnt beat my time, yet IMHO did very well to say he hasnt been used to a TDi for awhile, nevermind mine far from standard!

The only injury of the day is a sheered (sp?!) off engine mount which vibrated the cabin on the way home.

More than happy with the day, times and people who we spoke to whilst then (Ben CTR etc!)

so whats the spec of the car? good times by the way

Its just a Seat Ibiza TDi running 226bhp :)

Strong work, that.

A little adjusting of the gear linkage and perhaps some new rubber cable inserts may help shave a tad more off that impressive time.

yeah but what mods? is it just the stage 2 turbo or have you done all the supporting mods? any water or nos being injected? any head work?

I like the idea of faster times.. how?! What would be adjusted and that? Little cheeky but I could do with a chat about the mods youve done to yours, do you have any form of IM?

Sorry, most people just want to know bhp ;)

Its the PD130 with a TD stage 2 turbo, with a custom exhaust, forge fmic, pd160 air intake and performance panel filter with a remap (obv lol!)

No water or nos (yet ;) ) or headwork, standard injectors, standard head, standard cam etc.

not bad then, get more mods on it :D

I think i forsee a few more mods for shifty now.. like a slippy diff

Good results tho

I need to give my slippy diff a good outing, but I think it will be in the Spring now - too late for this year. Going to be winter work-in-progress I think.

PS: Damn good time Mr T - So the fastest time was using 1st gear? I've noticed with my peloquin that I can't seem to abuse 2nd gear as much and I can get pretty grippy starts in 1st - not the usual VAG wheelspin at all.

Thats damn good figures without injectors or a cam  who mapped it?

Very good figures, a few on here will be envious :)

Haha, give me chance man! Im skint as it is, got the clutch, smf, diff and turbo done this year at great cost!

I cant say the slip diff would have helped 'that' much, however on the fastest run, it did just seem to grip and go, and Ed mentioned that the nearside wheel (as he was in the stands) seemed to lock up, go, lock up, go etc which might have been the diff doing its thinggg..

Yeah mate, as above think the diff did it job on the fastest run. Yeah 1st gear for almost the reason you say, it seems to be pretty grippy in 1st now down the Pod, and the fact I didnt wanna do lots of 2nd gear launches and fry my clutch! lol.

Ive been told the standard injectors throw in enough fuel for alot more power than im running, so cant see me changing them anytime soon. As far as the cam, well id love to change that, however devon has had problems with his, so I dont know where to go really!

I personally think its the PD160 air intake ;) lol.

Its mapped by RS Tuning in Leeds which I believe is a forum sponser on here aswell. I have to admit (and even let Paul the owner of RS Tuning see it) I was a little upset when it only mapped to 226bhp and 507Nm as I had hopes of like two others he had mapped earlier this year hitting over 240bhp, the bora hitting 248bhp from memory. However, once I was in the car and driving it on roads I knew, I could tell just how much quicker it was than before. One of the problems I think was as mentioned at the beginning of the thread, I had a map to 170bhp, however for a laugh I had been speaking to Paul and we both wanted to 'test' however much a standard PD130 turbo could take, so took it up to him before the TD2 and they mapped it to 202bhp! So the TD2 only saw a increase of 24bhp, however its faster. I have been very happy with the map since the day I picked up the car, revs all the way now but I generally change at 4,600rpm. Only issue now is RS Tuning want to get more power out of the beast, but believe the air intake temps are too high as the intercooler is covered up! So next mod is the Devilowns Methnol kit which hopefully should get rid of the Death Race 2000 style black smoke out the rear!

Very good figures, a few on here will be envious :)

Wasnt posted to show off as such, just hopefully comes across as to what a great day I had, and I feel the money spent on the damn thing each times something brakes and I uprate pays off on a day like that day, when people are like "look at that bloody diesel going down" thinking its gunna be slow, and its running the same times as a mate of mine in his modded RX7!

After seeing shifty's at york raceway i think we all knew one would run in they 13's looks like yours is the benchmark now congratulations its good to see it happen:thumbup:

Cheers boss, ive always had the luck of the irish when it came to 1/4 times. On SCN a few have ran stage 1 tdi's (170bhp-180bhp) down the strip, with only 4 *that I know of* hitting under 15 seconds.

Mike_OBD in his C-C Stage 2 hitting a 14.9, Sissons and EdButler both running C-C hitting 14.8's and mine which at the time was running C-C hitting 14.7.

Mine might not have the most power for a TDi on SCN or here, but id like to think the support mods (diff, solid bushes) etc have made it as fast as it is, and inturn as you say a benchmark for other TDi's to hit, and by all means beat! The more diesel's getting into the 13's the more the petrol boys need to be worried, what next into the 12's?! lol!

Video of the final run done by Ed running against what I can only assume is 400bhp+ worth of white scooby

That goes well!

car goes well, how do you come to the conclusion the scooby is running 400 bhp plus?

because it beat a PD130 with a stage 2 turbo so it must have been a fully race preped car :)

;)

:P

or hows about because it ran a near 12 second dead standing quarter:rolleyes: or does yours go quicker?
